Hi all,
I have bought this disco a couple of months ago and I have been experiencing this intermittent loss of power issue. It can go weeks between it happening. Sometimes the engine dies sometimes i can save it by flooring the accelerator, sometimes I get the engine light on sometimes not?
Today I lost power and pulled over, and the engine died, I put the car in drive and without turning the ignition off there was this ticking noise? (on video) whats the noise?
Wierd engine noise Discovery V8 - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAioTbk2IZw&feature=youtu.be)
Please ignore the random footage, I was trying to increase the sound sensitivity.
After turning the engine off, the car then wouldnt start, It would turn over but not start? I dont think the plugs were firing? after 10 minutes and me holding the accelerator down it finally started and then drove home like nothing went wrong?
It has been suggested to me that it could be a problem with the ignition module, or coil?
Im sorry I have no knowledge of these engines or there electrical systems.
I have a new ignition module and I picked up an old distributor of a wreck the other day so I have all that.
If someone could walk me through what could be going wrong it would be great. This is really starting to become a problem as I sometimes travel away from town.

Check and clean connections to ignition module, maf, tps, and o2's if you have them. as to the ticking sounds, have you changed your fuel filter? get ur fuel system pressure tested, might not have any pressure (like the pumps buggered)

oh and exhaust manifolds can leak, (and suck in clean air) tripping off the o2's, when they leak they tick, you will notice it ticks way louder under throttle, in my experience.

Ignition modules can do strange things on these things, as can dirty or loose connections around the ignition coil. I lose count of the number of modules I have upgraded, must be nearing 100 by now. The positive and negative coil connections are often loose and can be corrected by carefully squashing the female connectors until they get a good grip on the mating part. Sometimes I cut off the OEM positive wire terminal and crimp on a new (fully insulated) one after cutting the wire back to clean copper. Did one just yesterday to a forum members RRC.

Bonnet slams shut, video ends.

Did you replace the ignition module as was suggested early in the discussion on this vehicle??

Hi Garry Im yet to do that, as I had to wait nearly 3 weeks for repco to get the right one in.
Im just more worried about what the noise is?>

I think (well I guess hopefully) your engine problems will be fixed when you get the module - not sure why you ordered through Repco though as they are not what they are used to be - as you are in Armidale I would have rung All Four x4 in Kotara and they would have one to you the next day or so.
As to the noise - not sure - my TDV6 make similar noises but it is supposed to do it - various solenoids.
My two D1 V8s never made that noise - it sounds like electrical spark to me - possibly in the alternator but could be HT spark - try running you car in a dark garage at night with no lights on and see if you can see any blue sparks anywhere. That is about all I can offer on the noise issue.
Cheers
Garry

Thanks Garry,
I will never use repco again, it was all overnight deliveries with about 12 mistakes! but I had some fault there to.
The problem with this problem is that there is so long between it happening. I cant reproduce it in the shed cause it just wont happen! same as for taking it to a mechanic they would have to drive it for a week to experience the problem.
Lets hope this will fix it.

That is typical ignition module symptoms.

The weird noise could be the cannister purge going nuts

It lives on the RH side of the engine bay

what does it do?

Its a solenoid valve on the carbon cannister, the carbon cannister traps fuel vapor from the fuel tank. When the engine is running the solenoid valve opens allowing engine vacuum to suck out the fuel vapours.

Thanks Boony, does that explain why it wouldnt start straight away?

Possiably I think mine starts to work after the engine reaches operating temp but even when warm mine has a delay before coming on
