'Surreal' escape: How survivors fled badly damaged Asiana Flight 214 - U.S. News (http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/07/06/19324552-surreal-escape-how-survivors-fled-badly-damaged-asiana-flight-214?lite)

Amazing that all those people made it out alive, sad those 2 young girls didn't make it.
Pictures of the runway looks like the tail clipped the sea wall and that was the end of it. Other reports said it came down very steep, tail down. Will be interesting to see how and why this happened. More lessons to be learnt the hard way

Early suggestions are the plane hit the end of the runway...

any landing you walk away from is a good one.
any landing where the plane is reusable is a great one.

I think they've failed on both those counts, with 2 fatalities known so far.

And that airframe is a total loss.

Sounds like the cabin crew did a great job in the evacuation, I'm sure the casualty list would have been much longer otherwise.

yes indeed.
i also heard a member of the flight crew who survived was flung out of the plane and onto the ground.

The outcome could have been a lot worse had they hit that wall a few feet further up the body.
New 777 retails for about 300 million depending on which one you get, that's an expensive day in the office if you ignor the human cost

Here's an excellent set ob observations of the trajectory of the aircraft, well presented.

It doesn't explain why it happened though, but as a former instructor of Korean pilots, my money is on a stuffed up visual approach.

Agreeing with Stallie.
There always hindsight, yet the crew should probably have recognised a bad profile quite a few miles before the gear was left behind on the sea wall.

It seems one of the deceased was run over by a fire truck..

I am amazed at how well the 777 held together in the crash with the wings still on when it came to rest, and the fuselage basically intact. Although the video wasn't clear it also appears that most of the seats stayed in place.

It seems that the wing tanks did not catch fire , and the eventual fire was relatively minor compared to what is commonplace.

Compare that with the DC10 at Sioux City United 232 back in the 80s. a completely different result but probably going a lot faster.

big diff btwn 777 and DC10, with carbon fiber / polymer construction, I'd say that has a lot to do with how well it held together & minimal fire damage

Confirmed today the young lass was run over by the tender - very sad. I also feel for the Firies who would not have known until after the event.

Some more pics of the cleanup on attached pdf.
