View Full Version : LLAMS problems ?

Has anyone experienced problems after installing the LLAMS system? I am thinking of getting one on my 2005 D3, but a Land Rover mechanic told me he has seen heaps of problems with compressors, airbags, tyre wear and CV joints whenever people change the suspension settings of these vehicles by changing rods. He has never heard of LLAMS, but he advises against it.

I'm still keen, but I wanted to gauge public opinion before deciding either way.

No problems!
But if you go down, up, down, up, down....the same thing using the factory switch, will cause the compressor to over heat.
Someone ill informed, without first hand experience, who heard it from a mates, ex wife's, boss's cleaner....told him this would happen. LR tech or not. If you are silly, then you will have problems. Going to hard with too much height.....not a good idea.
Plenty of people love their LLAMs and GOE rods....I am one.
With LLAMS and rods You only use it when you need to. With LLAMS i use -20 around town, and only lift when needed. You don't travel heaps of ks on +50. I think travelling at +30 would be no issue if you needed to. So many more advantages having these mods.
Plus two passionate land rover vendors Gordon (GOE) and Graeme (LLAMS) provide fantastic support.

If used correctly, there is no appreciable increase in wear on any of the components.
Cheers,

One of the best mods done to my D4 so far, and in my opinion so long as you only use when needed (-20 for extra low carparks with Access mode selected), +30 for general fast flowing dirt roads (better clearance and more room before bumpstops) and +50 when on the beach needing maximum clearance you will have no issues.
I don't use mine for road use at all as it will effect the factory geometry and may increase tyre wear over a prelonged period......IMHO
Oh and BTW best of all, when on Stockton now my mates have given up doing 51kmph just to make my Disco lower :(

No worries here love it NO signes of any abnormal wear and as Discotwinturbo said about hearing it from his mates daughters wifes son or what ever is right dont listen to numb nuts like that:)
It will be in the top five best mods you will do!!!!!

LLAMS:
I'd go as far as saying the "First Mod" you should fit. :D
I was one of the first lucky ones to fit had it on for a couple of years now, no problem what so ever with other components.

Haven't been running my Llams for long enough to comment on wear, but as others have said if you only use it when you need it I can't imagine it actually causing any significantly increased wear. But it is an awesome mod, it makes an enormous difference if you are doing any significant off road driving. Also essential if you want to get into carparks with roof racks on:)

Got Llams in the first batch I think in 2010 - brilliant and fault free.

I've had llams for about a year and 20000 km later haven't had a problem. It's raised full time for clearance for the tyres, and did the trip to the cape towing a heavy camper and haven't had any abnormal wear. I got a wheel alignment right after I installed it and its been all good!

Hi Rich,

Looking at a host of mods to D4. Who installed your mods?

Thanks

Actually my most proud I did it Mod was the Custom drawer unit:

LLAMS instructions available here:

D3 switch instalation - https://www.box.com/shared/y90mhxmire
( Wish I had a $ for every preview & download of any of the LLAMS files / that would be $4220 :o )

Thanks heaps guys. You've sold me. My intent is to run at -20mm on roads (after a wheel alignment) and +30 off road if required (Oh and to give my mate with a 4in lifted Patrol a hard time) :)

Mate, I had my wheel aligned checked at -20, after being aligned at standard. He said the difference was so negligible and told me not to worry. I cant recall the exact figures but on the display it was pretty tiny. the wheel alignment was out more before they adjusted it, then the difference. Maybe check and see what your guy says.
When we tow, we put in on normal, as the trailer is bloody heavy and the tow ball weight makes it wallow a little more riding at -20.
Rods and LLAMS are easy to fit....rods you can do with your eyes closed once you know how, and LLAMS....about two hours all up.

Great to hear all the positive feedback on the Llams/rods, my rods arrived from GOE today :) thanks Gordon! Can't wait 'til the weekend to fit them.
Did anyone else read in 4wd action (I think) the guy with the D3 who said he's shortened his stock rods for a permanent 2" lift? Can't think that's too smart......

Rohan,
I have the GOE rods and they are great, easy to fit and pretty simply to adjust once you know how.
Only problem I have had was I got carried away adjusting the height on a recent trip in the Vic High country and on a remote part of the Coberras track I had a suspension fault and the car lowered. Had my heart rate up for 5 mins but after the compressor cooled it was all good and have had no other issues. Not so trigger happy now!!!.
I set it back to normal height as soon as I am back on the black top and putting air in the tires.

George

LLAMS All the way however I have to say I initially had some suspension faults popping up but that had to do with the installation by Davis performance and since they fixed it I had no other issues.
I really take my D3 off-road and LLAMS was the best purchase

I have never had an issue with LLAMs but when I first fitted the new toy I played a lot with it which highlighted how marginal the air system is - both in reservoir capacity and compressor power.
As a result I quickly learned that lowering to access height when getting in and out is doing the desiccant no favours, when you get offroad select the equivalent of offroad height and leave it there, only going higher if needed and going from the equivalent of access to super extended in one go is a no no and you are better off going to a mid point and leaving it there for a little while before going higher.
In my view the compressor is probably strong enough to last forever, however when the desiccant starts to clog up it makes the compressor work hard, over heat and fail. I am thinking about adding a service item every third service to either rejuvenate or replace the desiccant.

what is the largest tyre size with having both LLAMS & GOE rods?
reading through this thread it looks like some people do their highway driving at a setting lower than standard, (-20 etc) wont those large tyres rub?
thanks.

I had same issue with perhaps 'fiddling too much' (!) with LLAMS when in the Flinders and also experienced the access height drop / faults etc but after a 10 minute cooling period it was fine again; so I too tend to leave the height at off road and only go to extended if really necessary.

If you need the extra height do it. Like mine as deep river crossings made just that bit easier and the extra clearance when really needed is the main reason I put LLAMS on. the older compressors go on the blink with or without LLAMS. Be hard push to attribute any damage to LLAMS on my D3.
If you use yours off road in the really fun parts not just dirt roads it is a must have mod.
