View Full Version : New Rock Sliders

My original side steps had expired. They always hung too low, were made of alloy and I was always going to change them at some point. That point came when I dinged the passenger one up quite nicely.

After some research on this forum, this is what I decided. They are supplied by Mulgo in Sydney (Daniel), and I had Rijidij Off Road (Murray) in VIC fit them up for me. Two people I know (and a lot of people on this forum included) have used and trust - I am one of them. The Rock Sliders are Mulgo's standard but modified with the tube part bent down and some checker plate added - first photo tells the story. I have a few pics on the defender as well. They are solid as so should be great protection. Nigel

It took 2 hours to fit Nigel's new sliders. They are very well made and solid.
They bolt up to the outriggers using existing holes and went on without any hassles. The only extra thing you have to do (on a Puma, not sure about other models) is drill out the rivnuts where the front mudflaps are bolted on. The mudflaps are held on with 6mm bolts in the rivnuts which wouldn't be strong enough for the sliders, the bolts for the sliders are 8mm , so you get rid of the rivnuts and use a washer and nyloc instead. The new bolts hold on the sliders as well as the mudflaps.
The anodised ally checkerplate looks good against the black paint. Another great product from Mulgo.

That looks real nice Nigel, good idea with the bent down bit which would actually assist getting in and out.
I've noticed the matt decals / stickers on the side... did you get the Defender like that or added yourself? (I want some!)
Cheers

The "matt decals" as you call them were a standard fitment item on the LR Defender 60th anniversary special edition "SVX" models. I'm not sure if or where you can get them, would be nice to find some though, I think they look great!

My wife is a little vertically challenged so this does help getting in and out. In addition, they do not hang down too far. The matt decals are standard on an SVX. There is a mob that sell something like that in Melbourne. A google search might be best.

Hi Nigel,
Very nice work mate, once again.
I did sneak a look at them at the LR Expo.
I actually ordered a set from Mulgo while I was there. Just the standard version but they suit me better.
Cheers

Are these similar to the terrafirma ones?

Hey Juddy,
They look pretty much the same, but I think Mulgo's have them made locally to order, hence Nigel's custom jobby's.

Ah I see, I was researching the terrafirma ones, and thought they looked alike.
The terrafirma ones are $ 500 rrp I think the mulga ones are 700 ish.
It would be interesting to know what the difference is between the two types.
I have not seen either so can't comment on the quality etc.

I haven't seen the tf ones but I have given the Mulgo ones a couple of tests and they have stood up well to both rock and tree.

Haven't seen the TF versions up close but they sell for $687.50 (TF810) for the sliders with the pipe step, Mulgo's are very heavy duty and nicely made, sell $675.

That's good positive feed back. I take it the price difference was not a issue.

Mounting of Mulgo sliders is significantly different to the Terrafirma ones. Different brackets and only standard mounting holes, we also don't use that bulkhead bolt to fit our sliders.
Our sliders are manufactured locally to our specifications. Finish is zinc plated with satin black powder coating.
As far as we know our sliders are the only ones on the market with zinc plating as a rust prevention.
Re pricing, products made in Australia can rarely compete with UK made, often UK is cheaper. We strife to supply better products and better customer service at a fair and reasonable price.

Terrafirma also clearly states that theirs are not suitable to use for jacking up the vehicle... (regardless of the fact that you wouldn't normally) but if it it can't support the weight how can it offer any protection?
The Mulgo ones actually do offer protection and I'm super happy with my set!

A lot of the imported products from the UK are great products and well made, but, in my opinion, some of them are just not made quite strong enough to cope with Australian conditions. Australian made products are made with harsh conditions in mind.

I have to agree with you there Murray, the Exmoor Trim stuff is not suited to our conditions.... I could go on.....

I also heard TF is manufactured in China. I could be wrong but I personally try and support locals if they have the product I want.
