I have just acquired another series 1. this one is a 1958 model ( same as me) 109 inch ute. It came from a member of this site who has quite a collection including one with Royal connections. I needed a drivable Series 1 for some events comming up soon in WA and the 88 wont be ready in time.Plus the 109 can carry plenty of fuel ,fridge, beer, wine ,food , beer and camping gear necessary for those long desert trips . Only problem is its on the other side of Australia so after much debate and number crunching we have decided to put it on a car carrier cost $1600. It would have been a great adventure to drive back but with historic rego and the possibility of a breakdown back of woop woop we decided against it. It has been restored mechanicaly but the paint has been left in natural patina. I like the look and wont be changing it. I will probably have to add some indicators and maybe an alternator to charge up the fridge battery but thats about it. All we need now is a name im thinking maybe........ Keith!!!:)

Hi Mike. Its already got a name and indicator lights.:)

I call it Borumbah as this is stencilled on the mudguard but a bit hard to see now. You can change it if you like though some say its bad luck:(

There is an extra bulb in the tail light for the flasher and a double filament in the Lucas 488,s up front that does the same job.
I fitted a plug for the number plate wire so that if the tail gate needs to be removed the wire can be disconnected easily.
It always bugged me that mud always got plastered over the clutch and brake levers on these so I made a inner guard with flap that stops this. Keeps it much cleaner.

Hi Keith,

Ok Borumba it is . Thats a great idea with the indicators and the tailgate. I will do some research on Borumba Station and see if we can come up with a pic of the 109 when she was newer.

Found a photo of "Old Borumba Station" in the Imbil National Park. see link

The station was owned by the Webb Brothers who where Country singers and they penned a song about the Station.

I believe this to be the setting of The Call of the Bellbirds, a country music song, written and sung by the Webb Brothers, Fabian, Marius and Berard.
The Webb Family lived here for a period, beside Borumba Creek. This "wild little valley, 'bout a hundred miles from town" is adjacent to the the pine forests of Imbil State Forest, and nestles at the western foot of Mt Borumba. Here blue gums grow along the creek flats and bellbird colonies ring their tinkling calls.
THE CALL of the BELLBIRD
I've been a wayward wanderer, but found I like to rest
In my home up in the mountains, the place I love the best.
I wandered to the city in quest of better times
But now I am returning to my home up in the pines.
*CHORUS
So ring your bell, bellbird, you're a-calling me back home
To my home up in the mountains no more I will roam
For there will be contentment, and my heart will be at ease
Where the bellbird's call at evening floats on the mountain breeze.
* It seems I hear the bellbird in the valley far below
It brings back old-time memories of the days so long ago
So I'm finished with my wandering - I'm goin' to settle down
In this wild little valley 'bout a hundred miles from town
* I'm leaving in the morning - I'll soon be back again
To my life up in the mountains where my heart will know no pain
And then again at evening I'll sit outside the door
Just to listen to the bellbirds and hear their call once more
*
* Ring ting-a-ling-a ring ting-a-ling-a bellbird
Ring ting-a-ling-a call me back home
Ring ting-a-ling-a ring ting-a-ling-a bellbird
Ring ting-a-ling-a call me back home
Ring ting-a-ling-a call me back home
Since the construction of Borumba Dam downstream on the Yabba, this valley has been cut off from easy access to the world, except for a mountain road through Imbil State Forest. The Webb Brothers have since lived on the original family property "Thornside", about 40kms north of here.
Today, most of this property is now national park estate.

Thats a good search. The name on the guard has an H on the end so I have always looked for Borumbah without success.
I know the Webb brothers, they come to Kilkivan quite often especially during the Great Kilkivan Horse Ride. I will ask them if they know anything about it.

I believe it's bad luck for boats, but boats are inherently water proof (they keep the water out) which is completely opposite to Land Rovers, so maybe it's good luck to change the name of a Land Rover???:p

Yes and whats worse I met a whole bunch of other victims at thre classic car show last week up at Whiteman Park. These WA guys are not just show and shine they use their Landys to there full potential. They have several big trips comming up including the CSR next year again. This is why I decided to get the 109 it can carry lots of fuel and gear for this sort of trip. Having a drivable S1 will be very useful in my 88 restoration as i was not that good at cataloging where all the bits came from when pulling it down. I will be able to have a peek at the 109 and work out where everything goes. Being a ute it will also come in handy around the house shifting stuff and dump trips. I sent you a PM as well John.

Are you going to have Klonk ready for the trip up the CSR next year . Should be a hoot. There are quite a few very serious series 1 owners in Perth. They are down your way at Lucky bay from tomorrow for a week or so.:)
Yes Borumbah looks the goods Keith uses it as a run around. I may need to check a few things out before the trip but its running well at present and i dont forsee any major issues.

After the Webb's had to give up Borumbah ( yes thats how they spelt it) another family took over for a while until the Govt bought it back. That was Andy Sullivan the Grandad of The Current Sullivans the stock and real estate agents in Gympie. Fabian Webb seems to think that Andy Sullivan may have owned the 109 and he had to drive it quite a distance through the logging tracks to get to Borumbah after the dam cut off the access. I will email the Sullivans and see if they know anything. Any way I will still make up a CD of the Webb boys to play while we are out on the Canning Stock route LOL.

Yes they will need truck axels like the Circus tents use. Blowing a gale here just puled the outdoor setiing from the pool. Maybe i should have left it there for a while. There will be a a contingent of series 1 's doing the Canning Stock route for the 65 th aniversary. At least 2 ....48 's will be going and several others including my new 109. Have a google of the CSR and see if you would enjoy that type of terrain.

Borumbah being 58 has those rare fully floating axles. If you are going to work it hard it may pay to install series 2 full floaters with the spacer as per pic of Jumbuck.
Leave the originals for show because if you break one they will be hard to replace. Especially out in the middle of Woop Woop.

I do have a pair of series one axles in 88" 'Monty', I am thinking of changing to series two backend and maybe a Salisbury at that! :o

Barter time, what do I need??

Both 'Monty' and the 80" ( yet unnamed but could be called 'Les' in memory of a deceased friend ), have had the injustice of being hacked to install Holden engines and especially the 1952 80", could do with a period 2 litre Land Rover back in it, but I do have a Series 3 2.25 Diesel that would make the 80" a great little bush machine.
Then the hacked radiator support and chassis could stay the same, as they are already modified to move the radiator forward for the previous engine.

Oh! I digress.
I can check to see that they are the correct length and the splines aren't starting to twist, then will AlexH get them for his 1957 109" ? :D:D

I just got back from a trip to Exmouth in the Defer. Yes it has full floating axels apparently. I will ask around over here if anyone has a spare set of series 2 axels to use. I did see some on a station up north a few months back. There were several series 2 's laying around with many parts still available. Must unpack and get all the fish in the freezer.

Ticket booked and paid $100 plus points airfare to Brisvegas from Perth. heading up to Gympie on the Tilt train ( I think) next Monday which I just found out is a public holiday. Depending on upcoming work commitments I can either take my time and drive the 109 back to Perth take a week at 60 kph. Or if things get busy put it on a car carrier. Would be quite fun to drive back so that's the preferred option. I was thinking of putting a 200 litre drum in the back for long range tank I have a jiggle syphon . Spares required plugs ,points , condenser, radiator hoses, oil filter ,engine oil , gearbox diff oil. The usual route I take is the most direct cut off Dubbo and follow the Darling river through Bourke ,Tilpa and on to Broken Hill the Port Augusta and over the Nullarbor. Any tips on possible problems to look for or where to get assistance if necessary along the route appreciated.

Driving Borumbah into Gympie for the roadworthy in the morning.

I better mention its got these period freewheel hubs by MAP. Mayflower Automotive Products. I dont know how good they are but if I was going into the unknown I would be swapping them out for flanges.
Its got a screw jack with handle, crankhandle and a wheel spanner.
All other tools you will need to bring too.

---- Thor automatic hubs very rare.

And very dangerous, I cannot remember the hubs' brand now, but I had some automatic hubs fitted to my first Land Rover.

They disengaged under engine braking, not what is needed on slippery grass heading down a steep hill.

Back home again, it breezed through the RWC, all good:D
Yes the hubs are branded MAP, quite rare too.
These are manual with a screwdriver slot on the side.
I believe MAP have a hub that looks the same outside but is an automatic.

Took the GPS in to check the speedo again.
A good cruising speed is 80k on the GPS and it shows 58MPH on the speedo:eek:

They are oil lubed from the swivel.

Cant find out much more except some Canadians say they are the best hubs. Looks like MAP sold Thor hubs rebadged or visa versa. If the end float is good and it passed the roadworthy ok should be no wobbles .
I'm putting together my tool kit and bits and pieces. Off to the quack to get a chunck of my nose removed after lunch. Anyone who knows a bit more about these hubs or has a diagram etc please let me know.

The cap on the tappet cover is bolted on Mike, this is the breather. There should be a filler tube on the passenger side of the motor on the pressed steel plate that covers the exhaust rockers, give the old girl a drink through there!

Good luck on your trip, it's good practice for the CSR.

Hi Mike, Sounds like you are having fun. Your 2ltr engine holds 5.5 ltrs, hope you don't need that much & fill down the long breather tube, which is the fill tube. Probably best to use a funnel as I find most ends up on the floor other wise. Providing your oil consumption does not exceed your fuel consumption all is good:D. Safe trip.

The level for the T box is that little square headed plug to the left of the handbrake drum. Remember I said the corners were rounded off and I had to build it up with dobs of weld to get it out when I first did it. A small shifter is the go. Dont screw it in too hard though as they seem to jam in tight. Its a tapered thread.

Going well Mike. For future ref the transfer oil can be checked with a dipstick made from welding rod (coat hangar wire) whatever. Make it good and long with a nice round bent round handle at the top. Make a notch in the wire 4.5 inches from the bottom, then when inserted through the fill plug into the corner the level is correct if on the notch mark. This trick courtesy of Graeme, & works a treat. Take care.

I crossed the border this morning . Had a few dramas with wet dizy after I took her to the car wash in Broken Hill left about 1/2 a ton of mud and blocked their drain(sorry) . I dried her out and as good as new again. I'm in Yulta now heading to Port Augusta another 217 K's to go.

Great work Mike, loving it..
The photo is outside the old Bordergate hotel (the pub part is in NSW the toilets in SA, they used to take great delight in drinking in NSW and peeing in SA!!) at COCKBURN (pronounced CO_BURN!! :) )

You were in YUNTA on the barrier highway, if you chose the right route you'll pass through WILMINGTON and should call in to the toy museum and talk to Dave. Not sure if Ellard is about he lives not too far from there too.

Keep smiling
(even if you must be deaf by now :) )

How did it stop, was the power interrupted to the coil, did the key accidentally turn off? :p

I was making good time across SA but occasionally the old girl would cut out for a few seconds and start again . Then as I came into Wilmington I could not believe my eyes there parked on the side of the road was another 109 same colour same condition unrestored. I pulled up and met Dave and his son who own the Wilmington Toy Museum. We had a good chat and then went down the road to visit another ALURO member Ellard and check out his fire engines. Then on the way back to town my old girl decided to stop. We found the coil had died Dave gave me a spare coil and a spare dizzy, points, and replaced a blown headlamp. Off I went again all running sweet for about 30 mins and the coil blew again. So called the RAA and got a tow into town . Will get a new coil in the morning and get the auto sparky to check out the power to the coil from the ignition. There seems to be a short that is making the coils blow. Better it happend here than on the Nullabor. More pics to come

Hi Mike

A near constant current through the primary winding would make the coil heat up, this can lead to a breakdown in the insulation between the windings and this in turn upsets the magnetic field within the coil leading to more heat.

Check your wire leading into the points and make sure it cant momentary short out, when the points are open.
The condenser needs to be changed for the same reason, if it breaks down with movement / or vibration it can also short that wire coming from the coil to the points.

The other thing that sometimes trips people up, is the fitting of a low voltage coil meant for a circuit that has resistance between the ignition switch and it's coil, such as a 7 volt coil in a Holden with a red motor. The coil meant for a Land Rover has 12 volts stamped on the bottom on the canister.

Failing that, to use a low voltage coil, fit a dropper resister in line of the ignition to distributor wire.
( Cars fitted with that type of wiring, can also have another feed coming direct from a momentary-on contact on the starter solenoid to the coil, this allows a hotter spark while the starter motor is being engaged ).

Check your rotor button by holding the high tension wire from the coil just above the rotor button wiper ( where the carbon button sits in the centre of the rotor button ) and if there is a strong spark jumping at that place, that means the rotor button has a internal short down through to the top of the distributor drive shaft.
Old bakelite tends to get porous with age and can hold moisture within itself causing a short, ( --- you did get the distributor wet the other day ), so best to change both the cap and the rotor as well as the coil.

When setting the points gap on a distributor that may be worn, check the points gap at each of the four lobes in case the distributor shaft is laying a bit to one side.

That's enough Arthur, you would worry sheep! :whistling:

Remember that Borumbah is wired negative earth not positive as is usual.
This means that the negative on the coil goes to the dizzy.
Sounds more like a condenser problem but you will get it sorted.
That electronic fuel pump will only work with negative earth so dont let them swap it over.

Dave found the dizzy had come lose and was wobbling around and this had pulled the joiner apart almost on the neg wire from the coil to the dizzy. I plugged this joiner back together and got a start then limped into Daves shed . I think this killed the first coil. Dave gave me a coil of unknown origin or voltage and it started up and ran for 20ks but then also overheated and failed. This one could have been wrong voltage or even faulty when it was removed. As Dave says he doesn't throw anything away LOL. I called the sparky this morning and will be there when he opens up.

Made it to Ceduna and hot a cabin for the night. The trick is running great loves the cold air and the new coil isn't getting hot any more could be the exhaust manifold transferring heat at low speeds anyway its working fine and I have a spare just in case. That's. 460 K's in an afternoon from Port Augusta to Ceduna didn't get away till after 1.00 pm. I went to the wreckers to pick up a cheap coil for a spare but all the cars were to modern and had resistor coils but I did find another Series 1 shorty down the back with some good hood bits for a soft top.just enough to make a bikini roof for the 109. Heading West across the Eyre Peninsula in the evening you chase the sunset and it lasts for ages. See the pic.
I have to pass through the WA border Gestapo on the morning so I will head to the car wash here first and do a bit of degreasing . It seems to be leaking less oil since I tightened the banjo bolt behind the head is there another banjo bolt at the other end of that oil line? The plugs I changed were not oily in fact they were pinky brown and looked like it was running a bit lean if anything. I am so relieved that its running well tomorrow I cross the Nullabor plain and after that its all downhill to Perth .

Home at last and the wife had moved all the new cars out of the garage so Borumbah can have a night under cover. What a day the last 100 k into Perth was very hectic getting pushed along by trucks and with so few passing lanes. Then down the scarp all good until I took off from lights on the bypass and developed a mid range miss. When I persisted and held the throttle down she suddenly surged forward and cleared itself but did it a few more times. I suppose the next thing is to pull the motor out and start on the rebuild. Although a bit noisy the gear box, transfer case and diffs didn't use any oil at all on the way home. The Swivel hubs are packed with grease and I was surprised how well it steered no wandering at all. This morning I woke up at 4.30 am and it was raining not a nice way to start the day getting dressed in the rain but at least it gave me an early start. I took Borumbah over to Graeme's shed today and we did a compression test. 2 pots 125 psi and 2 at 120 so that's within spec going by the book . Graeme took her for a spin and noticed the gearbox is getting a bit noisy so I will do a bit on that soon but the engine should be good. She's burning nice grey plugs and has plenty of power. The miss has healed itself and after tightening the sump and side cover bolts a little the oil loss has decreased to and acceptable level. I will fit new gaskets to all the leaky bits . Had a great day at the the anniversary . Good to meet so many people I knew from the net face to face.

Ok I did tighten the sump , side cover and base of the dip stick tube but the oil leaks have disappeared. It was fuming badly and burning oil now it isn't?????. On the compression test it pulled 125 on 2 potts and 120 on the other 2 . It's running beautifully at the moment after I lashed out and bought a timing light and set the points. Could a good long run with several oil changes clean up the engine and get rid of gunk around the rings? I am pulling the gear box out of the 88 tomorrow and getting it reconditioned so I can do a quick changeover on the 109. I have been driving it around Perth a bit with no problems it keeps up with traffic ok. I called the Qld Dept of T'port today to find out where my plates are and they are now sending them direct to Perth. I have finished the video but its to long for UTube at 30 mins so now have to cut it into 2 sections when I work out how.:)

Yes it could; classic sign of stuck rings!

It might be worth using an engine flush such as Nulon lifter cleaner to get most of the black stuff out, especially as the compression is good. I would be inclined to take the sump off and clean the inside and anything else that needs doing and put a new gasket on it,

Borumbah got a thorough polishing inside and out. The dash looks like new and even where there was no paint the alloy is now shiny inside the engine bay looks like glass. Bunnings supplied 2 door stops so the only hole left unplugged is where a radio aerial once protruded and should be able to get a bung from Clark Robber for that. I have found a replacement for the unobtainable gearbox needle bearings 91466 . Even Dunsfold's had run out of these .
These are the ones on the lay shaft small diameter in Series 1 's . SKF 94628 is the same and there are several others including a Cat Part see the very handy link below . may come in handy with other bearing match ups.

While attempting to adjust the spring on the brake light switch yesterday I was reminded of a "get me home" fix that became permanent.
I had noticed the brake pedal flopping about and on investigation saw the circlip holding things together on the shaft had decided to go walkabout.
The solution eventually was to remove the grease nipple, screw in a setscrew with two nuts holding the large washer in place. It worked so well I left it there.
I gather it survived the trip or you would have mentioned it.
You will need to remove it to replace it with the grease nipple to grease the shaft.
Then you can either refurbush the groove for a new circlip or replace the setscrew.
On replacement it is important that the nuts are run back up the screw then the screw made tight bottoming in the hole or it will work loose. The first nut is then run down against the washers then the second nut used to lock it.

Didn't notice that but will look into it tomorrow morning. The gearbox is almost complete just waiting on the lay shaft to arrive from Sydney. I fitted a reconditioned hand throttle today . New gear box mounts are comming from Dunsfolds. I'm still driving Borumbah around while we are reconditioning the box out of my 88. Was the clutch replaced at all or do you remember what it was like. I have a spare in the 88 if necessary.

Hi Mike. I had the clutch out and the flywheel surfaced only a few months ago. The plate thickness was near new so put it back in.
I thought the gearbox mounts would have been OK for a while yet.

I need a set for the 88 anyway so if the mounts are good i will reuse them. Good news on the clutch it feels pretty good to drive. When I picked it up from your place it had 750 miles on the clock now has 4500 miles on the clock and going strong.

I swapped the air cleaner from the 88 to the 109 today. Bead blasted the lid and bowl and carefully cleaned up the body . Now all painted in gloss black and hopefully dry by morning. Now here's a question every restored Series 1 I see has a black air cleaner but under the black paint on the 88 cleaner I found paint the same colour as the body Air force grey. Were they originally painted same colour as the body? :)

Hi Keith
I pulled the brake pedal out replaced the thrust washer between the two pedals and the correct spacer and refitted the circlip and grease nipple. Now works like a new one. Fortunately I had the parts on hand . I will carry a spare circlip with me as there is a lot riding on on little clip.

Correct air filter and hose fitted a bit of paint here and there and a polish and it's looking very tidy. Just worked out my long range tanks that will sit I'm the space forward of the rear wheels should hold 50 litres per side. I have filler caps , hose and breathers left over from the tanks I put in the Defender. Thinking of running a water tank (poly tube) in the pto shaft hole should hold around 30 litres .

New gearbox is in and what a difference so quite. I could even put a radio in it now and listen to it while driving. I put the floor back in to drive home but I have decided to pull it out again tomorrow and add some soundproofing under the floor panels and give the seat box and floor a coat of paint. I wont be touching the exterior but having the inside looking a bit better wont detract from the original patina. The gear change is nice and firm Graeme did a fantastic job on the box . Only trouble I can now hear a tick tick sounds like the exhaust manifold gasket may have developed a leak.

The manifold gasket is the same as the 6 cylinder but you throw a way the middle bit or keep it for a spare I can be trimmed and used in pinch. I was able to buy everything over the shelf here in Perth at 4wd spares in Welshpool for under $20 bucks. I used some of that high temp silicone as wel lto hold everything in place and give a good seal.

Noticed a lose bolt at the rear top generator mount so tightened it up then the fan belt started to squeal . Hmmmmm loosened it off maybe belt to tight still squeal . Pulled the genny out bearing is U/S so drilled out the 4 rivets and pushed it out . Easy to find bearing and I will tap the holes where the rivets where and put in some bolts. Not much to these things windings look good Brushes have heaps left only 1 bearing and the rear is a bush. I felt up where the loose bolt was and the tube mount was also loose 1/4 whitworth. It looks like a spacer may be missing I think when I pulled the rear mount tight it pulled the belt out of alignment and that was causing the squeal but the bearing would have gone very soon anyway . The parts manual shows a couple of spacers numbers 16 and 26 can anyone tell me the dimensions of these and I can turn a couple up.

Well that was surprisingly easy a plan that went together. I tapped the rivet holes to take an M5 bolts . Bought a sealed bearing this morning for $5 and its all back together before the paint has dried properly . Still need to fit the spacers to line up the pullies . I didn't want to spend too much on this as I will fit a replica alternator for the CSR trip. Running a fridge and dual batteries will be to much drain on a 10 amp genny. Winter ,paint dries slow may haveto bake in front of the heater.

"What's that rash on your chest and tummy "she asked " Landrover Bonnet rash" I replied .
Been leaning over the guard all day sorting out the generator spacing. Even with the correct spacers stolen of the 88 the pullies where 3 mm out and causing the belt to make a noise. I added a few washers until a straight edge across the pullies had everything lined up. Easy you may think but took around 5 hours to finish. Once I pushed out the bolt with adjusting arm then it wasn't long enough 2 and 1/4 inch the book says but needed 2 and 1/2 to get the thread started. Once the front bolts are bushed up in line I had to bush up the rear mount as well or it tried to pull everything back out of square. Any way its all done and now runs quite as a mouse. No belt noise at all . I found a few nuts missing from my diffs while retrieving dropped bolts or spanners 4 in total . So checked all the diff bolts surprised to find several have come loose .
We are are taking the old girl for a picnic up in the hills tomorrow and give the new transfer and gearbox case a work out. Will post some pics of the hill climbs and swamps.

I had a environmental disaster this arvo. Did an oil change and filter managed to do all this in the carpet in the shed without spilling a drop. Then started her up and I heard a squissssssing noise . Shut down looked under and there lays about 3 litres of Penrites finest 20 W 60 laying on the floor.:o when I replaced the filter I added a new rubber gasket as you are supposed to do. I pushed the gasket into place with a Tbar allen key. Then tightened her up not too tight don't want to strip anything. Apparently not tight enough to seat the new rubber gasket oil poured out from here. Then when I check the tension it was loose again. Retightened add another $30 of oil and problem solved. Then the clean up began we still have carpet in the shed only there is now a 1mx 1m square missing. Yes I did put oil on the seal before I pushed it in.

I had a environmental disaster this arvo.

My Dad wasn't amused :censored: when he realised that a portion of the large amount of oil under the tractor running the flood irrigation pump was supposed to be in the tractors engine.

His workman at that time, had stopped what he was doing to have a long yarn with a farm equipment mechanic that in turn was supposed to be over servicing a neighbours baler, the workman was about to complete a oil change and hadn't got around to fitting the sump plug when he was interrupted.

The oil was carried to the tractor up in the paddock in the back of the farm's series one soft top SWB Land Rover in it's 200 litre/44 gallon drum with a hand operated oil pump, so as soon as the serviceman left, Dad's workman popped the pump nozzle in the tractor engine's filler neck and then started pumping.
He kept on pumping, stopping occasionally to check the dipstick, noting the oil wasn't showing yet, he went back to pumping some more and finally only stopping when he felt his boot was getting damp.

Well I had quite a bit of leakage going on around the sump gasket and oil dip stick base. Since i have tightend every thing up its a lot less. I was going through around 1/1.5 litre per tank of fuel on the way over. I changed the oil twice. By the time i crossed the Nullabor the sludge had been flushed out and rings loosned up and consumption went down . I run Penrite 20W 60 and change it every 2000ks .

Yes , good to catch up and hear the news.
You mentioned the steering box starting to get some freeplay.
I would have someone move the steering wheel for you to check where the movement is. As its come on fairly quickly I suspect it could be the arms that clamp to the relay. You might be able to tighten the clamp bolts a bit more.
Then there is the tie rod ends but they should be OK as I put new ones in.

All of the above, it does need someone else to gently rock the steering wheel from side to side, while you have a look at all the joints and mounting surfaces for any subtle free play and the movement can be very slight.

The mounting plate bolts where the steering box is fastened into the mounting plate should be checked to see if those nuts need a nip up, also there are couple of bolts go through the firewall and the three that through the chassis.

Both tanks in hooked up and working yet to be filled. It worked out very well the tanks are clamped in place by the bracket mounted on the spring hanger and a strap from the outer front tub bolts. I decide not to weld the tank to the brackets as this may have caused a crak later on with chassis flex. Now everything can move a bit . I will fill them up tomorrow in daylight and keep an eye on them for any leaks. should be ok as we pressure tested everything. Now to fit modify and fit the overdrive . and build the canopy.

So we puled the carby off and cleaned all the jets gave it a blow out and put it back. Well it ran worse than before hmmmm played around with everything correct jets in the correct holes everything clean but running rich and hunting a bit.
Eventually we gave up and fitted a new spare carby. Now runs beautiful so quite I cant hear it,so low revs the red lights coming on for the generator . The old carby had new needle and seat and was in pretty good nick so I am a bit lost as to what it could be. The diaphragms in the pump looked good and it has obviously been overhauled recently. It was only running rough on idle .\

Finally got my new hoops bent up and ready to install. I used heavy wall inch gall water pipe . They engineers took a bit of time to get that constant curve across the top and then the 90 deg wide radius bend while keeping the width exact. After the hoops are welded up its off to the canvas man. Then fit that overdrive. I took Borumbah into Southern Landrover this morning while we were dropping off the Defender for some warranty work. She attracted quite a bit of attention the service manager didn't know I was with the wife dropping off the Defender and asked if he could help me. " Yes" I said " "I have this Landrover here its only 55 years old and its burning oil can you fix it on warranty " . You should have seen the look on his face " Sir ,they all use a little oil, I am sure the warranty period has expired some time ago " LOL:)

Its around 36 deg today and we took Borumbah down the beach for us to have a swim. Coming home after midday the dreaded hot day fuel blues started. The Pump even my u-beaut electronic replica started to cavitate and make that sucking but nothings pumping noise. Once we started moving again it was ok but I am think of placing a pusher pump close to the tank to overcome this on hot days. Unleaded fuel doesn't like to pump when it gets hot. Up in Nullagine a few weeks back if you wanted unleaded you could only get it from the garage late afternoon when it cooled down. The super fuel must have pumped much easier otherwise there would have been lots of Landys stuck in the Sahara.

You don't have an air leak in the line somewhere?

I remember reading in some of Len Beadel's books that he would often face problems with fuel vaporising in the lines while surveying some of the central roads in the 50's and 60's(?). He would solve by taking several mouthfuls of water and spitting it out as a stream directed onto the fuel lines. This would happen to him frequently. So how about testing if the same resolves your issue and if it does the simply rig up a windscreen washer bottle and motor to direct water onto the fuel pump and lines?
Otherwise maybe a Dakar trick of wrapping all the lines in insulation foil or the other of blowing into the breather pipe to pressurise the fuel tank. (I think the latter is to stop fuel actually boiling in the tank, so maybe not applicable for your issue).

I ripped up some old towel, then wrapped the strips around the fuel line and kept them wet.
That worked well until I got time to fix the bonnet hinges with a sledge hammer to straighten them out.
By doing that, created a bigger gap between the mudguard and the bonnet to let the hot air out.

The Landrover Mob did a trip to Landor Races a few weeks back and all of them experienced fuel vaporisation problems same as what I had Sunday and again today briefly. Old mate Graeme has now insulated his lines on the 48 with soft foam tube. I will look at putting another pump same as the transfer pump I used in the long range tank fitment close to the bottom of the main tank. My current transfer pump refills my main tank from the top similar to what Jaybo and I fitted to our new 90's. We pulled apart the Fairey o/drive today and its a mess needs new lay gear and output gear axs well as all the bearings. I got ripped off a bit with that one on Ebay but when finished it will have cost me around $1400. I got most of the bearings here in Perth and the rest is coming from Craddocks all $380 ponds worth:o. Still when done it will be good as new. My head gasket and bits have arrived once iu pull the head off I will see if it needs new valves ,guides and seats or just a clean up and reseat.
New 80 channel radio fitted to the Defender as well today very busy.

There is a lot to see on the way over here Landrover wise, there is a little town in SA quite famous for its Series 1's probably more there in one town than anywhere else in Australia. I should introduce you to everyone here as you never know when you may need a local to help out on the way across.

I am going to do the same with a pump on mine Mike - if you take the valves out of the SU, it can pump through it without ruining the look of it.

From what I hear of the Fairey, it needs more oil than it can currently take - what about making an auxiliary oil tank for it, or a bigger sump?

Cheers Charlie

Yes Charlie I am looking at adding an external reservoir & oil cooler for the O/D and putting in an a electrical oil scavenge pump with a switch on the gear stick to circulate the oil. With the SU you can pump through it when required so only need to use the booster on hot days or if the SU dies.

Good Karma must be shining on me . Today coming back from Port Beach in Borumbah we came across a rather weathered Series 2 we pulled over for a chat. My new mate got me to follow him home and I was presented with a Fairey overdrive and a pair of very old Bosh spot lights (tear drop type as seen on Series 1's) now surplus to his requirements. My mate has had his Series 2 for over 30 years it was his first car. He tells me that back home in NSW his family are still using 2 Full Grill early Series 1's as everyday farm vehicles and that is where he learnt to work on them. I also came across a nice 107 ute in Bicton on Saturday with Qld plates but looking a bit neglected cobwebs growing over it. I doubt if its currently running but looked to be an easy fix up. :)

Now done 6000 miles since she left Keith's place 6 months ago. Hi Dennis and Mike

There are so many Capstan's about that have been removed but are now without their kit.

Could we make a collection of detailed drawings of those parts as they come to light and then have them collated onto a DVD, that then could be handled by Dave to be sold at a nominal sum to cover costs.

Another DVD that would be handy to anyone making up restoration parts, is the DVD containing plans of all the body panel pressings, I believe that DVD exists already as a copy of the blueprints was taken back from Sydney back to the UK.

Just a thought.

That's why I posed the question to him, it's useless without the mounts that hold the carrier, dog clutch etc. When I bought my Capstan years ago it had no mounts nor dog clutch etc, I had to fabricate the lot, it's do-able but difficult, well it was for me a Reg/nse ;) anyway here's hoping he has all the bits, cheers Dennis:angel:

I don't pick it up until 21st December when I get to Brisvegas. The photo shows the shaft and spring and the plate mount. Its a MAP so earlier than Fairey so me thinks should be correct for Series 1. The Dogs are available on ebay and the brackets . I have no dowels in the chassis on the 109 so they will have to be drilled and welded in. I will have a good look at Keiths when I drop in although his Jumbuck has a Disco diesel with a Capstan on the front. I am having a look at Ians ( Back in) 48/49 and his 57 when I pass through Adelaide and will check out if I need any more bits.
Still cant get hold of a lay gear part RTC 7192 for the Fairey overdrive. I am looking into getting them made here in Perth. I ran the idea past Craddocks and they are keen to get some made up as well. I have a very good gear cutter close by and he has the correct hobb for the cutter already. If anyone else is interested in rebuilding an Overdrive you will need one of these , easier to get it through me on this run than buy it through Craddocks after I send them over to the UK.

For those that are not sure, get hold of the series 2 parts manual and that manual does show the two types of kit, are they also shown in reasonable detail, from those drawing's you can find what is correct for the front of the engine that is fitted in your vehicle.

Keep your eye's open for any extra series one fittings they are really scarce and let us know on here if some show up.

I have seen tubes welded in the positions for the Capstan mount plate holes and I can't see why by doing that and then using longer bolts should be a problem?

Using Rivnuts would be the most practical way though.

I swaped this winch for a 48 grill & some labour on a guys 48 firewall about 10 years ago, its taken me about 10 years to find all the bits betweem the motor & winch. The engine brackets are a copy of ones Russelrover had ( thanks Jim) , the winch mounting I made up from an origional the guy i got it off had & the roller brackets I fabricated out of steel using a origional alum one as a pattern & then had them galvanised , then wiped them with week acid to make them look like alum. Got it working late last year . Looks like i,ve got a water leak , probely the rotten after market water pump I fitted last year , had to grind all the bottom of the pump to clear the timing cover & drill all the holes over size so the bolt holes would line up , or may be heater tap needs a new packing .

Good on you Mike for going to the trouble to get the shafts made! :D

Keep your eye's open for any extra series one fittings they are really scarce and let us know on here if some show up.

Years ago Diana had some parts made for people who owned winches; I made the aluminium casting shown in one of 1950landy's photos for her.

At Wayne's request I made some patterns for the aluminium parts that support the fairlead-roller - incidentally an excellent job done by 1950landy on his steel copies - unfortunately when I cast them there was too much porosity in the metal The solution is to make a new furnace so that I can use my graphite crucible, but too many other jobs got in the way.

Anyway; be aware that I can make castings if someone is desperate for them, but I will need to clear an immobile S3 out of the foundry before I can do that,

Cheers Charlie
