View Full Version : Blowing the fuse when I select reverse??

Noticed my revesing light wasn't working tonight, so I had a look and it was a blown fuse. Replaced all good brake lights again, then I selected reverse (runs off same fuse) and it blew it.
I hadn't replaced the fuse box cover so I saw it happen. Tried it again and same thing. I only have so many fuses and I need to reverse out my driveway!
Clues or solutions - this is on the TDi 300

Did you stick your head underneath and have a look to see if anything is out of place......?
Sounds like you may have a short in the reverse light wiring......
Have you damaged a trailer plug or a reverse light recently......?
If you have a trailer plug.....check and make sure no clown has mucked around with it......
On the old style round plugs.....it was always fun to stick a 5cent coin in the plug under the flap.....which would blow all the light fuses as each light was used.....

Ta, I'll go and have a look now and it wasn't me who broke anything :p
No, it all seems good (how did you know I had a round trailer plug?)

This happened a few months back on mine, the fuse holder itself was burnt out in the fusebox. I connected the wires from the original fuse position to an aftermarket, separate fuse holder with the same rating fuse, think it was 7.5A. No further issues so I put it down to a loose fuse holder.

;) ,i'd be looking at the reverse switch on the gear box . If you have a light tester, disconnect power into switch ,and test, asuming you'v put a good fuse back ,test to that point , if ok work back from there , if not the problem is in front of the switch . You can bypass the switch to see if the reverse lights work . You should be able to move your truck . A blown reverse fues shouldn't stop you good luck jimr1 ...

Thanks, I'm not really fussed about the reverse light, it's my brakes lights that are concerning me.
This morning I just removed the fuse to reverse out, then put it back in, so I just need to remember to remove it before I reverse until I get some more time to sort it.

Had this issue a while back, chased it all over my tdi, used to happen regularly in rain, replaced switches, lights, re wired- ended up fixing by pulling wire harness out of chassis rail a bit where it enters at front (check where harness exits at rear to, can rub ontow bar) ,not blown a fuse for 2 years now:)

If we are discussing tdi300 defender, it should be fuse #17 which is 15A
The fuse holders do become sloppy but this would only break the circuit causing the lights to not work, but shouldnt blow the fuse. You need a short circuit or overloading to blow the fuse
I had the same problem and it was a worn wire shorting against the chassis.
Eliminate fault in the switch like jimr1 suggests. If thats not the problem
If you have a meter, remove the rev globe, install a good fuse, dont turn ignition on, select reverse to activate the switch, and systematically test the circuit for low resistance between power cable (I think it is a brown with green stripe to the rev) and ground.

Mine was melted, blown by the heat. And it probably was 15a, was in September so a few sleeps since then. Wire in the chassis would be the logical thing to look for!

Ditto, constant although intermittent issue, did as you did and haven't had a problem (touch wood) in five or so years now.

Hi Rick ,interesting, do you know why, by pulling the cables out of the chasey fixed your problem . Was there a bare part of a wire that was no longer touching stoped the short , or could it have been something else kind regards jimr1 ...

Reckon mine was shorting at front where harness bends back inside chassis, - cann't confirm without removing harness, it was an intermittent fault. I was at the point of running a new wire when I accidentally fixed mine

Given this seems to be a problem with 300TDI's, would it be possible to shove a length of that electrical concertina insulation stuff that's split up the side, in over that length of the loom. I've never seen it out so don't know if it'd work.

Yes, but it will become difficult after a metre or so. I run conduit over my whole loom but fitted it with the loom out of the LR. If you ft the split stuff, run a few raps of electrical tape over the section where you are sliding the conduit on as the shard edges can damage the cable. (I found anyway).
The flexible conduit is cheap and will safe lots of grief over time.

Also, you can't slid it over the end as there are splits and joins that wont fit through the conduit.

I noticed on my 2012 130 Defender the loom runs in split tube on the outside of the frame. My old 97 is inside the frame and thats where it shorted.
Im dont know if the designers are solving a problem of shorting inside the frame or opting for a cheaper easier build?
