I just have this email and would like to know if it is true:
Quote:
.............Got a call last night from an individual identifying himself as an Telstra Service technician who was conducting a test on our Telephone lines.
He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9),zero ( 0), hash (#) and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.
Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which allows them to place long distance telephone calls billed to your home phone number.
I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many of the local Jails/prisons.
DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. PLEASE pass this on to your friends.
If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass this on.

Detective Senior Constable 29748

Level 12, 412 St. Kilda Road , Melbourne

Why don't you give DSC Stephen Cooper a call and find out?

Oh, and Telstras take on it.

Total hoax. As evidenced directly from Telstra's website: About Telstra - Consumer Advice - Mobile - Hoaxes (http://www.telstra.com.au/abouttelstra/advice/mobile/hoaxes/)

Because I do not like to waste the time of a police officer who will be glued to the phone ;)

I was a Telstra tech for 30 years, due to increasing BS from above / too much paperwork in a alleged paperless world and infinite automated record keeping of every action (and inaction) you make, I left (plus I got a good redundancy package)

there is no need at all for any telstra person to call your number for any testing purposes at all, they don't even need to test your line unless you complain of a fault, and still they wont call you , unless its to say "Im on my way make sure your home" that said a robot does make routine tests on random lines, not for fault finding purposes but for line quality auditing, but the testing does not involve ringing your number.

From Hoax-slayer

The emails are signed with the name of Stephen Cooper, a detective senior constable at the St Kilda Road police complex, and give his phone number and email address there. Mr Cooper's telephone is now on voicemail, with a message advising people to delete the email and ignore the hoax.

You do realise that this email was forwarded to the sweet 80 Y.O. lady by a friend of hers!

These sort of emails bounce around the globe amassing valid email addresses and eventually get picked up by a spammer and bingo, your on their spam list  This is one of the ways your 80YO friend will start to receive emails from a Nigerian Prince who wants help getting a few million in cash out of he country :nazilock:

Please folks, if you really feel the need to share any of these sort of warning/sympathy/cute emails with your friends, strip the previous email addresses out of the email header and send it Bcc. This way at least your email won't potentially end up with the spammer and your inbox full of ways to make your manhood :censored:

I had a call from some one the other night stating that as a result of the survey I participated in (I didn't) I had been selected to have my tax reduced by 50%, all I needed to do was supply my name, address, and tax file number.

"Do you think I'm ****ing stupid" I thought was an appropriate response.

My email address seems to have suddenly become target practice for spammers, I'm getting everything from discount viagra to mexican medical services to cheap winches!
Oh, wait that last one was from Tigerz

Personally I enjoy trolling the bejeezus out of telemarketers.
