as a matter of interest

is there anything special about a 49/50 steering wheel?

are they the same spline and clamp as a later version out of an 86"?

the only difference is the very early s1 had 2 spokes as you probably know but I have had a s2 on a s1 same spline it was just the s2 had the extra cover/spacing bit so yes an 86 will fit the early ones AFAIK

It's only the 48/49 two spoke wheels that are different but interchangeable.

The first 48 steering wheel was a Flat 2 spoke

These were used until late 1948 when a Flat 4 spoke was introduced

The flat 4 spoke lasted until mid 1949 when the flat 2 spoke was reintroduced. These were used until 1950 when the dished 4 spoke started being used. These continued right through into the series 2s

I am guessing the thread for oneBoth the 1948 two spoke and flat four spoke ones were used in the P3, they sometimes had a different horn button/centre fitting.

I know of about 5 1948 P3's (including the one in my shed) and I have never seen a 4 spoke wheel on one (until the one in your pic Diana).

There ya go, learned something new today :)

yes Diana is correct. The flat 4 spoke for the P3 had a ring at the base for an indicator. The Land Rover flat 4 spoke didn't have this .

Is there a chassis number where the steering wheels changed?
Are the steering wheels changes listed in the 80inch changes document?

I doubt it - even if it did change at a definite chasssis number (rather than the usual "alternatives"), since they wheels are interchangeable, I can't see them even recording this at the time. It would have simply been a change by the supplier.
