View Full Version : I broke the 90

Well after a great 3 weeks up the cape with nothing more than rubbing wheel arches with the 33's and some bush pinstripes I managed to cartwheel the 90.

We had just finished the old coach road from Laura to Maytown which was the best days driving of the whole trip and were heading home along 70ks of the best dirt roads of the entire trip when after around 65ks I managed to come over a hill and skid on some very loose gravel.

The drivers side hit a ditch making the dents you see in the photo, it proceeded to roll over on the bull bar and swinging 90 degrees in the process landing me on the passenger side.

I climbed out the back door and waited for my mate to arrive and we promptly put the rubber side down again and changed the back tyre as it must have hit something pretty hard as the rim was all dented and off the bead

Right or wrong we got it driving again and took it home the remaining 45ks as I wasn't leaving it at the side off the road to get molested by passers by.

It got towed to Cooktown and I am now waiting on the assessors report as to what happens next.

I am home again but will have to drive back up in the D3 to pick up the trailer as we left it up in Lakeland

Depending on how straight the top is,there is a good chance that it is a write off,it doesn't take much damage for them to want to write Land Rovers off:(

The roof is badly damaged on both sides as is the wings and bonnet. The sides were not bad but it is still a lot of panels the need to be replaced

Wow, glad you got out safely Garry. Shame, it was such a nice 90 too:(.

Same thing happened to a Cruiser on the trip we did up there, loose gravel on a corner then hit the ditch and rolled on it's side. Things like that happen so fast.

Cheers,

Tim.

I'll open the bidding at $67.90 :)

Glad you're all ok, scary sometimes how easy these things can go wrong.
Hopefully its not too much hassle getting it all sorted out.

I reckon if I cut the roof off, copy the front end styling on Pete's 90, add some bar work and a set of 35's it will make a great weekender

You're either lucky or skillful to get out of that Garry! Best buy a lotto ticket. Shame about the 90 though...

I might just go and buy one of them Powerball's then.

I have no marks from that crash at all, I did crack my head on the B pillar a few times when driving the coach road that hurt more the rolling the 90 :o

I do believe it was luck though

Very sad that you had to experience that, but great news that you came out of it without injury! I hope the insurance process isn't too much hassle!

The damage doesn't look too bad in that photo considering your description of a cart wheel over the bullbar. It doesnt take much to re-skin a defender, hopefully insurance see it that way.

How fast were you going when it kicked out?

Thank Christ you are ok.
It would seem that it may be a write off, and that may be the best result for you.
It was a damn nice car.

Garry

Hi Manic. I'm not sure how fast but not very as it was very hilly and soft and full of bulldust patches, I never seen the gravel coming though.

And Harry it was not just a car it's a friend. I do / still do love the 90 even if I becomes the weekend warrior.

And truth be told I'm glad it didn't have them airbags, it would have been real messy

Bummer Gary, Glad your OK. I shed a private tear for your car, never like to see a Defender in pain.

It would be very cool if the insurance buys you a new one and if you can retain the write off and make a cool weekend toy!!

But how about that May town track!! Awesome hey? I agree, best piece of driving on the whole Cape.

Cheers,

Hey Garry
Sorry to hear about the 90 it's a nice truck, glad your OK though. I know what you mean about the truck being a friend though, I get told by Bre and Steph, I like "The Tardis" more than them:angel:. ( I know who gives me more grief;))Would be a great project to rebuild it into a weekend warrior if they deem yours a statutory write off. I did the raising of the cubby box and drivers seat rails recently as we discussed, best thing I ever did.
Cheers Ian

Good evening all

I paid the 90 a visit in Townsville on Monday, it looked a lot worse after the whole shock thing passed.

Mr Rowan, the repairer / middle man was surprised I got out off the 90 with only one bruise which may not of happened during the accident as I was struck many times, not only in the arm but in the head thanks to Mulgo's seat extensions ;)

He did however say that I did work some magic on it twisting the chassis and denting every panel on the poor wee bugger and although not up to him he would consider the 90 a wright off. :( repairable though

Its Friday night almost two weeks after I scratched it and after the insurance company losing it three times I still have no answer as to what happens next which is a bummer

I cleaned the camper trailer yesterday on a side note and found I have sand blasted almost all of the paint off the bottom and a good bit off the front etc. etc. So if anyone out there fancies doing a full respray on a camper trailer send me a PM

Thanks for all of the good wishes and I will hopefully see you all at the Xmas Party, I'm off to Singapore on Sunday for 3 months picking up a used but good ship, FPSO Armada Claire

Well it is going to be a write off after all

Not sure as of where the auction will be but its either Townsville or Brisbane

The 14k plus of gear that was bolted on will all be with the car as its part of the claim so it could be a good buy if you have the know how to straighten it up

That includes the fridge all the radios the 33" tyres and lots of steel on the sides bottom and corners, the bull bar warn winch and a brand new plasma rope

But on the bright side I will be getting a shiny new one and with any luck all the bits I bought replaced

And if all goes well It should be some where in the country by the time I get home from Singapore in Nov / Dec

I will keep you all informed of where the auction will be should anyone be interested

Well the saga continues

Just received word that they are ordering a out of the box 90 so very happy there with the insurers :D

Charene being who she is compiled a beautiful spread sheet of all the things I bought and put on but they must have given it to the junior office "person" who has spent most of their time reading gossip mags I think

Charene put down all of the suppliers, ARB, Mulgo, Mudstuff etc. with all the receipts and part numbers trying to avoid confusion, a phone call to each would have cleared up all of the "what is this" statements

You can imaging my surprise when asked what a 30m synthetic rope was, not to mention was the bull bar bolted on?

That is a mere 2 of the two dozen questions they asked

So for my next 90 I think I will just give ARB or Mulgo or such like a shopping list and get them to fit it all in one go, then go back to the insurance and get a fixed price on the vehicle

Happy days eh!

Hope to catch up again soon

LOl I registered to bid after getting my hopes up... wish I was more prepared as it was pretty close to what I was willing to pay.

Went for $12000 which IMHO is pretty good.
