View Full Version : Amarok failure at 80k. Complete destruction

Want an update on my Amarok after 2 years???

New engine at 79k. Timing belt was destroyed due to drive belt going thru the timing cover. Pistons bit valves.

New clutch at 79k as the idiots forgot I mentioned the shudder. So the gearbox came out again.

Rattle in the headlining. Like a nut in the pillar moving. They can't find it.

Fuel filler cover won't unlock randomly. Have to pull inner wheel liner off to get to it. They can't fix it.

Diff whines. They claim this is normal. 79k old.

Clunk and vibration in driveline. Wait for the last post.

Trailer lights make the indicators flash fast. Genuine VW towbar and ECU box. They can't work out why!!!!

Took 6 attempts to get one dealer to attempt to fix these.
Doing so they damaged the front guard. The repair was something your 3yo could finger paint.
Bolts left loose on the bull bar.
CB antenna cable cut to get the bar off. They used joiners and tape to connect it.
Oil left all under the cross member. Brake fluid on the panels just wiped off. Not washed.

Best part. Vibration when I picked it up after 8weeks. 500km later the tailshaft came adrift and trashed the underside.

The Dealer in fault won't let me in there dealership as I made a scene. No **** Sherlock. Who wouldn't after they damaged the body and their lack of thought leaving bolts loose or over torqued, causing a tailshaft to trash the floor at 80kmh.

VW are looking into buying it off me due to the drama the dealer created.

The price I want, they won't want to pay. They have a car that has been ruined due to one dealers incompetence.

Not Happy Jan !!!!!

Clarkie.

Have been following your posts on ausamarok, thought you were relatively happy with it besides the engine failure, which from what I've read there is a fix for this? I better check mine. Guessing the dealer is around ferntreegully/burwood hwy area?

Indicator thing is weird. I made a load box for ours prior to picking up our new camper trailer, turns out I didn't need it as the light work fine on it.

Yours was one of the first ones out here correct?

Have you people fitted the new EDK kit ?
There are reports of timing belt failure with 5 to 10 thousand kilometers only.
Have VW in Australia issued a recall for the Amarok?

Your not alone,i had an LR dealer try to do this about 12yrs ago to a D2.

Some survey people rang up for my opinion of the dealership, and i think they got the biggest rant they had ever had.I even got an immediate apology from the dealer.

Still haven't been back......!

Soooo, would it be fair to say this car you loved, that drove so well, with such refinement, and engineering greatness wasn't a lemon, it just fell apart from poor build quality by robots.

I have a mate who bought a new Golf GT, he loved it until the gear box exploded in the first 6 months. Under warranty it took 3 months to be replaced. Accompanied with a lot of procrastinating, little information offered, and a bit of deceit from the dealer.
LR may not be he greatest at put together a Defender, with the poms day dreaming about what they do. But I can't fault the company on warranty and service. I've had everyone of my issues rectified without a question. Kind of makes the Defender miles in front don't you think.:D

Jason, I've had my small issues rectified with VW as well, been great to deal with. May be clarkies issues are the dealer he has dealt with are crap. The cause of his timing belt issue was due to not enough protection of the belt, VW are sorting this out. Its amazing how you only here the bad about things and not the good. I will more than likely be purchasing another next year.:)

i think i read on the other forum that VW offered to buy the car back from him for 18k.

given that the car is 2 years old, i think thats disgusting.

Sounds like something Land Rover has been living with for many many many many years... Its the first question I get asked... your game owning a Land Rover, usually from people who have never even been in one.

someone did that with a T86. left it out the front of the toyota dealership with a big sign saying "5000km and the engine no longer runs. ive left the keys inside to demonstrate."

Think I'd be having a chat to Consumer Affairs . Product not fit for purpose . Fix or replace. I can also remember something about there being a " Lemon Law".

Or the media ie A Current Affairs.

yeh vern all good mate. Clarkie was raving how great the thing was in one thread, then he wanted to burn it in another. Didn't really know if he was fishing but I guess if you going to chuck it, you got to be able to catch it.

I had my ride go to **** the second day home from the dealer. I know how disappointing and frustrating it can be. I just hope VW come good for Clarkie as LR have for me.

Spent a day driving an amarok on a 4wd course for work, was a bit disappointed to say the least. And that's saying something as my work 4wd is a triton and apart from a couple of short comings with the suspension I recon it a good Ute. Still rather my d1 when off-road tho hands down

In my opinion you are intitled to a replacement or a refund, see below:

The Australian Consumer Law applies to most goods and services, including new and used cars, except those bought at auction or private sale, where you're still basically on your own.

When you buy a car from a dealer, you now have the protection of legally enforceable consumer guarantees, including that the car is of acceptable quality (which includes being safe, free from defects and durable) and reasonably fit for any purpose you specify when buying it, such as towing.

If you have what the ACL calls a major failure with your car, you are entitled to return it to the dealer to claim a refund, or a replacement -- your choice of an identical new car or one of similar value.

A major failure is when a reasonable consumer would not have bought the car if they had known about the problem, or when the car is substantially unfit for its normal purpose.

In other words -- the car is a lemon.

If you have a minor problem with the car, the dealer is still allowed to fix it under warranty. If you have to get your car fixed at another workshop, you're entitled to claim the cost from the dealer who sold you the car.

However, if the dealer can't fix the problem within a reasonable time, you are also entitled to a refund or a replacement.

Update.
Extended warrantee given as good will gesture.
Vw had my car 4 months.
It's now done about 120k. And is better than before.

I'm happy with it. But not ecstatic. Having said that. Drives a lot better than the new holden dual cab we have at work

Thats good news! A friends Golf GTD blew the engine and they replaced absolutely everything including the exhaust, but it took a while as all of the parts had to come in. Its on the road again and she's happy.

Which motor have you got in it?

Honestly I only ever hear bad things about VW's of the current era. Especially the DSG gearboxes, they seem to be a real issue.

Only the dry clutch ones

The six speed wet clutch units are pretty bullet proof

Yep. Friend of ours had a manual Golf that would just stop. No fault codes so VW couldn't fix it. Ended up selling it and getting a Corolla after 4th time it happened. Not much fun having your car stop on the motorway with no warning...

And our 2008 DSG Passat has been faultless, apart from a bulb in the boot, same as the Defender, so there you go.:)

Given they made 5.7 million cars in 2012, i haven't heard that many bad story's,
if 0.1 % were lemons that's 5700 lemons, which i supposes is 5700 too many

One bad story: A woman in Melbourne died in a Golf as it just stopped on the motorway and a truck ran into it. I suspect that it had a similar issue to my friend's car. This fault appears to be common in Golfs, as a Google search indicates lots of posts (not many resolutions though). Aussie motor scribes have said if you want a car for 10 years get a Mazda, Honda, Toyota, Hyundai; Golf is ok when under warranty.

All hype - the inquest found that the Golf was not the issue and the crash was most likely related to the women talking on the phone. The Golf she was driving was not a DSG but a normal manual.

A friend of mine I was talking to last Sunday has a Skoda Octavia that's around 5 years old with a recent DSG failure to its credit. He was quietly driving along on cruise control when he heard "a hoon nearby revving his engine like mad". Shortly he realised it was his car with the trans reduced to a box full of neutrals. After shutting down the car he restarted, the car drove home normally. On contacting the dealer they sent out a tilt tray and took it away. It turned out there's a critical wire in the sump with low quality insulation. The insulation fails, a short circuit freaks the ECU and causes a loss of drive. Apparently a common problem according to his mechanic.

All cars seem to have common problems don't they, but you never seem to here all the good stuff about cars. Never had a problem (except for the injector recall on the Passat) with any of our vw's, had more problems with our Subaru, commodore, falcons, Hyundai, land rovers, don't get me started on land rovers:angry::D
Basically if it has moving parts, it has "common problems":)
