As of the 01-07-2013 there will be a zero tolerance on speeding in Queensland; 111 kph in a 110 zone and you're gone. Chances are it won't be a cop busting you, in the second half of this year private contractors will be operating speed camera cars and hand held radar devices. The wann-a-be cops who can't make it are going to have a ball.

They're lowering the tolerance, but I didn't think they were telling anyone what it will be? I had it on reliable advice that the current tolerance is 6km over.

I say that is ridiculous.
So, ya're out in the middle of the sticks, miles from anywhere, & ya're 1k over & ya're gone?....How stupid is that.....now, someone tell me that ain't revenue raising?
Cheers, Pickles.

I can see a class action happening here. It will be a Lawyers picnic. I'm sure someone will test this legislation and question how accurate both the equipment and the operators are. They are going to need new radars, cameras, etc as the current equipment is rated at + or - 1% which throws out any of those stupid 1 k over style of offences.
I would like to see them try keeping a 0% machine correctly calibrated...
What a joke...

Campbell Newman stated some months back that he intended to raise revenue, from speeding offences, from $30,000,000 to $80,000,000 (rubbery). I was surprised, at the time, that nobody jumped at the fact that fines have always been about safety, not a money grab.

I will be watching this new speeding set up with interest,as all of my land rovers have cable driven speedo's and those type of speedo's are known to have an error factor of 10%, as are all speedos of that type, so therefore it would/could be out 10kph either way at 100 kph, so it looks like the Garmin will be going from vehicle to vehicle,or I will be buying a second Garmin, but getting a LWB 2a to 100+would be a feat without an O/drive.

I know I'm going to draw fire here, but remember - it's a speed limit, not a target.
Sure, everyone is going to get into a lather about it being revenue raising, but this has come about because everyone seems to think 100km/h is some sort of advisory that they should, by right, travel 3-5km/h faster than. What would people say if they just said we'll raise the speed limit up to 103km/h with zero tolerance?
The police admit there is still a margin of error, but of course they won't publish this information or everyone will just make that the de facto new speed limit. Just drive within the limit and you'll be fine. Remember, at 105km/h over 200km you're only getting there 6 minutes earlier.
If you really, really want that extra 6 minutes, then check your speed via GPS. Just about all vehicles under read at 100km/h so you can scrape an extra few kph if you must without risking a fine. But you're still only travelling at the limit so it's just a psychological advantage.
Besides, this is a Land Rover forum so what are we even talking about travelling fast for anyway?

they'll be getting more people at 41kph around schools, 51kph on side streets and at 61kph around town than 101 on highways i bet...

It is the lower speed limits where those extra few kms/h make the difference.
I am all for getting people to stop speeding as australians are ridiculous drivers when it comes to a speed limit.
Solmanic you were spot on when saying it is a limit, not a target.
When on trips where I leave my town I have the Tomtom on just as a reminder.
I do however think 1-3km/h is a bit touchy just because of the variances in radars and vehicles speedos(but really that should not be an excuse).

Having a GPS with external antenna will be ok but I just wonder how much will cost in legal cost in proving that the equipment used by the police or contractors was wrong and the GPS was correct.
I remember when the first radars were installed in NSW one clue fellow defended and proved his innocence in court at a cost of $20000 back then to avoid a fine of about $150.oo and to prove his point.
As long as we have a legal system like this we do not have a hope or chance to win a case.

Doesn't Victoria already have this, or something similar, resulting in a lot of complaints?
Legally, the speedo always has to be higher than the actual speed, with a 10% variation allowed, although its usually less.
As has been said, I reckon more people will get caught out around schools and local streets, because people use cruise control on the highways.
One pet complaint of mine is the constant changes in the speed limit, which really just seem like a way of catching more people out so they can be fined.
Anyone who thought Campbell Newman would result in a less bureaucratic and motorist-unfriendly government must be regretting how they voted.
Queensland drivers will have less leeway around maximum speed limits under a new police crackdown.
Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said officers would be more ruthlessly applying the speed limit when doling out fines.
Speed tolerances will be lowered, meaning drivers will be fined for exceeding the limit by less.
But drivers should not expect police to disclose the new tolerance range.
Mr Stewart said that would only create a ‘‘de facto speed limit’’.
“The speed limit is the maximum. It is not a guide or a recommendation,’’ Mr Stewart said.
‘‘Changes to speed tolerances will be incremental over time, and will be guided by evidence such as the road toll and public compliance with the speed limits.’’
Speed margins have previously been set higher in Queensland to account for inaccuracies in the state's older camera system.
Last year, 59 people died on Queensland roads as the result of speed-related crashes.
The state’s road toll currently stands at 138 - 16 more than at the same time last year, 28 more than in 2011 and 30 more than in 2010.
Despite the crackdown, Mr Stewart said he hoped there would not be an increase in the number of speeding tickets issued across the state.
Speed camera locations will also be officially published for the first time under changes to come into effect from July 1.
The speed camera locations will be published from July 1 on the website www.police.qld.gov.au (http://www.police.qld.gov.au/).

Saw a real bright spark today on the Logan Motorway. He hid the candy car in a gully, well off the westbound road. He then crouched between a break in the armco two metres from the roadway, with his back to the 100 kph traffic, leaning against the steel barrier. He held this position, holding a hand-held speed camera for 4-6 hours. Luckily for him nobody stuffed up and hit the armco. Don't these fools have to comply with WH&S?

I recon they have done this so he can afford to pay the contractors.
Pretty difficult for people like me that drive around a lot, often going through many speed cameras each day:mad:
It also won't be long before they have facial recognition technology so they know exactly who is at the wheel when the picture is taken.
To do this the camera will have to be set up to take front on shots only.
This is the same Govt. that got rid of many govt. workers, and are now rehiring to replace them, and in Qld heath's case, using contract labour to replace the people that were sacked:confused:

They were also there yesterday on that same motorway in the 80(roadworks) section going west pulling a few over.
This morning they were not there, the trucks knew, as they were thundering through on their limiters at 105k's.

They've been working the roadworks there and Logan M'way to Logan River, in unmarked cars, all week.
Back on topic, all this zero tolerance revenue grab is going to do is make people study the speedo with an occasional glance at the road, instead of vice versa.

One of the options will be a GPS with an alarm set on the maximum speed for a particular road.
In that way people can concentrate on the stereo and mobile phone :D

I use my GPS for the speed alarm, but I don't completely trust it as the speed numbers in it are not always up to date. Seen too many incidences of roadworks starting, the speed limit being lowered, and the cops booking people and its not on the GPS.

Even in Vic (where I believe we have the lowest tolerances in the world) we are given an error factor of 2kmh. This DOES mean that you can be fined for doing say 111kmh in a 110 zone but they will have zapped you at 113km for that to happen. That's the Victorian story anyway:nazilock:

NSW or VIC were forced to refund several million in fines a while back as they were issuing fines below the camera manufacturer's tolerance (which I think was 2 km/h).
I doubt 1 km/h is possible with current technology. So the OP is incorrect as Scallops and others have pointed out.
However as also stated, it is a voluntary tax. I know a bloke in Brisbane who was sent a letter by QT congratulating him on his safe driving as he went 30 years without receiving a fine...

Asked it before but how can a state govt. introduce laws contrary to federal Laws that covered about half the cars ? ADR's before either 00 or 02 had an accuracy requirement of +or - 10% after that it was changed to only neg.
Another money grab with keystone cops hiding in bins at the base of hills. Wonder how many speed limits will be reduced to make easy targets?
I'm all for cameras and real cops around schools /suburbia during start and finish times but camping in 80 or 100 kph zones at the base of a hill or the change point from 110 to 80 does nothing for safety.
Nearly as bright as the plods who decided to breath test every car going north at heathcoat last year ,10am ish Saturday morning from memory, about 200m north of the change from 100 to 50. He did not appreciate being told he was going to kill someone as the cars where backed up to the 100kph zone to just below the crest of a rise!

I really **** some people off.
A large proportion of my fleet are V8s. The daily drive has a HSV motor. When licence renewal time comes around, I get a 10% reduction as I have all my points.
Most people think if you have a V8 you must be speeding all the time.
Yes, with zero tolerance and methods used in catching motorists exceeding the limit, traffic fines are now considered to be just voluntary indirect taxation.
Sad, really. It should be considered by the public to be a safety issue.
Stopping a driver exceeding the limit at the time of the offence and saying "You were speeding, now on your way." does more for road safety than sending someone a notice a month after the offence stating "You were observed driving at 50.5km/h in a 50km/h zone. Cop this one mate."
