What format are they in?
If *.JPG, then no, you cannot convert them back to the raw image. Or so I understand.

Yes .jpg
I'm thinking it has to be something you do at download time..... Hopefully somebody can point me in the right direction for the future

My Nikon saves in both NEF and JPG formats. I have configured the camera to do this.
NEF is the native format.

If they are raw files they will be too big to email. I use this site for getting around this problem.

They are not to big to email you just have to email them one at a time its painful and time consuming....
Weeds if your camera is set up for jpegs just send them...most people that have DSLRs have the camera save to the native file which in Nikons case is NEF because it captures a lot more information at the time of photo which means more scope for manipulation later on in post process.....
and if if you don't manipulate you can still save them as jpegs anyway which is what I do with a lot of them.
I would personally email him and ask him for is postal address and just throw them all on a CD and post it, much easier.
i find uploading raw files painfully slow with my interent whether its for email or for file sharing or what ever..that's why I usually just reduce mine in size massively and flick them to photo bucket. Unless someone wants a specific photo then I will make the effort to send it but not if they want like 10/20 of them

Navigate your way through the menus and you will find an option to save in native format NEF or RAW, jpg or jpg and native. If you have selected to save to your storage card in jpg only you will never get the native format back.

Once you sell a .RAW or a .NEF file you don't own the rights to that picture.
I keep all of my .RAW files so that I can prove my ownership to any .JPG photo that I have made available.

It will depend on what his/receiving ISP will allow through the email gate.
My RAWs are around 25-30mb, I cant email them to work as the work email gate, is (or at least was) restricted to 10mb from external.

yeah I know Weeds has a D90 so I think his photos will come in just under 10...
Wrinklearthur
do you have a link or can you refer to something regarding that statement.
I would of personally thought that once you "Sell" a photo the likely hood is they would expect all rights.
the fact he is giving someone a COPY of the Nef file..his original would still be on his computer I would think he would be pretty safe.
EDIT: I just tried to look up the file size..you might be right Bushie as I think the D90 might put a raw file out at about 15mbs

Hi Dullbird
I have tried to get my head around this photo ownership thing and it's a bit beyond me I am afraid.
Here is a link to the University of Melbourne for you to look at that deals with the subject.
Photographs : Copyright Office (http://www.unimelb.edu.au/copyright/information/fastfind/photographs.html)
If after reading through the article and you can enlighten us please do.

in that case weeds im sure you can fit them singularly in to an email. sometimes even two...
my hot mail will send 10mb per email I would expect most lower end service providers to be the same

I have two cards in my D7000. On one card the image is saved as a JPG and the other card the image is saved as a NEF.

I would never send a raw/nef file, when I provide my images to a professional lab to print my work I do it in Tiff format to allow the lab to adjust curves and profiles to suit their hardware.
In some special cases I leave some of the layers open for the lab to adjust the image to their monitor.
In the images provided I put instructions in the metadata with restrictions, instructions and conditions of use.
Also (and it is very important for the USA laws) in the metadata I put my contact details.
Regarding the copyrights Australian laws copyright ownership it is by default to the author with some exceptions if the work the photographer is doing was as an employer of news paper or something similar.
Cheers

The copyright of any photo automatically belongs to the person who has taken it. That is basic copyright law.
A photographer can (and would be silly to) hand over all rights to an image he/she has taken to a publisher. However, most photogaphers would only license an image for use. For example, every invoice I send to a client states the fact the image is for a single, non-exclusive, copyright use for a particular purpose the licensing stipulates.
Recently, I was paid multiple times for the same images by Australia Post. Once when an artist used them as basis for his artworks that ended up on stamps and once when post reproduced them in cards and a third time for one image in a calendar.
The bottom line is it is naive to even give away images to magazines and other media rather than get at least a basic licensing fee. After all, magazines and publishers have paid staff. Why should a photographer end up without any compensation for adding value to a publication? Of course, not-for-profit organizations are a different kettle of fish, but in general most media will try and suck as much freebies as they can. No thanks.
A well-known professional bird photographer I know once said: A picture is worth as much as the buyer is willing to pay for it. So if you give yours away for free to magazines and other similar entities, that's exactly what yours are worth in the end. Nothing.

you have bascailly said what I meant except I didnt use the word license
some of what you said was already my understanding such as any photo taken is automatic copy right..
but the rest of the info is very informative thank you :)
as for charging...I agree with what your saying I dont charge because I dont have the confidence to do so..I give them away to people because it makes them happy.
maybe one day I will who knows
