Afternoon all,
I have just finished experimenting with my D4 & installed the mood lighting loom into the vehicle.
This illuminates the release handle (green LED) the large pull handle (white LED) & the lower door pocket (white LED).
With the park lights turned on...Taadaa it works! The dimmer switch adjusts the brightness.
The plug is in the loom with a blank on the end. The easiest way to fit is start at the bottom & work upwards as there is also a path to follow for the loom to sit it.
Took 10mins to fit per door card.
Price is approx $55.00 per loom.
Cheers

Awesome! Any photos? I had read about this a while ago and was considering doing this. Does it require 1 loom per door? Also did you source the loom locally, or from abroad? Thanks!

Do the door trims have to come off,i am guessing yes.
Part number of loom would be good.
Thanks in advance:)

Paul,
Yes door trims need to be removed, you may be able to do it while hanging connected, but it is easier with it on a table.

Yes, 1 loom per door & there is a front & rear.
The fronts are the same part number & the same for the rear.
I purchased parts through work. ( MLR )
I can help if required wrt to pricing, I quoted retail price.
Let me know if required.

Simply because, it didn't happen, without..............
Can I add it to the build when I order the car, Pete?

Hi Basil,
If you order an HSE it is std, otherwise not an option.
But like me you can fit at a later date. :-)
Pics to come....

Was there any of that mood lighting available for the D3/LR3?

I have heard of small lights located within the overhead reading light assembly that shine down on the centre console area but I have never actually seen them.

They all have the one over the gear lever. Wave your hand below the front interior light cluster at night.

I took your suggestion - waved my hand up close and there was the light illuminating the back of my hand. It helped that I turned up the dimmer switch and yes, now that I pay attention, it does put a bit of a glow on the top of the shift lever and the yellow downhill button.

I must say that I had never really noticed it before. I guess I do not drive much in the dark in the summer; does not get dark here until about 23:00h in the summer. In the winter, as in today, it was dark at 16:30 h but the street lights and the snow tend to brighten things up to the point that you can read a newspaper outside as long as you wear your gloves. Out in the country, same thing if it is a clear sky and a near full moon.

Today this afternoon, for the first, and I hope the last time, I drove the 3 what I would call IFR, like one might fly a plane.

A blinding snow squall hit while I was on a local freeway; it was like driving inside a snowball. When that happens I try to get off at the first available exit. In this case, I could see one on the NAV but not thru the windscreen; hence when the next exit ramp showed on the NAV, I edged over per the NAV display and followed the track. To my relief, no lumps, bumps or ditches presented themselves - the technique works OK on my Beech but this is the first time I have tried it in the Land Rover. I however do not recommend it.

The jpg below I took on the weekend when I was out shovelling snow from around the plane near high noon. The dull grey is typical and the if you could see the sun, it would be low in the south - in this case, sitting just above the roof of my 3. When it is dull like this and a snow squall hits, there is no up or down - I think your dust storms create the same conditions.

Note my 10 spoke 18" rims I am so proud of with the narrower 235 65 R18 XL Pirelli Ice and Snow tyres mounted. To me, the narrower the tyre is, the better in snow.

Yes Mood Lighting is cool.
One of the reasons I went for the HSE. Well actually it was the final reason; went through all of the other HSE extras and ticked off what I needed and didn't need. Mood Lighting fell into the category "Hey that's cool, gotta have that"
Something just doesn't seem right when I am in a D4 without it at night!

How to fit.
Tools required-Screw driver (NB: longer blade that one in pic, forgot the ones in the door handle are deeper), Boning Tool or Soft plastic wedge to prise in between chrome trims & also not in photo a trim removal tool for levering door handle cable away.

Remove both Chrome trim surrounds on handle, place boning tool into bottom of chrome & gently prise outwards & slightly upwards, when you can see the trim starting to come away from the handle, place tool in between handle & trim & prise upwards-photo later shows how it is held.
There are 8 screws to remove, 4 in the handles we just removed, 1 in the door release pull, 2 at the lower pocket & 1 in the side-see photo.
the tweeter is help on by 1 snap socket, be careful not to break it.
To remove door trim, hold handle & grab outer corner near top (This is passenger front door trim-so top left & the top of the door trim will fit nicely into your hand) & gently but firmly pull away, this will unclip 3 or 4 clips & then just pop the rest of them gently. **Be Gentle** if you are too harsh & the door trim gets damaged!!, note these things are in excess of $1000 to replace the whole door card!
The door handle cable is a little tricky, you need to lever this up & away from the trim **Be Patient** as you can crack the plastic (white section) snap in section, which then means a whole new door cable. If you have some silicon spray by all means use it. Photo 5 is what we are looking at.
Unplug all the connections, 2 on the door ECU, 1 on the window switch control(blue), 1 on the door lock control(green), the tweeter(wrapped in foam), the supply for the loom your about to fit(as it goes to a dummy plug)(grey) the lower puddle light at the bottom of the door.
See next photo for coloring of plugs & continuation.

Once you have undone all the plugs & cable, place door trim on table with cloth as not to scratch leather.
As you can see there is a little path that the cable runs in, i used the screw driver to slightly push down the cable wrapped in foam down so it stays there .
You can also see where the dummy plug sat & where the new plug clicks into. Then a matter of clipping in the other 2 plugs(the plug that goes to the top door pull has a connector that has a tab that sits perpendicular to it, the others are all flat), clean wiring up as to make sure it doesnt get in the way & time to refit.
Now just plug everything back together, line up all the clips in the door trim & push it all home. Give the whole door trim a good closed fist tap to make sure it sit flush. line up the tweeter clip & push home.
Screw in all the 8 screws & fit the Chrome trims, as you can see in the photo thats how they come out & you can clearly see what they line up with.
Turn parkers on, have a chuckle & job well done.[thumbsupbig]

:D:D:D:D:D:D
Done & dusted
Followed Pete's instructions, which made it easy.
Couple of points to note:
A magnetic tip screwdriver makes the 4 screws in the door handle much easier to deal with. ;)
The hardest connection is the one for the puddle light. It is small, and right down where you can just reach it while holding onto the door trim.
Make sure you can open your doors all the way. Makes the whole job so much easier. And if you can do it in bright daylight, so much the better.
Put the window down on the door you are working on. Gives you a bit more room to get your head in, when you want to look down & see what is going on.
The LED's for the mood lighting each have their own position to go in. Even thou the cable will reach, enabling you to put them in the wrong spot, they wont shine thru the holes properly, which leads you to wonder why you bothered. The led with the single, larger tab goes in the highest mounting
The door trim is much easier to remove the second time around, when you know what you are doing. See previous note.
I found the easiest thing to do, was to put the connecting socket into position (remove the fake grey one, and put it there), then lay the wires in the path.
The help of a 12 month old pup is not needed, nor recommended.
A set of trim removal tools makes life so much easier. If you don't have any, $25 from Jaycar for a 3 piece set.
All up, it took me a little over an hour, for all 4 doors. This would have been a bit less if I had put the car on the driveway, and had easier access to the doors. It would also mean that my 4 legged "helper" wouldn't be able to steal things like the screwdriver, nor bring me his ball to play with.
And yes, I did have a giggle at the end. Just waiting for it to get dark.

Did this one myself the other week - yes, giggles too.
The point about the door cable is valid though - tricky to get out, and very fragile... So, i'm off to get a new door lock cable :-(

Just like this - lights up the pull lever, handle and door pocket. You can see exactly what is in your doors, and people unfamiliar with the car can find handles in the dark etc.
But mostly, it just looks cool :-)
