View Full Version : D2 Bonnet Release

I knew it would happen at the most inconvenient time.....and it did:(!
Bonnet cable was stretched or bonnet out of alignment I assume (sometimes hard to open) and on this occasion I really had to lean on the release lever. It broke:mad:.
I have searched around the fora for a logical fix but I am thinking of making my own lever ..out of ally or stainless... giving it a longer stroke and better chance of disengaging.
I eventually got the bonnet open by pulling on the cable with a pair of pliers. I have tried to realign the bonnet catch in lat, long and height but cant seem to make it any less 'hard'.
Tips, tricks or advice?

Hi Ralph,
Yep - it's a fairly simple job just to replace the whole cable which includes a new lever with a new genuine one. Route it with gradual bends where possible and it will be very easy to pull on again. You align the catch by just finger tightening the 2 bolts where the cable end joins the release mechanism below the bonnet and close the bonnet, open it then retightening the bolts.
Cheers

it will also help to double check the hinges, if the bonnets ever been off they may not be in place correctly.

Yes Dave,
I think that was the catalyst.
I had the windscreen replaced and although I (and the windscreen man) took care marking and trying to align the bonnet to the body panels, we must have been slightly out.
Where does one buy a bonnet cable and lever thingy?
I haven't seen 'em on evil bay so I guess one has to go genuine.
I'll ring our local fix-it in the next day or two.

Cant rememebr if its the disco or deefer (real landrover bonnets open with a lever in the grill) but if the sleeve is ok a gear shift cable from a pushbike can be pressed into service. Just be sure to carefully solder the end togther prior to pushing it through the sheath.

I got my cable from roverlord, 41.50 delivered overnight express, discount for being aulro member, nice bloke to talk to, only prob is the original metal ring on the end that hooks over the catch is about 2 times as small as the replacement which was eurospares branded and the damn thing wont go through the original holes at the front so i had to go behind the hheadlight, surley the td5 and v8 cant be different

I procured a cable some weeks ago, but haven't as yet fitted it.
I'll report in later.
