We have a 2012 Defender 90, took it out on the beach, heard a crunch in the gear box and lost drive! The gear box does now not engage front or rear difs. Has anyone had any similar issues?

do you understand that the high and low range has a neutral half way between,
sounds like it wasn't put fully back into high after a jaunt on the beach and has popped into neutral :o, just pull the short stick back & see if that fixes it.

Tried high, low and centre dif lock...gear box still not engaging...4 hr recovery by tractor...vehicle now on its way to Landrover (vehicle was in high range, second gear). Could not get any centre dif engagement just crunching!! $500 tractor recovery which Landrover is saying they will not pay for 4WD recovery...vehicle has less than 20000km.

Sounds expensive then, at least it wasn't one of those unfortunate enough to have the tide come in, hope its covered under warranty, keep us posted

It will be the Getrag MT-82 with an LT230 behind,
The troublesome Mustang ones are made in China,
not sure where the LR boxes are made.

Landrover have informed me that the spline from the transfere box to gear box had the gear cogs had been stripped never seen before but I think that part is not made by landy anymore , but have been advised to fight to have the box replaced and just not repaired which sounds lick a job bigger than Ben her, landrover warranty will only replace what is broken, lets hope they get all the metal shavings out cheers Shane

It's a 2012 model,it should have another 2 years warranty so all the costs are covered, they won't fix it,it will be a change out. Pat

Pat have been told that they are replacing parts, I've asked to replace the box as my advise is the box will now have a shorter life due maybe bearing damage but landrover Albany are guaranteeing there workmanship fingers. Crossed , as soon as we get the car back our journey around aus can start

We have had the same spline strip out on a 30,000km old puma over here.....so it DOES happen AND it was covered under warranty.

is it in the Tcase or the gearbox?

There is a shaft with internal fine splines that fits over the MT82 output shaft, and has a coarse spline input into the LT230, same as the ZF auto to LT230 spud shaft of old Serge. Must be a materials issue as the shafts are all pretty well up to the task dimensionally IMO. The one we saw stripped out the internal splines, the MT82 trans output shaft was unharmed.
