Unfortunately my 2009 FL2 TD4 has developed the dreaded rear diff drone.

According to the dealer it will need a new diff kit, (approx $1600 job). The dealer has gone back to Land Rover to see if they will assist with the costs, although the car is no longer covered under warranty, it's only done 42K kms.

Anyhow, my questions is what exactly are the dangers of continuing to drive the car before the repair takes place? How much more damage could occur?

How did you go with Land Rover?

My 2010 FL2 TD4 has developed a sonic howl that is almost unbearable at 95KM/h, I haven't been the regular driver of it for the past 2 months so unfortunately was only alerted to the annoying noise on the weekend by the regular driver, as after a new set of ContiCrossContac tyres was fitted it was actually worse. The vehicle is 5 months out of warranty but only done 68K.

A dedicated LR service centre confirmed it was the diff, and said although it was common they had never heard of one failing but after speaking the dealer I brought it from they backed tracked and said it should not be driven until repaired. I then went to the dealer who is going to see what Land Rover will do, they also appeared to think it was a common problem.

FYI - Land Rover authorised the dealer to rebuild the diff.
