Just went to get ice and the Deefa wont start. Not allowed to look as 27 coming for lunch and SHMBO said dont even think about it. Have to go to work tomorrow early so no time to look then either

Have power and all ingnition lights are a goer. 300tdi

So questions

1 Start at the ignition switch?
2 Start at the starter motor, has never given any trouble,
3 Starter solinoid?

Pulled the fuse I think it is for started, looks good.

Thanks all

check big fuses in engine bay near heater, check wire to injector pump and then cross terminals on starter motor with ignition on using a screw driver

Won't start ? Or won't wind over ?

By the description im with redrovertdi. I just replaced my starter six months ago or so due to the same thing but would come good every so often. In the end I was asking people at the servo to hold the key on start while I bash the solenoid  so new one it was.

Wont turn over, nothing from starter motor at all, just lights on dash for ignition.

Something as simple as a dirty or loose battery terminal connection will allow enough power through to illuminate dash lights, but not enough to make the starter even attempt to turn.

try the screwdriver accross the starter terminals with the key position on and see if it cranks and fires[it will/should crank still with key off]

Not that, just got back from a short run to shops and was off again, dead, only thing I looked at before I was forced into the Rav 4 and off to the shops again.

Yep, will be solenoid. Mine did that b4 I replaced starter motor. Sometimes no problemo, others just a click or nothing :o Sit turning ign on off for a while and presto! Much nicer with new s/motor though :)

Hi Tonic,
I'm not sure, do the Defender 300Tdi's have the "spider" anti theft unit that the Discovery D1's have? The symptoms sound very similar to the problem I have on my old Discovery, there is a bypass kit you can buy to take the "spider" out of the loop. Not sure if this is any help.

when I had similar issues, it turned out to be a faulty relay although I have no idea if its a standard fitment. Mine was located near the fuses under the dash

Mine has a relay at the fuse panel as well.
If replacing double check the relay pin numbers as there are 2 types of relays available and the pins are wired differently.
Wrong relay will melt the earth wire in the harness.

Thanks everyone

Based on the advise from the majority, while out and about today I bought a new test light.

Once home from work I put SHMBO in the drivers seat to twist the key. Yep, power at the starter on both sides, so solenoid.

Anyone got a new starter they do want:D

Mate, check for a decent earth off the starter motor, Steph's old 300tdi D1 did the same thing and all I did was run a new earth strap from the battery to the starter motor and never missed a beat after that.

Cheers Ian

Take off the small spade fitting on the solenoid and using a test light see if you get power at the spade on the wire this is the siginal from the key to pull the solenoid if you have power there then its the solenoid .
If no power then using another wire that is live with ignition off touch live wire on spade terminal on solenoid if it cranks you know solenoid and starter are good its the power coming from the ignition that has the problem so maby a relay or simple fuse .
