Hi Guys,
Got hold of a set of Hella driving lights over the weekend. :D
What is the best mounting method if you don't have a bull-bar?:(

search on Disco3 ofr DuallyD2, there was a thread covering what I thought was a rather smart & unbobtrusive solution using standrd mounting points.

Looks neat but I think you'd get a lot of vibration with a heavy light like a Hella. Attaching stays to the tops of the lights may help if you can find a way to attach them.
Somewhere on the Disco3 site is another thread showing some 4000FFs mounted using the LR mounts through the bumper and a bit of angle. These looked quite solid but meant the lights were a fair way forward.
Link to gallery here: DISCO3.CO.UK Photo Gallery - D4 Hella HID Aux Lamps (http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=21807)
The Journey of Discovery Discos had Hella Predators mounted on the bumper, but I can't tell how they did it.
Cheers,

You may want something like these, designed specifically for driving lights for vehicles without mounting points
X Bar - Universal Light Mounting System (http://www.bushranger.com.au/x_bar.php)

I mounted the switch on the left hand side of the steering wheel column it is a crap spot to get to but as they will be wired into the high beams (have to by law) all you have to do is leave them on and they will automatically come on with the high beams activated. The other spot is to put it into the light switch console but you will need a small switch.

Thanks Julian. I had a quick look here at work, and found a nice small round switch that should fit on the right side of the steering wheel, in the same area as the main light switch....
I will post some pictures when i get it all done. :D

So the lights are on!!!!
Pretty happy with them, even though they are only basic 100W units.
I took my time with the installation so it was as tidy as possible. I had to trim the mounting bar to it didn't set the front parking sensors off all the time.

Hey Ben, looks good - can you post a pic of your switch and do you find the lower position of the lights impacts their throw?

Hi Sean,
I am in China for a week or so, i will post the switch mounting when i get home..... i put the switch on the left hand side of the steering column, probably not the best position, but it is quite neat and out of the way.
I haven't had a lot of testing time with them at night, but so far the lower position does not seem to be a problem with the projection of the light, but time will tell.

Apart from the obvious ego boosting attraction of having driving lights out front is it generally accepted that they are needed or there is a real benefit?
I find the D3's bi-xenon thingymajig headlights on high beam to be incredible. On a recent trip north through a new section of sweeping road there were brand new large road signs. The reflection off them from the headlights was almost painful.
The light is so crispy white and penetrates so far I can't imagine what benefit old style 100 watters would be.
Lighting is one part life that has changed incredibly in recent years. I used to have 2 x 60W floods running off 24V on a boat. Having them on for an hour or two was a big concern for battery drain. Changed to 2 x Hella fully sealed LED floods (60W equivalent) and you can barely see them register on the ammeter and the light is beautiful white and penetrating. When you see the old floods now they look all yellowy & dull like the battery is flat.
So bolting on spots and feeding high amp wiring etc. seems to be like a backward step?

Have a look at these threads. They cover off a lot of what you are asking:

G'day PerthDisco, I like you also thought twice about driving lights as the OEM ones are so good but checkout my thread which I have added photos of the variation between all of the lights (standard, high beam and high beam and driving lights) I notice the difference particularly in the width and also in the clarity of light in front. I also find that going down dark streets/tracks where there is no additional light that it makes a massive difference, i also find that the lightforce 240's are substantially better than the narvas i had. Hope this helps.
Cheers

Has anyone used the Land Rover Driving Lamp Mounting Brackets that LR uses for their own lights? I wonder if they fit aftermarket light, in which case it would be ideal.
Not compatible with winch though, although I don't intend to get one.

Thanks to all. Definite improvement can be seen but the OEMs are darn good compared to the stock headlights of yesteryear.
I wonder if a bullbar slightly reduces the effectiveness of the headlight?
I am interested also in the reduction in cooling air with bars, spots etc. out front.

PHL - yes - good thread re this on disco4.co.uk; I will try and find it; note the LR white Millenium Discos (see global website) swapped the pathetic LR lights for Hella HID and used the standard mounts but added a bracket to make them fit.
