Dearest Landrover Brains trust,
Was doing a gearbox oil change today. When I noticed there was no oil in the box!!!!!!!!!! Went to fill and it poured out of a hole Possible crack in the housing. See Photo attached. Can I weld it up and see how it goes?
Thanks
Paul

Going by your photos, I think perhaps you were trying to drain oil out of the bell housing (which shouldn't have oil in it) and filling the same. The plugs shown in the photos are wading plugs. The gearbox drain and fill points are much further back along the gearbox.
Do you have a RAVE disc or other workshop manual?

they are indeed the blanking plugs for the bell housing.
the drain for the gearbox is further back. on the right hand side

So long as it didn't go anywhere near the clutch plate...

At least you know there's a good chance the gearbox is alright.

I'm guessing, but others may respond with a big NO, that you can spray brake cleaner or contact cleaner in there but there may be a bearing that you have to be careful not to dry out with the spray. Hopefully you don't have to pull it apart to clean it.
Fingers crossed someone has a solution.

Hi there Paul,
Can't say I've made the same mistake. This one's going to stick with you for a while.
Just sit back, have a beer and have a chuckle with the rest of us.
Cheers, Jurgens.

Not all bad news, I reckon the old DMF could do with a bit of lube at times :D
in the old series landys with Holden 6 leaky rear mains I used to ride the clutch in 4th to burn the oil off,

there are a lot more embarrasing mistakes to make, some of them can be quite costly.....
someone trying to grease the nipples on a brake caliper
"filling" the engine with oil. to the top of the rocker cover.
checking the water... in the washer bottle then running the engine dry of coolant
rotating the tyres... by jacking up the vehicle removing a wheel and then trying to bolt it back on turned around (as in outside of rim facing inwards)
Checking the diff level... with a bubble level.
And I just wish I was kidding about all of them....
