I got an Unreg Vehicle 28 day permit to test drive & do the RWC etc.

My 1st drive of a Series and the 1st ride since the 2A ambulance taking me to the RAP fell over! I had had an "accident" lighting a range-fuel powered HWS. It backfired & caused my hairline to instantly recede & took off both my eyebrows.

But I digress!

1st impression: were ear muffs an optional extra?

There's a high frequency cricket chirping noise in top gear hi-ratio. Familiar to anyone?

I also get a "clank-clank-clank" as I cruise to a halt clutch in. This sounds like a uni inside the front diff but I did check each one carefully?

MAN! Is 1st gear straight cut?? I haven't heard that howl since my last early Jag!

Apart from these, it drove & stopped well (good ole VH44!) but it sure made my split screen Kombis seem like winged gazelles!

OK the chirping noise MAY to be squeaking from the GB cover plates. It's not there cold, only after it warms up. I will go around tightening stuff & spraying silcone lubricantn along the joins. Only in top gear tho. The "direct drive" throws up a different vibration cf the indirect gears???

The clanking? I CAN"T be the uni's as I get about 3 "clanks" per wheel revoultion instead of one. I will jack her up, select low ratio & just let it idle in gear and listen.

I know nothing of the Series LRs but if it was a later car, my money would be on a sticking/tight handbrake.

No, but it might have been an idea - however, I noted how quiet mine was after a partial strip to paint and reassemble with all body panels tight and all new rubber plugs etc.

No

This suggests either it is stuck in four wheel drive, the handbrake is dragging, or both. May also indicate that some of the U-joints or splines are a bit worn. Also check that the U-joint flange bolts are not loose, both front and rear shafts.

MAN! Is 1st gear straight cut??

yes. so is reverse. Excessive noise may suggest worn components, but if you are not used to straight cut gears, it may not have anything wrong. As long as ithe noise is uniform, don't worry.

Performance should be comparable to the kombis, may improve with the handbrake not dragging.

Clanking noise gone. I thought the handbrake was quite free but I gave it a few more clicks away & that did it. Thnx to all. It would have been the last place I looked.

Chirping still there but it sure sounds like a body or mount squeak. I will try to duplicate it on stands.

I get a chirping noise from the truck cab rear rubbing on the gal capping, the big nuts and bolts slowly loosen over time and need nipping up.
