Whilst Im away from my homebrew(holidaying in Albany) Im trying some shop bought ciders.
If you want an nice one that will blow your head off grab an Old Rosie at 7.3%.
James Squire Orchard Crush was already my favorite, discovered that last time we were down here.
My new favorite,Rekorderlig Winter Cider,it has vanilla and cinamon. They even say you can drink it warm:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Been drinking cider for 50 years. Mercury Sweet is my all time favourite. Toohey's Five Seeds are second.

Bulmer's to their shame, bought up a number of local cideries in the late 70's-80's and closed them to eliminate competition and increase market share. Price war accounted for most of the other local commercial cideries.

I have tried a few of the local boutique ciders that have appeared in recent years. These to me are like most of the boutique beers, taste funny and grossly overpriced.

I have mainly had Rekorderlig, I drink the pear one. I had a berry one overseas and it was ok.

I love Little Creatures Pipsqueak cider but it must be off the tap. The bottled stuff is too carbonated.

Mercury Draught has always been a favorite. There is a great little cider place at Harcourt called Henry's. they do something called The Duck & Bull which is great. Unfortunately, most ciders are now made from concentrated apple juice, sugar, water, alcohol and co2. The are not actually fermented or brewed. Most of the concentrate is imported. I guess it's the way of the world.

Harcourt is $15-20 a bottle. No thanks.

Is it also grossly overpriced like the Little Creatures beer?

If you get proper cider (good old West Country scrumpy) that's made from nothing but apples, not carbonated, no preservative, there are no after effects.

In fact it's so good that I'm sure it counts as one of your 5 a day!

(There may be one slightly undesirable after effect, and there was a famous Devon cider brand named "CrippleCock" as a result. It was 9% alcohol)

Strongbow Clear is my choice. It's a nice, dry cider(Don't worry about the low carb label).

Good at room temp during the colder months and great icy cold during the summer.

Cheers,

Jason

What are your favourite cider kits?

I put one down a while back, and have been checking its progress. 2 months later, it's now really nice to drink...... but there's only 6 bottles left. :o

I can't remember the name of the kit, just a black label with orange cap.

Dry with a nice apple flavour, and no stale beer taste like strongbow.

I"m a big fan of cider. Even more so now that I can't drink beer. I had a very brief stage of liking Rekorderlig, but it's SO sweet! Now I couldn't drink more than 1 of them before moving onto something dryer unless I'm feeling very sweet toothed. I've had the winter one warm and enjoyed it. Kind of like an apple based sangria.

Mercury and Strongbow I find the original/draught ones the best mid point of sweet/dry. I do quite like Bulmers and Magners as well which works well because most pubs have one on tap these days.

For something different I like trying local brews. There's a lot of places sell cider in the Yarra Valley (wine region) now, so we often pickup some new brands on weekends away.

I am not a huge cider fan, but the stuff these guys make is quite good - better than the mainstream stuff:

Core Cider (http://www.corecider.com.au/)

I also had some great cider from these guys:
