View Full Version : Puma Indicator Issues

The indicators in my 2013 Puma 90 are doing some strange things.
We have just returned home after some 2,500ks of driving over 6days some in rain some in dry and some towing a trailer.
After about 2.5 to 3hrs of steady driving at 100km/hr the indicator's stop flashing and just burn orange.............tried stopping and turning everything off and on but to no avail.
Left right or hazard the lights are there but don't flash.
After manually flashing for a couple of hours and stopping overnight I observed that once the car was parked for a few hours they started working again.
The cars under warranty but this is going to be a difficult one to demonstrate to the dealer.
Has anyone had this problem......I,m willing to have a go at fixing it but don't know where to start.
Its as if its linked to engine bay temperature but this doesn't make sense to me.
At this point I'll wait and see what more informed minds come up with
Cheers Paul

Are they glowing orange without the indicator switch on, or are the glowing orange steady when you indicate left or right. What happens when you use the hazard lights? When they glow steady orange - are BOTH sides on - or just one side?

My guess is that they are glowing solid when you indicate left or right, and that the correct side is lighting up. The only issue is they are not flashing - just staying on. There's no magic electronics in the PUMA, a plain old flasher relay does the business, I'd guess that has developed a fault. (My old td5 did this because of a dry solder joint - 10 seconds with a soldering iron fixed it.)

I notice you live in Sydney…. why concern yourself with such trivial matters when no one else bothers to use them! :wasntme:\

I would try the dealer first, I would suggest its a relay getting hot or wiggling loose

I have this same issue with my 2011 Puma.
Told the dealer about, but because they couldn't replicate it,, they couldn't fix it :(
For me, at least now, it only happens every now and then. Makes no difference with running times or not, as it can happen first thing in the morning, or on a long drive, in the wet and in the cold.

My 2012 puma flashes the trailer icon on the dash even though I'm not towing. It started after I used the trailer plug, but now it won't go away.
Not of any assistance to your problem, but I'll be raising it with the dealer soon.

Do you have a bull bar? (IF yes - then it's possible that the indicator lamp in the bull bar is too high a wattage.)

Indicator relay is under the dash in the fuse box in a PUMA. I don't remember which one it is though. (You might feel it clicking when it's actually working.)

Thanks for the replies guys.........will investigate the flasher relay this weekend.........could be the source of your problem as well Chop's I knew the dealer path would be difficult.........I've got a soldering iron if this is what's needed.

Looking on line it would seem that if the flasher unit is faulty I would need one of these 4PIN ELECTRIC FLASHER UNIT RELAY 96FG14N089AA

FORD TRANSIT ESCORT PUMA KA MONDEO 4PIN ELECTRIC FLASHER UNIT RELAY 96FG14N089AA | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-TRANSIT-ESCORT-PUMA-KA-MONDEO-4PIN-ELECTRIC-FLASHER-UNIT-RELAY-96FG14N089AA-/261117999839)

It seems to be a solid unit what would need soldering?

Will be looking to find the relay on the car at the weekend

You could always get some video of the problem. Then the dealer can see the problem & if they don't have any fix for the issue, they can send the video with a report to LR Technical for a resolution (hopefully).

What an easy solution wish that I had thought of it at the time.........had my trusty IPhone at hand

will poke around on the weekend if nothing seems amiss, then what an excuse for an overnighter some time in the future.

The bulbs typically supplied with a bullbar are 21Watt. The Defender senses the extra load and presumes it has a trailer indicator connected.
If this is the case, substitute LED arrays in the bullbar repeater indicators.

No bullbar but I did wire my towbar electrics into the "hidden plug" in the back wheel arch............soldered all the connections and wrapped in tape

will check these on weekend too

Sounds far out there but it will be water in the trailer plug.

My mates Xtech 110 has the same thing happen every time he tows his boat when it's raining. Strange I thought then it happened to me last month towing my wife's horse float in the rain.

Just happened to me for the first time Yesterday and what do you know, a thread is here already. Amazing!

Restarted the car and it fixed itself until next time anyway.

Yeah Paul. Had the tow bar factory fitted on delivery. Only recent change is the ARB bullbar.

Happened again today aswell and at the dealer but long story short it was the least of my worries.

P.S. Nice colour on your bus;)

I run a tow bar, and have the lights hooked up via the old retro loom from my D2.
It's happened with/without trailer, before and after fitting the loom. The wiring on the trailer was a bit stuffed at one point, and when I used the blinker, it made the weirdest buzzing noise. Not sure if it's some kind of warning sound or not, but certainly drew my attention to it so I new to fix it.

Interestingly, I've blown a front Parker light, and since then, there hasn't been an issue with the blinkers.

I blew a front parker a while ago too. And then the headlight followed soon after on the same side - weird:confused:

Indicator problem is becoming worse, the car is SWMBO's daily and she is being very patient for now

I have checked indicators and trailer plug/wiring for water ingress all seem fine

At the moment we are in the midst of a heat wave and no rain yet problem is there almost constantly .............a trip to the service centre is an option but finding the time and losing the car for whatever time period is difficult at the moment.

Any input would be appreciated is it worth replacing the flasher relay unit thingo...............are they expensive? I'm guessing they just pull out and a new one clicks in.

i had the indicator relay replaced under warranty, same symptoms, indicators would not flash, but would stay on constant when the indicator switch is on.

The relay was replaced 25,000km ago, and so far no problems.

Rang the dealer and suggested maybe it was a relay....................end result new relay no problems no cost and everybody's happy (SWMBO and me because she is if you know what I mean)

.....wasn't my tow bar wiring!!!.

Thanks for everyone's input
