G'day
I know ATF is an old topic but I'm curious if anyone uses anything other than Lifeguard6 and if so how has your auto box run so far?
Cheers

There have been some failures with oyher brands, it is a shell spec ATF and must meet the specs set by ZF. Cheapest in Oz is the get the Lifeguard 6 in bulk direct from ZF.

G'day
I got a price of $580 with delivery from ZF in Sydney for 20lt. I've read bad reports about penrite and mixed reports about stuff like duradrive. I find it hard to believe that after 7 years nobody has made a equivalent product for such a popular box
Cheers

Funnily enough this topic came up yesterday with my son. He has a FPV Typhoon with 308Kw!!! at the rear wheels and on my advice changed the trans fluid.
The mechanic used ZF, and said that he had been told that Castrol are working on it but haven't been able to meet the spec yet.
He also fitted a steel sump from a BMW X5.
Regards Philip A
PS it is FAST.

Yet another case of price gouging in Australia... AU$20.60 per litre in UK, versus what? $43/L from Ford or $bend_over/L from LR!:mad::mad:

Fuchs Titan 4400 is a full synthetic ATF that has been used successfully on the 6HP26. I will be using it on my next flush.

Fuchs does not list this ATF as the same as lifeguard. It is DEXRON III and does not meet the spec. Be very carefull about what you put in the transmission.
It must meet Shell ATF M1375.4 It has to do with conductivity and the matalurgy of the transmission components.
Do not believe what you are told when you are told an ATF is suitable.
DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic46311.html?highlight=%2B%5C%22atf%5C%22+%2B%5 C%22shell%5C%22)
A few have been told that an ATF is suitable to only find out it wasn't. If it doen't meet the correct spec then you are taking a risk.

Cheers, I didn't think it would be on the 11 sheet as 11A and 11B fluids aren't suitable.

Rick yes, that lists Lifeguard Fluid 5 and 6, among others. It seems TE-ML 11 is a list of lubricants rather a specification.

I have being using it for the last 20 000km with Dr Tranny instant shudder fix, box as smooth as new. Did the Shell 1375.4 , dbl flush , did nothing to eliminate shudder , told by ZF I require a new torque converter and agents.Got rid of the Shell oil and added Fuchs and al is well.
O yes , I only tow with mine.
Discovered the guys in Germany uses the Fuchs oil , and the Ford F150 guys have great success with Fuchs and Dr Tranny all on the same box.
The Shell oil story , sorry but its a farce by Land Rover and Jaguar , they obviously get a kick back from Shell.
Dammit it's a normal gearbox used by a lot of makes of cars all around the world, the ZF 6HP26 is not as special as we are made to believe by other forumites , it's a run of the mill box supplied to various cars not just Land Rover and Jaguar
An authorised L/Rover gearbox specialist here in South Africa ONLY uses Fuchs, they do all L/Rover box and diffs repairs for agents.
The BMW guys in Germany uses Fuchs 4134 and the 4400 , look at their forums in the same box, even Lique Moli have a better ATF than the elusive, hard to find , (kickbacks off course)Shell 1375.4.

Until Fuchs add that it meets/exceeds either the appropriate ZF or Land Rover ATF specifications, or my D4 is out of warranty... I'll stick with the ZF fluid. There are just too many "get out of jail free" cards available to ATF makers, ZF and LR.

I have specifically asked ZF what the TE-ML spec oils mean, well here is the answer.
TE-ML is the name of the ZF lists of lubricants. It is coming from a further name of the ZF department which has published these lists. The no. are for the different transmission types and ZF divisions.
TE-ML 04 for example is for ZF marine transmissions / Zf division industrial technology.
TE-ML 11 is for passenger car manual, double clutch and automatic transmissions / ZF division powertrain technology
and so on.

My point is, we are making the gearbox of a Land Rover can only take the SHELL 1375.4 oil, it is not !!! plenty other oil are available and EVEN better like FUCHS 4134
Plenty other makes of ATF have the TE-ML 11 spec .

Ean, I was quoted $98.90 for 4 litres of 4134 from Rhys (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/verandah/154809-land-rover-range-rover-automatic-transmission-service-kits-fluids.html) however that was some time ago and the price may have changed.
