OK lads and ladettes, I am getting a bit miffed...

As some of you know, I sell EAS Valve Block O-ring Repair Kits and up until recently included a replacement diaphragm free of charge. I have a high degree of confidence in the o-rings but I don't trust the new style diaphragms I am testing.

I used to get the "orange" diaphragms in my how-to at EAS Valve Block Rebuild Guide « PaulP38A.com (http://paulp38a.com/99p38a/eas-valve-block-renew/) from Rover Renovations until Dennis closed it down. I can get the suitable rubber gasket material but I am stuffed if I can find a hollow punch to make the replacement diaphragm at the right diameter.

The diaphragm recess in the EAS Valve Block is 19.3mm diameter and 3-3.5mm deep. I have tried a 3/4" leather hollow punch but it creates a disc less than 19mm and has angled edges.

I need a hollow punch that creates discs at 19-19.3mm diameter with 3-3.5mm thickness and square edges.

If you can help I will happily supply you o-rings and diaphragms for the life of Hard Range and your P38, and/or buy the right sized punch from you.

Cheers, Paul.

why not make the punch?

If you can get photos up of the diaphragm you used to get vs what a punch it may be possible to just machine out a tool for the job.

I'm trying to remember who in Europe sent me a sample diaphragm that they were making. I've got it here somewhere

Yes, you're right, Allen. It was Goswin.

I trialled it but felt it didn't work as well as the OEM diaphragm.

yeah, I tried that one a couple of years ago. Was ok, but the price was a bit steep to buy them for inclusion in the o-ring kit.

A simple rubber gasket material works fine as long as it is the right diameter and thickness.

My preference is to keep giving them away with the o-ring kit. Unfortunately, I don't have the means to fabricate my own hollow punch. If someone here does, I'd rather give the business to an AULRO member than go out to market.

Viton® Rod & Cord - BUY VITON ROD CORD Order Online (http://www.professionalplastics.com/Viton_RodCord)

Get Viton rod, mount a short length on a lathe and cut to the correct thickness with a thin parting tool.

hi Paul
i can adapt a punch for you but it would not be supper hard so only good for hand opperation. i was in the process of getting the stuff together to make diaphrams but the sheet they supplied was thinner by 0.2mm than their spec. now i have to make backing shims. give me a call.

iv youve got a selection of the material you want to cut I think I might be able to come up with something...

you are only looking at hand working right?

Rupert and Dave - yep, hand punch is fine by me. I figure if I can make 20-50 diaphragms at a time on a lazy Sunday arvo once every month or two, that will suit me. I don't want to spend a fortune or over-engineer this. I just want something that does the job and I can include at no additional cost with the EAS O-ring kit.

Cheers
Paul.

Sorted - went to Bunnings and bought a conical grinding stone that attaches to a drill. Locked the 3/4" hollow punch into the vice and opened the hole out a bit.
The gaskets are now a perfect fit in the diaphragm recess. If and when this hand-hollow punch wears out, I can just do it again.

Now to test them on my P38's for a while before including them in the VB o-ring kit.

Probably too late, but my wife sells stamping and scrapbooking equipment. I just looked up on the wall at the 1000 or so punches she has, and there is a 3/4 inch circle (19mm) punch.

If you want to try one of these out as well, it can be easily arranged.

No worries. PM me your address and I shall have one ordered and delivered.

Let it be my donation to the ongoing research and advancement of DIY EAS.
