View Full Version : What Are Your Favourite Modifications?

With end of lease approaching and (therefore) a MY13 110 on order, I'm getting fixated on the build of the new vehicle. Of course any build depends greatly on intended purpose and (as usual) the theme of this one will be "a tourer that looks a close as possible to a stock 110".
I've just spent a couple of days buying components online everywhere from mudstuff to ebay... As this will be my 5th 110, I've got a pretty good idea of where I'll be taking the build, but there's always new products and lots of room for improvement so I'd like to hear what your favourite modifications are with the hope of borrowing a few good ideas, especially in the touring/camping category... So, what are your favourite modifications?

Cheers, Murray
The two best mods I've ever done on Defender both comes from Daniel at Mulgo.
As Murray said, the seat extensions is absolutely incredible. At 6'1'' I've had the washer option before as well as the competition's products fitted. Whatever magic he's done with the angle and height makes a world of difference in your seating position and comfort.
The second being the gas strut on the rear door. Sounds like a minor option, but at any angle on road and off road the door opens with ease and stays open. All Defender owners know the "joy" of being smashed in the back by the safari door :o while you're trying to find something back there and this fixes it easily and with no fuss.
Cheers,
Lou

For me they are favourite modifications:
Snorkel
Mulgo electric box
Breather hoses for fuel tank, diffs, gearbox extended to high up in the engine bay.
With your penchant for driving in deep water holes, they are probably essential?
Best wishes for the new 110!

Thanks to all those who posted - some excellent ideas there. I'll be taking the car down to see Daniel for an ex-Box as soon as I pick it up. I've got one on my current car and combined with a snorkel (not a RAI) it's a great "peace of mind" item, especially since the incident (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/1432486-post784.html) Quigley mentioned! I also have a bunch of protective items planned and I'm contemplating if I want chequer plate this time or not and the roof console is also being reconsidered. Bull bar, winch, one of Murray's wheel carriers, raised fuel breather, on board (hard wired) compressor, snow cowl, glove box, dual batteries, external power outlets (one of my favourite comping mods) and rear work lights are also planned.
Lorryman100 - looks great. An excellent list of improvements that have a subtle visual impact and really retain the factory look. The headlights look and sound intriguing... I like the Aerial - very practical as I have to put mine down when I go off road.
disco hand brake lever and a narow cubby box
Do you have any photos? I'm really curious about the hand brake lever. Apparently the MY13 has a sub-woofer in the cubby box, so it will be interesting to see how much space it consumes.
water tank with pressure pump to a tap on the back door
Kelvin -do you have a photo? I've bought a pump, filter & cooler-style water tap and I'll be ordering a Front Runner 36 Litre water tank (http://www.frontrunner.co.za/water-tank-36l-defender-puma.html), but I haven't settled on placement of the tap.

the sub-woofer is attached to the back of the cubby box, so you loose no space. If however you change the cubby box you will need to make sure the woofer fits.
I too fitted the Mulgo rear door gas strut and the rear passenger door extensions minor mods but improve the comfort level.

Thanks. The headlights are nice and bright and more importantly they are a legal upgrade compared to HID's as they don't need an auto leveller or wash system retrofitted. They are expensive though, and in hindsight I would probably not have bought them as I previously had crystal headlights with PIAA bulbs fitted which were bright. The beam pattern of the LED's is very sharp with a visible cut off line and illuminate the road very well. The above pics didn't show the LED sidelights which come from a company called RDX and they are full LED and look like OEM.

MUD Defender Roof Console (http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/mud-defender-roof-console.html)
Hmmmm.... roof consoles! My current car has an outback roof console (http://www.4wdinteriors.com/roof_console.html) that houses my UHF that I was going to move across, but I've been contemplating the possibility of not installing it. The idea I'm toying with is mounting the iPad (or maybe an iPad mini) up above the rear vision mirror to give me a clear dashboard (because my current setup obscures the clock and the police don't like it much). That would leave me with the problem of where to put the UHF, so I'm thinking about either mounting it in the centre console somehow or selling it and getting a unit that has a separate head such as a GME TX3520W (http://www.gme.net.au/products/radio-communications/uhf-477mhz-cb-radios/TX3520W) with the head mounted on the dash behind the clock and an external speaker flush mounted in the roof liner. So many good choices!
I can't escape the notion that I'm over thinking it all...:D

Thanks John, that might be an alternative to the Front Runner tank I've been planning...
Is there an off-the-shelf water tank available for under the driver's feet or did you construct your own?
Is is susceptible to damage from underneath when driving over rock steps or boulders?
Does it heat up from the exhaust?
I think someone (was it GAV110?) had an under-floor locker there... and come to think of it one of my '85 Counties had a 75L fuel tank that was mounted up under the driver's seat by the previous owner. That had a hefty steel plate (probably 10Kg!) bolted there for protection when rock hopping.

Daniel from mulgo does the sill tanks, 60lt on the drivers side and 40lt on the passengers side. I have mine set up as drivers fuel and passengers water. With the font runner drivers side rear quarter tank I get 180lt of fuel across the 3 tanks. The thing I like is the weight distribution as its not all behind the axle like most long range tanks. They all fill up from the standard filling point.
I have never noticed heat build up from the exhaust, as its on the other side of the chassis rail but yes it is susceptible to damage, Nugget made up some great guards for them which I keep meaning to talk to him about.
I believe that Gav used the tanks for storage and had a hole cut with a removable panel in the drivers footwell into the tank for recovery gear.
My favourite modification would have to be portals :wasntme:
After that its the simple mulgo things like the exbox, rear door strut and second row door extenders, basic things Landrover should have done.......
let me know if you dont want that roof console as I might be interested.

I agree with you that sill tanks provide the best weight distribution, but without portals or a lift I think they'd be in for a few scrapes and dents if I went in that direction. At this stage I'm still thinking of the 36L Frontrunner water tank, but I'll look under the driver's floor to see what possibilities there might be. A custom made tank would be cheaper than the Front Runner tank, but it would probably need a protection plate.
I'll let you know about the roof console, but it could be a long time before I make a decision because if I don't install it then I'll keep it around until I'm certain that I won't I change my mind...
180L  Should be enough to get you out of town if a zombie apocalypse occurs. Just keep a couple of chainsaws handy :D
Glad to hear that the portals are still your favourite modification... I hope they're all sorted now as it's been a long journey for you.

Well there you go you have just made a perfect justification for fitting portals! Failing that I might see what Nugget did for his sill tank protection and how heavy that is.
No problems about the roof console, I am not in any rush as its for the CTIS controller which is a very long way off at this stage......
180lt is getting me around 1450km with the portals which is about 12.5 l/100km and much better than I expected given I was getting around 12 l/100km before fitting them.

Thanks stealth - any photos? I've been thinking about putting hinges on the blanking plate on the driver's side front wing (a bit like the GMB Fender Locker (http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/products/security/gmb-fender-locker.html)) and making use of the space under there - perhaps for the winch controller or if I go with a water tank under the driver's foot-well then maybe putting the filler tube under the blanking plate. 20-30 liters of space? that opens up a whole new range of possibilities :D

1 - Bulkhead removal bar
2 - Mulgo seat rails
3 - In cabin winch control via an Albright contactor and the Raptor console it is housed in.
4 - A 500amp marine isolator that is operated by a remote switch and cuts power to all but one hidden fuse box. Great piece of mind from a security perspective and easy to access and isolate the battery quickly from a safety perspective.

Thanks John, that might be an alternative to the Front Runner tank I've been planning...
Is there an off-the-shelf water tank available for under the driver's feet or did you construct your own? Fitted by original owner - apparently a local manufactured one in Alice Springs (but I painted over the label years ago!)
Is is susceptible to damage from underneath when driving over rock steps or boulders? Yes - if I were building it I would make it smaller and not extending below the chassis - currently in need of repair!
Does it heat up from the exhaust? No, exhaust on the Isuzu is on the opposite side outside the chassis. But does warm up from the road in hot weather

Thanks Steane, you've done a great job with that truck :TakeABow::TakeABow:
I've been considering in-cabin winch controls. My current 110 has an winch cut-off switch neatly tucked away on the steering column (where the choke used be on earlier petrol models). That switch activates a 500 amp relay.
I'm thinking of a slightly different setup in the new car with a double throw switch (in the choke location again) that simultaneously enables the winch and activates a 500 amp relay to bypass the dual battery controller (I recently burnt one out after winching - despite what the brochure said). In addition to that I'll be looking for a location to permanently mount an in-cabin winch (in/out) switch.
Are the yellow switches on your raptor console the winch swithces?
The marine isolator sounds like a good idea, but it probably wouldn't play well with the Puma electrics - the car would have to re-boot before I could start it :wasntme:
Daniel seems to have sold a lot of seat rails!

One of those missile switches is an on/off for power to the winch control switch which is a momentary on/off/on carling switch. Up for line out and down for line in. I wanted a switch that couldnt easily be activated accidentally and the missile switch fits that bill.
Probably is a lot easier to run an isolator on a 300tdi, there is only one cable to worry about :o

It would have save me a close encounter of the flashing-red-and-blue-lights variety on my last outback trip...
Out of interest what does CC cost and whats the recommended system?

Chook,
Looking at it myself and I got this reply back from Davis Performance (they're in NSW and I'm in WA):
Thank you for your enquiry,
The Cruise Control kit is $900.00 fitted I say fitted as it is the only way it can be purchased. We (Davis Performance) do not fit these units they are sold by our supplier and as a condition of sale must be installed by the there recommended installer.
The kit is called Aus Cruise by Autron if you would like to see if they have offices in W.A., I hope this helps
Land Rover, Range Rover Service, Performance, Parts and Accessories (http://www.davisperformance.com/defender/parts.html#cruise)
Autron Australia (http://www.autron.com.au/pages/Auscruise/Auscruise.php)
I suppose a system is a system, but I really like the control on this one (appears to be the Ford Ranger Manual one - make sense on the engine I suppose)) which appears to be pretty solid.
Cheers,
Lou

Chook,

Cost of Cruise control?

Don't know what you'd pay, I fitted my own. Total cost about $5.00 for a couple of switches and some wire from jcar and an hour of my time to wire up and fit. I have a Td5 so its a simple job. Not sure how it would work on any other model though.

Like the roo bar it has paid for itself many, many times over. In fact I find it hard to think of any of the other mods that I have that have had similar rewards.

That's why they're my favourites and thats why I absolutely require them.

Mools - The TD5 has a cruise control function already on the on-board computer that just needs to be connected up with a controller. Pumas don't (AFAIK) and therefore require a full cruise control unit to be procured and installed.
Leyland1980 - There is good documentation on this forum on how to do it (for a TD5), so a bit of searching should point you in the right direction.

I've added a few really good upgrades that have previously been mentioned.
Gotta say that my rear corner bumperettes have been money well spent. They have saved my rear quarter panels from expensive damage on 2 occasions.
Ironically I bought them second hand off a fella who unfortunately rolled his car.

Thanks - I've got a lot of protection on my current car and I recon it has saved me money. As far a bumperettes go, I've got a custom set on order with Daniel for the new car. There's nothing as good as getting *exactly* what you want :D
