Hi

I don't know about anyone else, but with the increasing number of people fabricating stuff for our beast but I am having trouble keeping up with the options for things like winch bars, rear bars, rock sliders, snorkels etc

I was thinking that collecting these in one place would be a good idea, one option would be to have a sticky which links to the manufacturers site.

That way member can quickly see what stuff is available in OZ for the P38.

Of course this can only happen if the members and mods are happy, but it seems to work well on the rr.net forums.

Steve

PS: I note we are now neck and neck with the classic forum for activity :D

Great idea mate! Maybe have admin only to control updates on it too to prevent chit-chat clogging up the good info?!?

I like this idea.

Yeh I hear ya Keith re admins and filtering. Otherwise it all ends up buried and 99 pages with the same question and chatting going on.

HI

Yes the issue is the moderation, I agree that the thread would need to be locked and able to be updated by admins only.

Perhaps a simpler solution is for me to hack up a web page and list the stuff there?

Thanks for that.

My idea is to let this thread run until I am sure i have got all the options, then I can make a new thread and ask the mod to make it a sticky

Steve

Copied from the official update thread. Just didn't want to fill that thread with my chitter chatter.

Sounds good to me. Any ideas how you will keep it up to date after the list has been closed? I guess PM's or emails or a form or something on your website.

I guess a wiki style thing is a fair effort or can get to messy with everyone editing it?

I'm more than happy with your thoughts and efforts, but just throwing ideas out there..

HI Mate

I like the wiki idea if things get bigger ;-)

I went for the website idea because I already had a couple of simple pages and it was easy to add a section at the top

Great idea, I was just about to look for the post on spotlights. If we had this page it would cut down so much searching time

As an active member on another car marque site I find it frustrating that this forum does not have the same level of stickies at the top of the page grouped in easy to follow sections. This obviously takes a far bit of effort from the Mods to start with but once organised I presume its easier just to keep them updated. It makes life easy for both new and old hands to find info and stops the same questions being asked over and over
See the other site to see how well stickies can be managed

wayne we have tried that - see "the good oil" under technical forums.

The problem is that a lot of the info tends to get outdated, links broken etc etc

and it is a VERY high workload for the mods to keep up with what is, in reality, a not much utilised resource.

The best option is to try the google search aulro function at the bottom LHS of the forum pages. This should make it easy enough to find relevant topics before posting another one.

Cheers

Never noticed the google search down there - thanks for the tip.

Hi Vlad,

I agree trying to keep stickies updated is a huge task on a forum of this size.

So in the end a made a simple page which lists the companies who fabricate for the P38 in OZ. I am not attempting to collate any other information.

The google search is great but if you search for something as generic as "bullbar" then the number of hits you get and the fact it searches all forums means it is not so easy to find some P38 specific stuff amongst the massive amount of info on these forums.

The mods on here do an great job and I am sure they have lives to lead, and Land Rovers to drive, as well as being moderators :D

Regards
Steve

Cool. While the google search is usually best at finding info, if you want to narrow things down click on the search bar in the top menu bar, then advanced search - and you can tell it which specific forums you want to look in.

Maybe even an online google spreadsheet might work that anyone can update?

Here's a very rough start that should be editable with no log in required.

As I said, I'm more than happy with what Steve has done so happy to stick with the website idea as it looks good. Google spreadsheet may make thing difficult and more chaotic.

Just throwing ideas around that's all.

How about a wiki?

Why not start a P38a google circle/forum? It wouldn't take long to sift the you know what from the clay... AULRO could do with some competition!!! :wasntme::angel::eek:

Hi

My intention was never to compete with aulro.

After all we also have the fantastic resource at rr.net which does have a bunch of technical stickies at the top of the forum, I note that those stickies have very few external links though.

Plus there are at least 20 other Land Rover forums with Rangie sections.

My intention was to enable P38 owners to quickly find if anyone in OZ fabricates what they are looking for.

A google spreadsheet is great, again as long as it is kept up to date

Hi,

The google spreadsheet looks great, keeping it up to date may be a challenge though :p

I can't think of any way that is guaranteed not to get out of date though.

I'd like to think that anyone who is on this forum would make a little effort and update any changes to the list if they find missing info or changes.

My biggest concern would be the list getting messy with so many people editing it. Thankfully I think that changes can be reversed if someone mucks it up a little..

The open access makes it more of a live document, but can also mean things aren't kept as tidy.

I guess a wiki would work similar but ordering them into who makes a front bar, or sill protectors etc wouldn't be as easy. Also assume it's a little more work.. Although I think things can be reviewed easier so things are a little controlled on what goes into the wiki??? Never made a wiki so unsure.

I'm easy on how this is done, but do agree a list of suppliers would be handy for people venturing into taking their P38 off road in Oz.

The gDocs spreadsheet is very similar to a wiki if everyone has privileges. I think it is a good idea.

I agree the google docs should work well as long as it's updated and if we can get a few people committed to keeping Google docs updated then it should work well

It's true.

Google doc = Simple for a few people to use. Not very scalable.
Wiki = More complex, but very scalable.

Both serve the purpose of displaying a "live" document that anyone can update. Of course a wiki also keeps a history of changes, etc as well - but that all adds to complexity.
