Quick one - is this white residue the result of a leak in the gasket seal?

Possible, but diesel exhaust is more likely to be dark/black/sooty. That looks more like dried liquid residue, as in water, radiator fluid, etc.. Something with salts in it to leave white residue. I note there is a ring of the same? around the EGR fitting too? The oil flowing in the right of the pic is more concerning maybe? :)
Cheers Scott
Just had a brainwave and enlarged the Pic 200x in the browser, cant say Im not slow :=/ and it does look as if there maybe a gap there. start it up and place some powder there and see if it blows off.

Thanks Johnny, very observant of you. Just a bit of WD40 i sprayed on the wastegate actuator.
Question : if you grip the wastegate actuator shaft with multi grips or vicegrips, how hard should you have to push to move the shaft (towards the firewall)
I have to almost use my whole bodyweight. Feels like a very strong spring and not like its impeeded in anyway, just strong.

Hey Chris had a very similar issue with my turbo waist gate...
It shouldn't be that hard to move with multigrip.
I pulled my actuator from the turbo, found the little
Waist gate lever on the side of the turbo was very stiff to rock solid shut... Had to spay
Wd40 to free it up and then some white grease spray...
Moves freely now!
The actuator was fine.. Once pulled off you should be able to pull the rod
In and out, with some muscle...

Thnaks Johnny. Maybe thats the source of my slowly increasing fuel consumption?

Yes , Mine was the same, took me ages to work out what was up. The vehicle would go well sometimes then others it was sluggish, then all of a sudden it would go. The wastegate was sticking and not moving free, sometimes, mostly when I checked it!, it would work then others stick shut. I think I need to keep sinking the boot and make it work :D

They go well if it sticks shut! Until I guess with a TD5 the ECU says "hang on"
I used to have a Daihatsu Charade Turbo and some nights my wife would come home and tell me that gee the car is going well. That was my cue to run down and start manipulating the wastegate.

Check your windscreen washer pipes ;)

That sounded so simple and plausible that i had to check it straight away. Alas, no leak - although there is a little dribble now i played with one of the fittings!

Did you fit the EGT sensor and turbo yourself or have it done?
Maybe it is residue of badly advised sealant that has burnt off, like the gasket goo I found on the gasket of my FPR.

Fitted the egt myself. Turbo, no idea. Might grab a gasket and change it anyway.

It should be plausible ;) I was getting residue on top of the turbo heat shield when the washer jet on the passenger side failed.
cheers
