The smoke under load may be caused by injector pump adjustment. Has the pump been adjusted in an attempt to get more power?
BTW. Please turn off the Caps Lock Key. :)

the pump was changed 6 months ago after the old one sprung a leak. it was smokey with the old pump. i didnt think there was any adjustment on the pump...... but you are now the second person to tell me there is. i know you can adjust the idle speed.

Have you read the pdf in this thread?
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/good-oil/50857-300tdi-fuel-injection-pump-tweaks-bosch-ve.html#post683644
It explains in some detail, the different adjustments that can be made to the fuel delivery.

before buying new - take out your injectors, get them tested.
Injector replacement is fit and go.

Has it always smoked or is this a recent thing? Is it down on power?

Air and filters are all good.
It smoked on the old pump aswell. the power is pretty good.
If i could keep the power but get rid of the smoke that would be perfect !

Yes its got a snorkel...
it has also done 360k so I think the injectors would need to be replaced anyway ??

Get the injectors tested. Won't cost much - especially if you remove and refit them.
I have never noticed a significant difference in smoke or power in a diesel after replacing injectors.

I had the injectors done on a 200tdi with 280k.. It was like someone had added an extra cylinder.. Huge difference. I guess it was just wayy down on power before hand though. :/

It's been reported here quite a few times of Tdi sets tested at 300,000km+ and being slotted straight back in.
Hopefully JC will chime in soon?

I spoke to the guys at "Triumph Rover Spares" in Adelaide. they advised me to back of the adjustment screw under the diaphragm on the fuel pump.
Hey Presto..... it worked.
they said i may notice it will loose a bit of power. i havn't noticed it !
Now i don't has the smoke screen behind me and i should notice my fuel bill goes down...

Unless the screw was loose and moving by itself, then you've just addressed a symptom and not the actual problem.
