Good to see Rangies showing how its done. Not trying to be picky but the OBC is actually run between Broken Hill and Menindee. I live 5 Minutes out of Mildura but alas did not have the time for the three hour trip to Broken Hill to watch the start. :x Next year. Thanks for the results HSVRangie as i had not heard a thing down here as to who was winning.

It's run in four areas; Broken Hill, Nundooka/Velt, Denian and Poolamacca.

Any 4WD can enter, provided it meets the safety criteria like a roll cage and four-point harness. In the 2004 comp there were mostly GQ Patrols, some GUs, lots of Rangies, three 80 Series, a couple of Zooks, one Vitara, a couple of Hiluxes, a couple of Wranglers and a Bush Rangie. Modifications varied from almost nothing (touring class) to lightweight body panels and big V8 engines.

Good country up there, I spent 5 years up there between Menindee and Wilcania wiring up station properties with my father and Denian was one of the them!!!! Bloody dry up there at the moment but when it rains you can not go very far especially on the east side of the darling, unless you have a Rover of some sort!!!!

Very dry at the moment, although it did rain. No problem starting campfires!

Definately dry all right!! Though there has been been some scattered rain around Tibooburra. Dad had to stop in his Discovery last night, as near the Queensland border they had about half an inch of rain and he had problems keeping his tandem trailer following him!!! 8O Haven't heard how much around broken Hill or Menindee though?? The OBC would of been a bit more interesting for the competitors if they had som edecent rain there!

There was a touch of rain early last week, at least where we were near Nundooka. But if anything it made things easier by damping the dust and making the sand easier to drive on. The mud course is muddy no matter what, some people where chest high in water while in the car which I think is dangerous. We were fixing broken steering when our group did that section so I only know of it secondhand.

If it had been really wet then the rock sections would have been harder, but it didn't rain during the day so they dried out.

The dust was a real problem, sometimes you couldn't even see the end of the bonnet. So a bit of rain would have been great.

According to some this year's OBC was easier than previous years, or maybe the old-timers knew the tracks already. Certainly I found it interesting enough.

It's an interesting area and I will explore it more fully when I go back in September after a Simpson/Oodna trip. I'll drop by and say gidday to those great folk at Silver City 4WD for sure!

Hey there rmp,
Did you tag along the OBC for the whole week of the event? I wouldn't mind following next year if i have the time but haven't heard much from the spectators point of view!
As a follow up, they had some more rain near Tibooburra last night and surrounding areas! Dad said they had 1.5 inches where he is and he is going to be stuck there for a few days before he can shift! Cockies are happy as pig in pooh! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

No, I was competing, so there for the whole week except when we were fixing the car at Broken Hill. So missed a few stages, including Gunbarrel and the mud.

I didn't twig you you where competing! What sort of vehicle where you driving? was the steering problem the only mechanical problem you had? Dad lives down the road from Silvercity 4wd!! Your trip in September does that include the birdsville races?

I was co-driving/navigating/winch monkey for the Brawn 80 Series in Touring Class. Initially the steering rod bent when we drove backwards over a shrub on the IPF. Fixed it by winching it straight with a Rangie.

Then the shaft inside the steering box broke completely on the day sand motorkhana (my driver reckons he didn't hear me say "back off"!). The viscous coupling packed up on the fan, so the engine cooked but it survived. In fact the first time it cooked I was driving the sand motorkhana at night, all of a sudden the temp gauge goes crazy and steam comes pouring out from under the bonnet. Colin yells at me to keep going, so I do but back off. Small problem; I cannot see where I'm going as the combination of sand/steam has caked the windscreen and the wipers don't work. So we complete the second lap with Colin giving me directions. That's the definition of trust, nearly flat out at night in sand dunes driving blind with the engine doing an impression of Puffing Billy.

I repaired seven punctures in three tyres after the IPF, and they were brand new Simex JT2s! The worst puncture was one we did rolling into camp, that was a mighty big hole.

A lot of cars had problems. The Bush Rangie had a new clutch. Kym Bolton did both CVs on Nitrocharger, borrowed one from a spectator for the final mud run. Speaking of mud, it killed more than one car as you'd expect when it's over-bonnet. On the Prologue about seven cars in succession damaged the driver's front tyre and drove the remainder of the section with it flat; we noticed that and went a bit easy, also put 25psi all round and survived intact.

One guy wrote his racecar off, rolled it on the Gunbarrel, and then his wife's family car burnt to the ground. At the presentation Andy Brown (ARB) gave a $2000 cheque, then the organisers passed a bag round and then auctioned one of the big canvas posters for $750.

Forgot about the Birdsville races, will have to see when it's on.

Hi Robert,
Sorry you had bad luck competing in this years event. Entering next year? It is obvoiuslly a hard event on machinery? I will have to make the effort newxt year to tag along for a look. Mind you i have got a nice two door Rangie sitting in the shed that i can not make my mind up to what sort of engine to put in it ? From what you have said i probally will destroy the vehicle?

Probably will be next year. Bad luck? Maybe. But I don't care, it was great just to be part of the action.

I don't think you'd necessarily destroy a properly maintained, reasonably carefully driven vehicle. If you took it easy and just finished you'd do pretty well. Only 5 teams managed no DNFs. So I'd say give it a go.

Engine; recommend something powerful for those creek runs! The word is that 200kw at the wheels is needed to be competitive. But to just have fun you could use a standard engine.

Hmmmm,
Gen 3 chevy in the old two door might be the go  Sounds expensive though

Depends what you want to do. If you want to win, a very powerful petrol is a good option. Just compete and finish, the biggest turbdiesel you can get!
