Prices seem to indicate they are....
1957 Land Rover Other Ute | Cars, Vans & Utes | Gumtree Australia Redland Area - Macleay Island | 1027828191 (http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/macleay-island/cars-vans-utes/1957-land-rover-other-ute/1027828191)
this one in QLD has been painted battleship or darker grey inside and out, all the galv is now black, it is a later diesel, has checkerplate floor... price? $10k !!!!
Do people not realise these are just cars, that their age isnt a reason to just add a couple grand (like 7 or 8) and if you change it from original then you cant ask a vintage car price either??
sorry the prices being asked annoys me!! This may be a good vehicle, it looks straight etc and neat, not my kettle of fish..... but the price ???...
for that money you can get a running and registered 1915-1920 vehicle....???
rant over... sorry!

why does everyone feel so compelled to rant over someone elses expectations?
if it is priced too high no one will buy it
if your not interested move on and keep looking!

Everything is worth as much as someone is willing to pay.

My Series 1 now has a brand new original engine (NOS parts throughout), and it has also been beautifully restored with the help of SLOW club members.
Shannons insurers came and inspected it for valuation and insurance purposes. After their inspection and research of other similar vehicles, they comprehensively insured my pride and joy for $18,000.00, and that increases each and every year.....(whilst my Defender drops each year)
And although that surprised me - it makes owning her all the more enjoyable!

I THINK GOOD SERIES IS WORTH THAT YOU TRY AND REBUILD ONE FROM SCRATCH YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BUY GOOD SERIES ONE TODAY FOR 1500 THOSE DAYS ARE GONE

Remember that good S1's in the UK go for double or triple that and the cost of shipping isn't that much in comparison to the purchase price.

Hi Nigel,
Don't forget that today many people are interested in the "retro look" and might like a fully rebuilt, reliable vehicle that looks the part but to an enthusiast does not seem "right". Each to their own ideas.
True veteran or vintage cars are more of a novelty these days and the comparative prices reflects that - big numbers were restored in the affluent postwar period through to the 1980s by people preserving what they had travelled in as children or what grandpop owned.

Wait until we get a few years away from the 70th anniversary and then prices will rise even more !
The sellers expectatons are high and although to a rivet counter it isn't 'right', it might actually be a more usable vehicle.
Will it sell at that price ? Possibly not, but as a seller it's best to go in with a high price & test the water. You can always lower the price if someone is interested.
There have been a few immaculate Series I's for sale recently around the $15 to 18K. They don't sell straight away and I wonder if they do actually sell or whether the owners just stop advertising them.
Buying & running a Land Rover used to be a low cost hobby but as parts get more difficult to find and more people become interested in owning/restoring a Land Rover the prices naturally rise.
Worth while checking the car websites for bargains.
Here's one with a rear PTO for $5,500 1956 LAND ROVER (4X4) for sale in NSW - Sydney $5,500 Other used @ carsguide.com.au (http://www.carsguide.com.au/cars-for-sale/D_2133070/used-1956-LAND-ROVER-%284X4%29----Other-Other-in-NSW-Sydney.html)

Sorry I shouldnt have put that ad in as an example, but
as I said it seems that $10k would be a good price for a very
nice restored example.(I like the diesel in that)
I do understand what you are saying about the whole 'throw it up the
flagpole and see if someone salutes" If someone is willing to pay
$10k then good luck to the seller I 'spose, what I believe it does is
makes other people think the paddock basher is worth $5000 when in
reality its probably $500 or $1k at most.
Im not buying or selling but it just annoys me...
as I said my 5c worth...

Conversely, I can't believe how cheap Series Land Rovers of all variants are...
Compare these to a 40 series Landcruiser for $22K... 1975 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40 Cars For Sale in QLD - CarPoint Australia (http://www.carpoint.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=SSE-AD-2341510&Cr=8)
Or maybe a 49 year old Ford Consul for $87K... 1964 Ford Consul - Cortina Mk I by Lotus Cars For Sale in QLD - CarPoint Australia (http://www.carpoint.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=SSE-AD-2246708&Cr=0)

There are still plenty of S1 around but their value has to go up but at the end of the day, no one forces anyone to buy anything and if you like what you see and you have the money, you buy it!!

What he said, if you need/want an item, you either buy it or walk away, but after you walk, big chance it will not be available, has happened to me on many an occasion. I just bought a set of rear lights for my Series 1 (Pork Pie variety) they were in Malaysia and on the net, I made an offer and they were mine, anyway cheers Dennis:angel:

That car was an ugly thing..
It's not the 10 g , I recon a good roadworthy s1 is worth that but not a "pimp my ride" frankenseries...

If you don't charge enough for S1 parts, chances are you find them for sale at the next swap meet for three times the money you sold them.( First hand experience) .W.

I think people are forgetting the reasons certain cars, vehicles etc become more expensive overtime. A lot of investors are now shifting over to early Land Rovers because of the fact there are only so many rare cars to go around and as time goes on there are less and less original Landies left. However there is a plentiful supply of most parts if you are willing to look hard enough. So if a number of discerning investors begin to buy the immaculate, all correct numbers concourse series 1 Landies for the 25K plus and then park them in their garages for 5 or 10 years it will lift the prices of all the bottom end land rovers as well. Add to this the odd one that comes up for sale or auction which has an exceptional history (Winston Churchill's S1 sold for 135000pounds plus recently) or is a very early model (first 50 or so) and has documentation etc and sells for exceptional prices it agains lifts the value of the cheap S1's we used to see laying around in paddocks doing nothing. Using the Churchill S1 as an example I can remember it reading in a Land Rover Owner International Magazine around the year 2000 that it sold at auction for around 50000 pounds. 13 years latter and its almost tripled in value! That is a good investment in anyones eyes. As the years go by and more and more S1's become un-restorable due to lack of original parts a well sorted S1 with matching and original numbers and original features or documentation will grow in value. Canny investors are buying the really good early S1's as an investment not to show or to use but to keep in concourse condition and make money off. This then drives up the price and value of the all the others of lesser condition, as I mentioned before. Just as another piece of info on the side I keep track of two or three american 4x4 websites and forums with references to Land Cruisers and Land Rovers and recently I saw a standard early 80's Land Cruiser troop carrier right hand drive Australian delivered diesel bought in Australia and transported to the USA for sale for $40000 US. It had over 350000kms on the clock and was nothing special but again, american investors are buying them and storing them much like people do with classic and rare Ferraris. If I had an early S1 with matching numbers and in nearly concourse condition I'd be insuring it for upwards of $30K and if I had a restorable one I'd be working on it day and night as prices are only going to climb. Sorry for the long reply - I guess you could say it was my 20 cents worth;)
