theorectically which would you prefer for extended touring towing a 1900kg pop top with a d2 td5 manual?.

235/85/16LT muddies or 245/70/16LT all terrains.

noting the standard size on a d2 td5 is 235/70/16.

The all-terrains....
Why do people put muddies on camper trailers?
If they're not providing drive, wouldn't an good, strong set of ATs be enough?
Just seems like a waste of money to my mind but then again so does towing off-road :D

exactly the same size as the tow car;)

Well the taller (larger diameter) the tyre the worse your fuel economy will be, so I wouldn't go crazy if you're towing. You could change ratios, but it's another job to do.

BTW, I assume you mean for the Disco, not the trailer.

to clarify yes i mean on the car, not the van.

Well in that case, depends on where you're going.
I might, Yorkie :D Need to find some rims for them first :lol2:

I would never do extended touring on muddies, specially not towing two tonnes. You are likely to be spending a fair bit of time on the blacktop and the muddies will be noisy and with two tonnes on behind, suicidal in the wet on the bitumen. Get a good set of ATs

and the continual increased torque loading of towing will destroy the tread blocks.

Appreciate comments so far, will hopefully pickup the van next week from Gold Coast so the run back on the muddies will give me some idea which way I will go. :)

I though our model D2 had 245/70/16 as a standard tyre size:confused:

Anyway a 1900kg van will be tough on your D2 with 235/85s, trust me I know, our 1500kg camper was enough for our D2 on 235/85s, add the wind drag of a van and well, could be a bit of a task.

Why do people put muddies on camper trailers?

there is probably a few reasons.........

my trailer runs my old tyres from the defender.........as the tyres are nearing the end of there life i select the best two to go onto the camper, this ensures the tyres on the camper are not a gazillion years old

i am running muddies on the defender at th emoment and am about to replace the two fronts with brand new ones......guess where the half worn muddies are going.....onto the trailer. sounds like a resonable solution for your old tyres to me

I agree, if I was buying tyres, I would run A/T's but if you already have muddies on it why change unless they are not worthy of such a trip. Weeds brings forth a very valid point, 1900kg is a fair weight to be running at 100kmh and old tyres dont like running for hours on end.

I do the same thing with the tyres from the disco, they go back onto the trailer

Well that's understandable but I know of a few people who don't run muddies while touring but seem to think their camper trailer needs them, which I think is a waste of money tbh.

Yorkie. I'd go for as close to standard size tyre as you can in the A/T pattern. I have Toyo Open Country A/T on my D2a 255 65 16 and can highly recommend them. It is a Classic though with the bigger rims. I get 12l/100km combined while towing our 23ft Daydream.

There are a lot of comments in regards to MTs. Our Trak Shak trailer has MTs on it - because they are the old ones from the Defender. The best 3 (out of 6) get put onto the trailer each time I buy a set.

In regards to MTs on the vehicle - trust me when I say that towing off-road teaches you a few things. First is that MTs are priceless when you need them - and funnily enough 1.5 ton of dead weight on the back does make a big difference.

I still get decent km's out of the MTs on road, however I don't push past 100km/h when towing and I'm still running 235/85R16s rather than upsizing. Makes a big difference.
