What happens if a vehicle is towed in the wrong way

Quick question on towing an Automatic D2.

When dads D2 was towed, the RAA bloke just put the vehicle in neutral (the main transmission)

But i not in the hand book, that it says to put the Auto trans in Park and the transfer box in neutral. Since this was not done.... what damage could occur with the vehicle being towed about 20Kms.

im not sure, all dad says is that he was towed 20kms, using a short tow rope.

Any auto needs to be towed wheels off road, that is on a trailer, or as stated in handbook otherwise the auto will be damaged.

If the transfer box was also in neutral, you'll probably be ok. The small amount that the output shaft of the auto box could move like that would probably take a while to over heat. Putting it in park is best. Now if the auto box was in neutral and the transfer box was in high or low, the auto box could certainly over heat, due to the output shaft being driven by the transfer box without the transmission pump running to lubricate and cool things down.

I've seen some other makes and models of cars that could be towed short distances like with the auto in neutral, but they would require you to stop every few miles, start the engine, and run through the gears to get fluid everywhere.

Who cares about cooling the auto becuse the pumps not running?

I'd be a hell of a lot more concerned about lubing the bearings.

For most landies its Tcase in neutral auto in park, manual in neutral.

That's the problem. The tow was on highway 1 between snow town and locheil at 80km's/h.

Shouldn't the raa guy have known what to do, since that's his job.

Yes. Or at least he should have been safe and put in on a trailer or roll back. Around here most of the tow drivers are afraid of causing damage, so if it's 4x4 or awd they won't attempt to tow it unless all the wheels are off the ground.

Are you actually 100% certain he hadn't put the transfer box into neutral? If he's experienced and knew what he was doing perhaps he just poped it into neutral at some point and you weren't looking or didn't realise?

I'm sorry but most RAA guys wouldn't know.

My wife ran out of fuel and the guy didn't know how to prime it.. Was just going to keep cranking!!!

Not sure what vehicle your referring to about priming it, but assuming perhaps a TD5 with it's vehicle specific procedure, putting the transferbox into neutral is a bit more standard across numerous brands and models though...

Since I wasnt with dad at the time, I am not 100% certain, but I tend to believe what my dad tells me (call it old fashioned if you must).

Dad even asked the RAA guy what he needed to be in, and the RAA guy said just the auto trans in neutral.... nothing said about the transfer box..... Dad has only had the vehicle for 13 days.... this being his first Automatic 4WD.

This is now a mute point as the engine is stuffed, which is another story all together.
