I installed the latest update for Handbrake and now it will not copy any DVDs. :(

Any hot tips on other applications I can download to copy DVDs or how to fix Handbrake?

I'm not looking for illegal download sites, I just want to copy the DVDs I've bought before the ankle bitters scratch them.

It's a bit long winded but you can use MakeMKV to rip the dvd then Handbrake to convert to something iTunes friendly, or just play back the MKV with VLC.

I also found that it wont copy discs on windows which i believe has to do with anti piracy security now built in .

Usually this happens when they put in a new anti feature. Best bet is to either find another one that works, wait for the update or keep an archive of all the versions and go back until one (usually very early) works.

When you install the latest version of Handbrake it tells you that it does not agree with removing copy write protection. The old versions worked well.

So, how do I install an older version of Handbrake from my Time machine back up? I've been able to install older versions of documents but when I try Apps it looks like I'm about to back date my entire hard drive

You need to remove the current version and put the .dmg (or similar) files onto the machine and run install again.

How do I get the old .dmg file from Time Machine?

OK I worked that bit out. For those who do not know you highlight the App you want to replace, open Time Machine and step back until you get to the version you want and then press Restore. Time Machine will then ask if you want to over-write the new app with the old one.

This still did not help as I got a message saying that the restored version of Handbrake was not compatible with 64bit-something. :(

This is getting out of hand.

I put the old Handbrake back on the iMac only to find it is 32bit and will not work with the 64bit VLC.

So I'm still on the hunt for a good ripper. :(

try this link

Top Three Free DVD Ripper for Mac - Rip DVD Free on Mac OS X (http://www.macxdvd.com/mac-dvd-video-converter-how-to/rip-dvd-free-mac.htm)
Maybe one of the ones mentioned will work for you.

Well I tried MacX DVD ripper Free.

It seems quick and easy.

Works with the DVDs I've bought, including a region 4 DVD no problems (just ignore the request to change zones and start MacX DVD ripper).

It did not rip my Ivor the Engine DVD - Nothing has ever been able to rip my Ivor the Engine DVD. It is a region 4 DVD that I got for my kids when I was in the UK. I remember it and want them to see it.

It is a 30yr old kids program and nothing can rip it. :\

The Uk is Region 2. Amazon Uk has a Ivor the Engine DVD for sale for 4 quid.
It claims to have every colour programme ever made.
For that price it might be worth buying it and trying to rip that disk.

I always found Mac the Ripper worked well but its success rate is down to about 50% now :(

Anyone try using MakeMKV to do the initial rip?

I suggested it because I had trouble ripping DVD's with Handbrake, and the MakeMKV -> Handbrake succeeded on every disk I tried... YMMV of course

Google search for MakeMKV and Handbrake (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=MakeMKV+Handbrake)

Sorry my mistake. It is the 4 quid Region 2 disk that nothing has been able to rip. It hangs the ripping program up and you have to hard boot your computer.

I tried it with MacX DVD Ripper and it did the same. I sent off the error report and was offered 15 days free trial of the pro version.

The pro version ripped it after I stopped using the default title selection - the longest title on the DVD is 3hrs but with only 4 min video. When I skipped the longest title and selected the rest it worked. :D

So yes at the end of my 15 days I will pay for a licence.
