View Full Version : Red Engine and series guages

Ok i'm trying to get the guages in my landy going.
Currently:
Fuel guage: 1/2 works, faulty sender probably
Speedo: Works fine
Water temp: Not working because the sensor seems to send no signal. (Does work when earthed)
Engine hours: no idea why it doesn't work because I haven't looked closely at it yet.
Charge/discharge: goes to some huge number, havn't found what it is meant to be attached to yet.
Oil temp: not connected to a sensor, and the only one that I can find is attached to the oil pressure light.
So my question is, where are all of the sensors, and why wouldn't the water temp one work (and why does it have 2 prongs on it?).
If you are curious as to the extra guages, I have the army to thank for that and they are mounted in the center of the shelf above the gearshift. Any help would be appreciated.

 the best thing would be to put it in the T.H.B., and get a GOOD auto sparky to fix those probs ! I know its not that complicated behind a landy dash ,but unless youv'e got a lot of patience ,get someone who knows what there doing, its worth it in the long run 8)

8) hi ferno, sounds like you ain't an eleterkitition, any they don't sound too hard to fix, lets start wif da juice jigger, first you will have to pull the sender out of the tank, then with power off,[cause black landie aint pretty] connect the sender wire to the sender and another wire to earth the body of the sender, connect the power, turn on the ign and move the float arm up and down-- the guage should go to full and empty, if it doesn't go full travel you may have a faulty trans or guage, to check the guage short the sender wire to earth breifly, if the guage goes to full or empty its ok, as long as it moves, tell us the result, and we'll work from there [also sometimes the float [if its a tin one] sinks, give it a little shake to hear if its full of petrol.
the water temp- if it has a sender pull it and connect it up to the wire and another wire to earth it--boil it up in water and watch the gauge, when its really boiling the gauge should tell you that, if its only a light, it should be on.
hourmeter - these are usually just a clock that gets wound up by a little solenoid, then it ticks away for a minute or so till the points close which activates the solenoid and ticks again, usually the points burn out, some times you can dress the points mit a wickle file and it will work again [don't expect it to last too long]
ammeter, you said it moves heaps, its telling you there is a big load some where, dunno, without looking at it, try disconnecting things until it stops having big swings.
oil temp - same as water temp, if the probe has two terminals then one goes to earth
if this goes invalid session i'm gunna spit it.
8) happy sparking, harry

Well I have patience, electrical knowledge and little money, so i'm gunna give it a go.
Ferno, i'd love to dump the problems on a sparky, especially with the extra wiring about, but I don't have enough $$$$. Thanks for the hints harry.
Ok,
Fuel guage: I've tested the guage, it works. I'll test the sender and get back to you.
With the Ammeter, it doesn't actually move at all, it can just measure a huge load for a vehicle.
Water temp seems to have two pins, so that may have to have an earth also.
Oil temp would seem to not be connected to the sender, so that may be the problem
I'll test that and see what we get style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Hi Phoenix,
Rocket here(ho chi 003 from REMLR) I can shed a little light on the extra instruments
AMPMETER , probably 100 amp used with the radio generator, should have 2 wires coming off the back of it about 5-6 mm thick trace them , if they just end in the engine bay they can be set up for the holden motor with out to much drama, if one goes to a power source the other is possibly taped off somewhere trace it and then get an auto elect to connect it up for you.
OILTEMP, Ser3 army had 6cyl motors which were fitted with oil coolers, ffr's had oiltemp guages fitted as they had to run the mtrs for battery charging and this cut down the insidence of boiled oil and cooked mtrs (they were a **** of a motor in a Landy) can be connected up to the holden sump, Hint, inlarge your sump capacity by getting another holden sump with resevoir at oposite end to yours and cut and shut take care as to the oil pump pickup, discowhite may be helpful there as he seems to have had veeery quick holden red sixes 8O (8000 the noise  )
WATERTEMP, find a dead six cyl landy motor (shouldn't be hard) and aquire temp sender adapt the sender to the holden mtr and conect sender wire the wire code(colour) at the gauge should be GREENwith a BLUE Tracer the power for the temp and fuel both come off the voltage stabiliser (small rectangular tin thing with 3 terminals in the dash) if this is dickey it would account for fuel gauge error
hope this is of some help

G'day Rocket.
Thanks for the hints. My amp meter actually goes to 150A either way, but somehow I don't think that all of that will be used too easily.
As for the sump, I have a Blue sump from a VC I think. THis appears to have a larger capacity.
At the moment i'm still seeing of the sensors that are in the engine are working. IF the aren't, then i'll start organising fresh ones.
I've been warned about the voltage stabiliser before, and at this point I have had no reason to doubt is, however that fuel gauge is still a problem, however I think that is the sender, not the stabiliser.
You might be able to help me with another question. On the firewall behind the dash is a semi transparent blue box with a couple of wires attached, and prongs for other wires. Do you know what this is?

Hi Phoenix,
Glad to be of some help, only just getting the hang of this forum thing, so i dont get on often also SHE who must be obeyed hogs the puta. Your ammeter sounds like it was for a 24volt radio setup hence the 150 amp, when hooked up to the holden it will probably only read +or- about 35 or 40, so the needle wont move much, there is a Ser3 FFR at british off road that they are wrecking if the motor is still in it i will requition (relocate) the temp sender if you want it as i have a good working relationship with them as a large percentage of "Aggie" my 68 2a GS came from there, style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif as for the fuel gauge try running an earth wire from one of the tanksender screws to a known earth point on the chassis, I had to do this on mine (from the sendermounting screw to a fuelline holdown clip  )
As for the blue box not sure on that will check the one at british off road for you if not somebody on the other site may be able to help style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif by the way have you seen the photos in the gallery of the remlr display at the jeep club swap itis page 4 of the gallery, Incisor had them taken as it was the first outing for his 59 comm recon

Hey Phoenix
Did you ever get your brake booster for Grover and did you get my reply to your request onthe other site :?: Rocket.
Phoenix
26th November 2003, 09:04 AM
Yeah, I got your reply (At least I think I did). THe one with the pics of the 2 boosters?
Neother appeared to be the right thing as far as I could see. Iroacly, I just organised to get one from British Off Road this morning. Now I guess that I hpe that it is the right thing :? . Paxton seems to know his stuff though, and only for some $300 odd less than my last quote, not bad.
I had a go at the fuel sender last night. Seems to work fine untill you go to a little under half, then the guage suddenly drops to zero. So it would appear that the sender isn't functioning properly in the lower hald of the range. Also the float has a little fuel in it, but only a few mills.
Odd about the 12V / 24 V business. THe info plate sais 12V, but someone else that I have been talking to says that his S3 FFR was 24V. Not sure what to think there :?:
I'm pretty busy for the rest of the week, so i'll give the rest of the guages and sensors a close look next week style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

hey Phoenix
glad you got the right booster, no it wasn't me that sent the photos, Paxton is the series X-pert up there Iam going up on Friday to sus the blue box with 2 prongs !!?? did you get the complete booster/mastercyl assy?? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif
Vottages: the truck is 12volt BUT the Radio gear was 24v they ran a second generator mounted on the top or side some of these started life on Austin Champs then went to the 2a's to run the 72 sets and Clansman rigs, like most things in our cash strapped Defence Force it goes from one to the next  did you get your series 3 light lens :?:
if u want any military stuff let me know as you should have my e-mail by now

Ahh, I was confused for a bit, btu I got the e-mail now. It went to my old e-mail address that i'm shutting down soon. My current one is in the profile here. Only difference is that it is @vision.net.au instead of @comic.com.
As for the park light. Nothing there yet, i'm still waiting for someone to mail it to me, but they seem to have become unreliable. I'm not sure what is going on.
Not sure if I've got the whole assembly or just the booster. I assume just the booster. WHy? Am I better off getting the whole thing?
Anyway, you can ask him on the weekend, because I won't be getting the money to him until next week, so he will still have it.
Thanks for your help style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Sorry about the E-mail address I just looked up 129 and hey presto! you will have to update that address in due time, that will keep handyman happy style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif
your booster? do you want the complete Booster/Duel M/cyl assy complete? or just the booster? the advantage of the assy is it is just a bolt to the pedal box connect the pipes and bleed  :!: :!: BUT these are Landrover brakes    I will check with Paxton and will check prices and notify you, do you want anything else (lens? type, park/flash, S/hand OK, price range? ) let me know.

Well I tend to get the local mechanic to do my brake stuff (He knows landys pretty well), so the booster that I have already ordered from paxton will be ok.
I had forgotten to get ross to change my e-mail on the other website, better drop him a line some time.
Perhaps you should grab me a park light. Mr Plod will catch up to me one days. If the other guy does come through, i'll replace one of the others, whichever is worse off. E-mail me with costs and i'll get the money to you.
Reverse light query, the switch on the gearshift, is it supposed to gave 2 wires attached to it? Mine only has one, and the reverse lights don't work (Funnily enough, my brothers series 3's reverse lights also don't work).

Hi Phoenix,
Just spoke to Paxton and he said that you had ordered the Vacc booster only, he said that he can do the Dual M/cylinder as well, so the Booster/M'cylinder Assy will cost double what he quoted you for the booster ($booster x2) + GST and if I pull it off YOU will get a discount, if you want the complete Pedalbox-M/Cylinder-Booster Assy that will cost Booster+M/cyl+$80 +gst and if I pull it out YOU STILL get the discount  LET ME KNOW you can get me on (07)5497 5933
Yes, the reversing light switch has 2 wires from it one is a hot lead (When Ign On ) comes down the firewall and across to the switch (THIS WIRE USUALLY GETS TANGLED IN THE GEAR LEVERS AND WILL CAUSE A DEAD SHORT BLOWING ITS RESPECTIVE FUSE OR WILL BURN DOWN THE CAR 8O  ) from memory the other wire goes down the left chassis rail to the back up lights, and were both plain green wires, I recommend sheathing the live wire with some spagetti tube from a craft shop or Crazy Clarks etc about 10cents a metre the Switch is the same as the engine bay mounted stop light switch, they don't like water a great deal(but Leyland was into cheapness) they can sometimes be cleaned, they need to be adjusted to operate, done by slacking the lock nut and screwing in (with Rev Gear Selected Ign On) so the lights just come on +1/2 turn otherwise the plunger gets jamed down the barrel (new switch is about $40) That is enough repair secrets for this morning  I have a 2a that needs a tuneup, timing is out, Dissy's moved,

No, looking at my bank balance, all that I can handle at the moment is the booster. That will fix my immediate problems.
Thanks for the offer anyway.
I'll have to have a close look at that wiring. THe one from the engine bay is ok, and sheathed already. Hasn't been a probloem with tangling at this point, I have snapped the gear lever twice, but no problems with the one wire that is there

Hi Phoenix
That's no problem re the booster, thought I would see how good a deal I could get you, I had to ring Paxton anyhow, will pick up a park lens while I am up there and let you know the $$$ s I will take it off the FFR just to keep it Army for you (I'am specialist scrounger on all things Army Landrover   style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif ) all most as good as McLauchlin. You've snapped the gearlever TWICE 8O I bet that you grab the knob and pull !! or push !!
use the palm of your hand or the 3 middle fingers (yeah I know it sounds pornographic, but the gearbox will respond to it) or whoever welded it did not do a V weld,

Your'e my kind of person
I do appreciate the offer, it is just saving for a house, and buying car parts don't mix too well. Unfortunately I need to deaw the line somewhere. Thanks for sorting a park light out. Whiloe you are there ............ Could you see if the hoops from along the bulkhead are still there (To tie down the fune curtain)? Also the fork on the back to tie the canopy to (The one that sits behind the jerry can wheyou you have them on). Thanks MR Scrounger
Initially when I snapped it (It took almost no pressure, there was a weak point in the metal of the shifter, and it was pretty obvious throught the break), I tried to purchase a new one. Mainly because the break was about 1 cm from the base of the shifter above the pivot point). But the guy wouldn't sell me one.
This guy is the only one that wrecks landys in the state, and is abbout 5 mins drive away, and is the biggest F*&%$@ in town. Overcharges, 80% of the time sais that he doesn't have the key for the yard etc. I'd just cut the lock off the yard one night and take my pick of pieces if I wasn't such a nice guy.
So this 'person' told me to get it fixed and he wouldn't sell me one. So I trundled off to get it fixed, put it back on, 2 weeks later, the weld broke, NOT HAPPY JAN  So I took it bakc and made them fix it properly, and I wasn't paying a second time. It isn't the best fix, but it is on the list of stuffed bits that need fixing eventually, but will do at the moment.
So not entirely my fault, i actually drive grover very gently.

Hi Phoenix
Your park lamp lens is in the mail, with enclosed note, I took it off the FFR it is near new when I got it home and washed and polished it only then did I notice that some PLEEB of a squaddy had stubbed his smoke out on it, bet it was CM----F bloody sunday soldiers, oops, sorry general Carswell!! Incisor and I hit Paxton this morning, me for ffr bits Incisor for bits for his 59 command reconnaissance (out of the 2nd contract) he is now a member of REMLR. they now just give me the key to the compound and away I go so if you can't obtain it down there let us know and I get it and send it down. as for the the blue thing i couldn't find one on these wrecks could be a unit mod, Phil Hastings may know,
I didn't read your post till this a'noon about the little hoops :?: they are called FOOTMAN LOOPS usually held on by rivets (i prefer screws and nuts brass) next time that I am up there i will scource some, you may be able to buy them new from a canvas canopy /awning supply place, the little fork at the back  :?: is that the one welded to the gall body capping, if so, that is part of the corner piece best thing is to copy it in round rod bend it up and get your mate/mechanic to weld it on ,copy angle from opposite side. Here endith this afternoons instructions on how to keep Grover happy

Must do that at some point, the website doesn't really say what the history is.
For a while I had assumed that Ross had started the whole gig, then when I got to the members page for the first time, nope he isn't anywhere near the first member.
I'd better run and actually do some work, otherwise the boss might get a bit edgy.

Hi Phoenix
Don't let the membership No's fool you the whole idea was a combo of about five of us, Ross, Myself , S Stansfield and a couple of people in the southern states in a effort to trace our vehicle's history, and we lucky people got to choose our Numbers, Ross chose 007(Ross Bond-o-Fill, DA DA) Steven with "Norma-Jean" was given 001 as his vehicle took out best Military Vehicle at the 50th anniversary gathering at Cooma in 98 judged by James Taylor how had been invited out from the U.K. So it all started from the idea to track down the history of our vehicles , it is now starting to come to fruitation as in the new additions, there has been some advances made in relation to the ARN's from there, hopefully to trackdown the log books, and with luck, find out which unit they were assigned to so in parades they can have their correct markings on

Ahh, I see, maybe a REMLR history should be written for inclustion on the page?
I'm one of the lucky ones really, I found school of armour markings on my door, and a name that probably came from an armoured unit.
Resultantly i'm making some School of armour unit plates to slide in, with REMLR ones on the back (multi purpose style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif )
I know about the ARN hunt pretty well, I was helping ross collate some of them. Mostly some of the series 3 FFR ones. Mine was about 200 from the end of the list, bummer style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif
