Hi all been in the market for a td5 defender for a while now and trying to wait patiently but there really is a lack on the market at the moment. I may have found one, a touch overpriced but it's totally bog standard 2001 model. No abs no traction control, I really thought I wanted traction control, am I right? I'm willing to compromise but is this to important, Or is it a bonus not having another thing like the module to go or sensors. Looking forward to replys...

nahh, it just means you'll learn how to drive rather than just sitting behind the wheel and aiming.

Traction control is handy but you could always fit a detroit to the rear, or arb locker as you have the salisbury axle in the 01 110 with either some hy-tuff or ashcroft axles.
The MAJOR advantage is the ABS which has saved my posterior twice when people pulled out without looking in suburbia.

Agree with Frantic. The ABS is the more important part of the ETC/ABS system. Well worth having IMHO.

Thanks for the replys, yeh to my understanding its well worth it. I didn't actually realize they came without the package. It was a bit of a deal breaker, and just wanted to make sure it was as I'd love to have bought one before the crissy break, but still don't want to rush it

Trade Off

Pre 2002 = Salisbury :)
After 2002= P38 Rear diff :( with Traction control :)

The holy grail is one of the 2002 crossover models with a Salisbury AND Traction control ;)

2002 & Later also have the a flashable ECU and better head design with steel dowels tho most of the early ones should have been fixed by now (you would hope)

I bought an 05 110, I like the ABS and TC, Since buying it,it has had a TC Sals diff installed out of a 02 extreme. Couldn't be happier with it now.

You can also fit cruise control for virtually free on a post 2002 :)

Earliest traction control defenders are coming up to 10 years old now. I wonder what the life of those systems are? I've read that it's critical to have the system flushed properly regularly to prevent the valve bodies clogging up. Given they are priced in the 1000's to repair I reckon that's an important aspect to consider with a older defender (And I have one!.)

Personally - ABS is much more of an asset that Traction Control - with Mud tyres on I've yet to really need Traction control (I'm probably a bit tame.) But I have used ABS in a few situations and have found it has saved me a couple of times. I'm out of the practice of cadence braking and no way is that anywhere as good as ABS.

So in summary - Traction control is not worth the potential costs - but I reckon ABS is worth it.

Never mind girlie with phone in her ear round town; ABS saved my front end from damage more than once on ball bearing bush tracks, (at low speed)

So it seems definitely go the extreme. Glad that settled that little drama. But then I guess for the right price I could possibly compromise...buying cars can be a pain!
