hi a mate recently had a g/box replaced in his defender 110 td5 and it was starting perfectly before fifth gear let go, since having new box fitted has been hard to start?!?! APPARENTLY the cfa has been having the same problem with their defenders taking ages to start (in the western district)??
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

thanks

wato.

The Crank Position Sensor would have been disturbed with the clutch removal so this could be a good place to start.
Might be wrong though

Is it still cranking as quickly. If not, then possibly the earth lead from chassis to trans isn't quite right (or not fitted at all).

I'm with SteveG - Another vote for earth strap. You may find that all your earth is going through the handbrake cable..

Yeah same here earth strap.

Easy to get one and put straight from the battery to the gearbox as they are next to each other.

I had the same problem on a 300 tdi

I would have to agree that this is a likely cause and would recomend sort ASAP as the handbrake cables earthing ability is poor and it has a tendency to get to the "on fire" side of hot!

Its a quick one to test too. Get a decent jumper lead and connect directly from the battery -ve to the engine or transmission.
If that fixes the problem its definitely an earth issue.
Has to be a good jumper lead though with a decent amount of copper in it - using a cheapie wont prove anything.

It will smoke heaps before it does catch fire, but is tricky to track down. In other news i have a nice new handbrake cable ;)
