I have a d3 se 2005 with just on 100000kms on the clock and its developed a whine until it reaches a cruising/ momentum speed, and I am trying to work out whether it could be the trans or maybe the turbo? Happens when driving normally, and don't know where the turbo hoses are. Can anyone help me diagnose before I drop $1000 on the flush and pan replacement?
Thanks

Does it vary with engine speed ?
Mine has a pronounced whine now, but stops if the A/C is turned off, it is in the compressor, has had it now for about 6-7K. Does not seem to be getting worse.

When using the accelerator it is there, but not when coasting. It does change a little with gear changes... Was thinking it may be the torque converter or something?

I would be checking-out the I/C hoses as there may be a small split.

How do I get to this?

Would the hose you think I should look at be listed here?
Any advice would be great! Thanks in advance.

I will take a photo and post it tomorrow morning if you like. Are you getting black smoke (or more than usual) under load?

It's hard to say tbh. I had noticed more black smoke but have rarely driven in the last 6 months because I thought it may be trans and got a work car and haven't had the money to do the flush, but last night when driving it and listening intently I didn't feel it was the trans and began thinking it may be a hose or something.
A pic would be greatly appreciated rocmic! ;) thanks
Might be a novice on mechanics but I learn when needed - replaced the air compressor to the amk one myself. ;) bit chuffed by that so a hose should be easy! ??? Haha

Adzee,
This is the hose that blew on me. I had a split in the hose on the underside just at the top. It runs from the intercooler up to the top of the engine just behind the radiator on the driver's side. It is the hose that is shown on the bottom middle of the parts drawing you posted up. I couldn't get a good angle to show the other IC hose - sorry.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Had my intercooler hose changed last service, 145,000km 2006 tdv6. Preventative measure as it was getting a bit "hard", before going to Fraser, cost approx $300 fitted I think.

Thanks Mike, I'll be investigating it more when the weather is better. Seems like its a more logical problem than the trans. :D cheers!

The top hose splitting underneath seems to be a common problem as the hoses get older.

adzee - if you do find a split or other damage to the intercooler hose, a suggestion: replace it with a silicone hose. Like this one:

Good luck with the fix, I have a similar whine in my D3, I am assuming it is not the same issue as I have no extra black smoke, fuel consumption or boost/power loss.
It is a high pitched whine, and it comes and goes with acceleration, pretty much from boost rpm's upwards to where the boost curve flattens.
The issue is turbo related:
It seems to be either slight damage with the veins in the compressor housing or it could be a sticking waste-gate actuator.
I will also check my I/C hoses, but pretty sure they are ok as I did check them briefly on Saturday during the alternator install.

Thanks all for your help in potential symptoms.
The noise I have been hearing apparently isn't the hose... I couldn't see any damage/holes or splits and so took it to a local land rover specialist.
They took it for a spin and think it may be an idle or belt tensioner. So it's booked in for Thursday. Hoping its that.
Apparently I am a bit sensitive to it, and there was no visible smoke so it pretty much ruled out the hose.
Will keep you all posted, and if I intend on keeping the vehicle I may end up replacing the hose.
Cheers

it could be a sticking waste-gate actuator. No wastegate on these turbos.

Ah oh dear, then my whine is a worn turbo bearing or compressor wheel?..:censored:

Might want to research this possible problem: - I was thinking it was waste-gate, but they are non gated turbos, diesel style.
-The arm for the variable vein actuator on the turbo. These can get rusty and stick open, also a build up of carbon can cause the issue. The issue is boost comes on pretty hard around 2000rpm and you getting a pretty decent whine from passenger side front throughout the boost curve

Looks like this is the issue with mine :(

Ok so I got mine back today and it was the idle tensioner, had it replaced and checked over, along with a few other assessments and all is good, $380.
Glad it wasn't the trans, and at least I know about the turbo hose. ;)
Now for the next couple of things to sort.., tax back better be good! Haha

Adzee, can you tell me which meachanical workshop did the work on your car?
Looking for options as not entirely happy with the Landrover "specialist" currently looking after mine.
Thanks

In the interest of forum rules and fairness I was going to PM you buy can't....
What is the issues you're experiencing?
I always find that I am
Treated poorly at dealers cause I'm young, and wear thongs and not a suit. It's so disappointing because it makes me never want to go to a dealer so in the future I won't buy new.
I think knowledge is power, education is a must and don't just leave it with them, ask the questions you think are dumb but want to know, ask for parts that were removed, get explanations and if they aren't interested then that's enough info for me to decide they won't be up front and honest.
