The Barossa Express!!!

Hello all. Just thought this might interest you. Not quite the ore trains I was seeing in the Pilbara, but one I see daily none the less. It runs from Angaston in the Barossa Valley through to Outer Harbour just north of Adelaide. (I believe, if anyone knows more please speak up!). He passes our work sometime between 12:00 and 13:00 headed south, (and has in the past had several blasts from my K5LA and replied!:D), and returns through here at approx 06:00 the following morning. There are two of these orange loco's and a different styled green one (the exhaust on this is often glowing cherry red!!)... Enjoy!

Penrice Stone Train - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia


The Penrice Stone Train is a freight train in South Australia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Australia) that operates from Penrice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penrice,_South_Australia) in the Barossa Valley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barossa_Valley) to Osborne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne,_South_Australia) in Adelaide's north-western suburbs. It is currently operated by Genesee and Wyoming Australia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genesee_and_Wyoming_Australia), on behalf of Penrice Soda Holdings Limited.
The train ferries limestone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limestone) every day, from the Penrice Quarry near Angaston (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angaston,_South_Australia) in the Barossa Valley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barossa_Valley) to the Penrice soda ash (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_carbonate) plant at Osborne on the Lefevre Peninsula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lefevre_Peninsula), and the co-located Readymix concrete batching plant [1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penrice_Stone_Train#cite_note-1) This train has operated since November 1950 under different operators and locomotives.
The 'Stonie' is currently the only surviving broad gauge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broad_Gauge) freight service in South Australia as of November 2012. Locomotives used for this service are limited to 700 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Australian_Railways_700_class_%28diesel%29) & 830 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Australian_Railways_830_class) classes, with the usual locomotive lash-up being (first loco leading towards Osborne) 700-830 or 3x 830, but on rare occasions the loco consist has been 830-700-830.
