Hi Disco experts...help needed once again.

After a big day trip on Saturday, I started the Disco on Sunday only to notice the Battery shaped red light on the dash.

So as I figured, I checked the batter and sure enough it was very low in charge and not seemingly holding charge.

I tottled down to battery world and put a new battery in.

Dash light went away.

Then on the way home it came up, went away and then came up again with the new battery in.

So to assume I would think it is the Alternator not sending enough charge, Any insight from Disco owners would be greatly appreciated
Would it be water causing an issue, is this common?

Water itself shouldn't be a problem but mud would be. Hosing out the alternator (not while its running though) may overcome the problem if the brushes aren't badly worn from mud/dirt. Alternatively one or more diodes or the regulator may have been cooked.

Great thanks,

I'll get at it this afternoon with the pressure washer and see how it goes.
It is not making any bearing or brush noises when running under load..yet

Cheers,
Ben

Same issue for me awhile ago and have posted about it.

D3 issue only.

Light comes on intermittently as alternator diodes fail then they short out and it costs you an Alternator and a Battery.

Highly recommend you don't risk your battery and get the Alternator checked out A$AP.

Will do mate, thanks for the info.

How much did a new alternator set you back if you don't mind me asking?

My alternator was around the $500 mark. Basically started her up after a long trip, burnt smell, whirring noise that changes with engine speed, battery light on.

Checked charge with alternator ~11.5v.

Was enough to start the car and drive the next day ~20km. Died soon after, started with numerous bongs, then Christmas tree lights, then trans started slamming into gears.

If this happens to you and you expect to load the car onto a ramp, etc, try not to put it in PARK, as it will then lock you in park and you won't be going anywhere. I think garrycol had some advice to get it back out again which involved removing part of the centre console.

If you're after a good Auto Electrician I recommend Henshaw Auto Electrical in Brookvale - Peter is very good, and does a lot of work for various dealers.

Battery is one day old, havnt driven the car. Doors won't open, so manually opened the car and have disconnect the battery.

No idea what the issue is now, all I know is the battery signal didn't disappear.

Will having the battery disconnected cause any issues? Other than trip and clock.

ill order a new alternator replace that and see how we go.

They did say mine was the last one in stock. So when they restocked the price must have increased.

If you can wait they are on Ebay for the same price shipped from the UK.

Land Rover Discovery 3 OR Range Rover Sport 2 7 TDV6 Alternator | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Land-Rover-Discovery-3-or-Range-Rover-Sport-2-7-TDV6-Alternator-/280977905048?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item416b969598&_uhb=1)

I was quoted $900 - $1000 to replace originally and the parts people I spoke to wanted $700 just for the alternator.

At least you have a red light ! I had nothing as posted in the link below, to continue on that experience all seems well now the battery is performing well and holding charge.

As I said in the link I had my alternator replaced in Brisbane for $700 fitted, don't have the paperwork here but I think it came from Karcraft.

Well my understanding, if the battery light is flashing then it is a charge issue, yet if it is just on then it is battery issue. I found out the hard way that si not in fact the truth. If that red light goes on in any way what so ever replace battery and alternator...

You got a good price, the alternator itself is 600 delivered so they did the install for 100 bucks, looks like they did the whole job in under an hour which is good.

My install is a sat morning job.

Thanks,
Ben

Alternator installed. Took about an hour, pretty trouble free job to be honest. Main pain is the fan, but easy enough to get it worked out.

Also did the GOE rods while I was at it, got them around the wrong way in the front it looks like..
