Puma Roof cracking up.

Hi everyone,

I've got a bit of an issue with the roof on my 2011 Puma 110 where it is stuck down to the windscreen with sealant (sikaflex I assume).

A few months ago it went into my local dealer with a water leak issue in the passenger side foot well. They traced the leak to where the roof is stuck down to the screen right above the A pillar. The sealant had cracked, they sent it to an approved body shop for repair. Happy days!

Now the same cracking has reappeared but on the drivers side.

If I put my hand out the window whilst driving along and put my finger right on the join of the gutter and the A pillar I can feel the roof shifting up and down by probably 1mm.

My question is: Since the repair on the passenger side, I've installed a roof cage, foxwing (passenger side) and I have my rooftop tent up there in prep for a quick Cameron Corner trip next week.

Is the dealer likely to hassle me for having all the gear on the roof? Not LR approved racks blah blah etc.

I have a good relationship with my local dealer, they've been nothing but helpful since I bought the car.

Has anyone else had the same trouble with the roof/windscreen sealant?

Is it common - Yes - Very

You can dig the material out and inject sikaflex which will fix it.

Will LR complain about your accessories - They may or may not..

If you are exceeding roof loadings (75kg) or running a rigid rack (provides torsional loads) then they may reject your claim.

I just sikaflexed mine up when I had it.

Seems like a regular problem. I just did mine, I just used the blue label sika flex the orange label wont set it is just a sealant. I dug out all the old stuf and pumped it from inside and out .

Top of the 'A' post is not uncommon, especially on cars with roof-racks!

...there's a reason why the roof gutter is only rated to 75kg... ;)

As far as I am aware, all post 2007 Defenders have (according to the Owner's Handbooks) a roof load limit of 150 kg (including the roof rack), not 75 kg.

Same problem with mine - drivers side. Had it fixed by the dealer but it has opened up again. I am tempted to just seal it up myself but I'm thinking surely it can be secured better - I will try one more time at the dealer.

P.S. First appeared after driving rough tracks at Sundown NP.:)

This was a common Defender problem, I had the same issue on my 300Tdi years ago. Sealing it up was only a temporary cure, you have to remove the roof lining to get at the screws that hold the roof to the windscreen frame. One of mine was almost completely undone the others were loose. From memory they were a very large self-tapper that screwed into the frame, two each side.
Problem was caused by too heavy a load on the roofrack as already mentioned. My roofrack alone is close to the limit.

Not sure if the latest Defender is bolted together exactly the same way but if so you may have to remove the roof lining at some point to fix it.

I think I'll just take it to the dealer (sans the tent and basket) since they did a good job on the other side.

I have been told by Mulgo to be careful with the placement of the forward most rack. Best to keep it back from the very front due to outward pressure from the rack feet causing the self tappers to pull out of the screen frame.

I'll update after the trip to Cameron Corner.

75kg roof rating, no its more like 150......

Most racks are between 35 and 60 kg plus load, so that just rubbish...

The MOD signal Comms spec 110's take more than 75kg they are standard ie, no modifications to the roof 110s. with a heavy duty steel rack.

Just because the MOD does it, doesn't mean that you can/should do it too... ;)

They used to stick massive loads on the 110s for the Camel Trophy & G4. The guys driving the trucks never complained about leaks but the bodywork was trashed after! (The loads from the roofracks used to squash the rear tubs!!!)

It's your car, so if you want to have a roofrack, knock yourself out. Personally, I'd avoid using a roofrack but if I had to, I would limit the usage to carrying soft/light stuff.

As for 150kg vs 75kg... It depends on the revision of the manual. Which becomes academic if you're not fitting one anyway. ;)
