Just completed a service to my 97 TDI Disco, 90,000 km's. Changed the oil - RX Super API CI4, very very good stuff!, changed the oil and fuel filters. What a game getting the filters off! God I reckon whoever put them on, and they were land rover items and done by a land rover dealer, must have used a 16" stilson to tighten them. If fitted properly the seals should be lightly oiled and the spin on filters tightened by hand only! Any way they are now hand tight and don't leak.
When I was cleaning the air filter box, which was very very dirty, I decided to clean the attached suction pipes fitted to the forward side of the filter box. There I found an air spinner and a rubber self closing valve. The rubber self closing was absolutely full of rubbish. I wonder how many more of the same type of one way valves are completely chocker. I imagine this valve is to allow water to drain out and not allow air in?? Anyway it might stand a chance of working now. Any body else found this problem??
All else was well.

G'day Shifter,

I found that the oil filter done by hand was enough - just remember to tighten again once warm.

Also when taking off the oil filter - place a plastic bag over the filter and unscrew from underneath the car - bag catches most of the oil spills.

Hope this helps,

LRH.

Yep shifter,, the good thing about doing your own servicing,,
you (should) always be able to undo the filter by hand,,, style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
