Myself and my family are going to be in Melbourne after our trip through the snow.. Dont have a lot planned as yet although I believe SAT night is booked for a 40th. That makes sun morning a slow start :D
Have kids, boys 14 & 10 and daughter 7 with us..
Any suggestions?
we will be visiting the fairy penguins in Philip Island..
doing a trip to the museum
also going to a horrible histories stageshow ??!!
staying in packingham..(I think thats it) and trying not to break the (very meagre) bank!!!

Maybe Pakenham you're stopping at ?
If so, you can head out of Melbourne to Moe and there is a collection of old buildings, vehicles etc. called Old Gippstown. Went there a few weeks ago and the kids enjoyed it. It's a bit run down but some interesting stuff there (including a Stanley Steamer), restaurant was good & reasonably priced. Entry costs were reasonable.
Coal Creek is another similar setup in Korumburra. Old buildings re-located years ago but this is a bit more run down than Old Gippstown. This one is free.
If you're going to Philip Island there is a wildlife park just before you get to Cowes on the LHS. It's quite run down but you do get to feed kangaroos, wallabies etc. and reasonably priced.
There is also the Koala Park and Churchill Island. I think the homestead on Churchill Island is the oldest homestead in Victoria. It's well signed as you get onto Philip Island and there is a bridge over to Churchill.
If you are going to see the penguins it will be bloody cold, it might be worth checking how many penguins are coming in at night before paying $20 per head to sit on a cold beach in the dark......
If it's Pakenham and you have a free hour or so PM me and you can check out my small collection of Land Rovers (I'm a short drive away). I do have to collect another at some point this weekend but should be around.
Enjoy.

If you've got some time at Phillip Island, You could check out the Motor Racing Museum at the Circuit, but the best thing I've seen at Phillip Island is the Vietnam Vets Museum.....it is simply BRILLIANT....would have to be the VERY BEST in AUS.

Hey Digger,,
Good chance to meet a few of us locals :D.
When you get here, we should organise a "get together" and have a drink, and food even ;). Can do a restaurant/pub whatever.
We're off to Albury on Saturday, but will be back Sunday arvo, so could do Sunday (?) or Monday night.
Not far from where you'll be staying is Gumbuya Park too. Haven't been there myself, but understand its not too bad ;-
Gumbuya Park – Have a great day out! (http://www.gumbuya.com.au/)
You'll see a huge difference in the scenery down this way, and its certainly very beautiful in the Gippsland area. There are great views overlooking Western Port Bay (Phillip Is) from an area just above Kilcunda, but probably a bit hard to find, but the town is right on the coast road and also has good views of the ocean, not a bad pub either;-
Kilcunda Ocean View Hotel, KILCUNDA, VIC | Pub info @ Publocation (http://publocation.com.au/pubs/vic/kilcunda/kilcunda-ocean-view-hotel)

If you want something in Melbourne , try the eureka tower & sky deck, I haven't been up myself but I hear the views are awesome and the sky deck is 99% guaranteed to scare the crap out of your kids :D
Nearby are the aquarium and city circle tram so you can easily chew up a full day.

I've been watching and was going to offer to do a Sunday off road trip for your clan.
Being that your accommodation is @90mins away it may not work for you after the Saturday do.
However if your up for a drive Sunday we could do BBQ lunch followed by a run into Wombat.
I thought maybe a finish at one of our local pubs for dinner.
I'm sure a few on the west of Melb would join us.
It would make for a late night by the time you get back to your digs though.
If your interested I'm only a PM away.

Tell the now not so little rug rats that I'll walk them into the side of a hill.
I'll also let them taste some of the freshest spring water in Victoria;)
I was thinking of a quick run past some mineral springs, gold mine sites with a few medium low range tracks on the way.
Even doable in a Nissan if need be:p

Spent today at Sov Hill.. Great day. tonight had tea at
Sov Hill and then went to sound & light show called BLOOD ON THE
SOUTHERN CROSS.. I was dubious about this showbut I now
wholeheartedly recommend it to all. Very well done!

I have been to Sovereign Hill which I thought was good, especially if you have kids. Have never got around to doing "Blood On The Southern Cross" though.
I have heard it is a very good show and it is good to see that you enjoyed it.
