View Full Version : To much oil pressure for tubro?

Hey all,

So finally got turbo and exhaust sorted. Took it for a run, and it was blowing alot of smoke! Pulled the exhaust off and found alot of oil, there did look to be much in the manifold when I peeked through the wastegate. Its a T25 turbo I got off eBay which I put a rebuild kit through. Turbo oil is fed from side of dual filters, and drain line drains into the tappet cover.

No the drain hose does have a small kink in it, could this cause the problem?

Does anyone run oil restrictor to there turbo? Could there be to much pressure?

Hopefully someone can help

Sean

I'd put money on it being a drain issue. Particularly if the drain hose is kinked.
I think the standard banjo bolt for a T25 journal bearing turbo has a 1.6mm hole in it.
Of the "my new turbo is ****ing out oil" threads on here I can't recall any that turned out to be pressure related. IIRC all were drain issues.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll get that fixed and see how it goes. Will I need to put in seals through turbo?

Tappet cover ? the drain should be as vertical as possible low down

No seals needed. But it may take a few miles to get the oil out the turbo once you fix the drain.

Chinese copies often don't have the inbuilt oil supply restrictor that Garrets have. Banjo bolts with the correct size hole to restrict the oil supply can be readily bought.

Edit: My son thought his new turbo was a dud until he discovered the lack of a restrictor in the replacement.

Maybe a Tubro should drain into a Tub( Sorry):D

Tappets run on the cam and the tappet covers for a 4BD1 are on the side of the block below the turbo.

Ideally the turbo drain would be lower, but .....

FWIW I observed my turbo leaking a tiny bit of oil when I first started up (half a tea-spoon or so) but it disappeared quickly (seconds). My assumption is that before thermal expansion the shaft clearances allow a small amount to leak.

I was a little concerned when I first started it up after fitting but after checking everything several times and then running it sans-exhaust I found out that it was fine.

Regardless, the turbo drain should be as close to vertical as possible, of the correct size and without sharp bends or restrictions..

What size is the drain on the turbo and how much do you restrict it?

While I agree the drain should be vertical if possible.....I put my drain into the side cover as well - horizontal. Haven't done more than some test kms yet, but no smoke from oil. Did some test kms without an exhaust as well and no sign of oil on the turbine outlet. My drain is much bigger than everyone else's though. 5/8" barb on turbo, 5/8" hose on a nice round bend to the horizontal and the barb I brazed to the side cover is a 5/8" barb with a minimum 1/2" internal. Some people are running 1/4" drains, so mine is 2 times bigger in diameter. More in cross-section/area.

Sounds like a similar setup to mine. I replaced the breather side cover with a standard one (running turbo rocker cover with the larger breather). It is just a rubber oil hose which I find kinks quite easily when bent. Might need to find something a bit better to use

Judo, the restrictor goes on the feed side, not the drain.
As long as the drain doesn't build pressure (is free flowing) then it's good.

I'll take a pic of mine tonight for comparison.

Sounds like you're going to the rear of the 2 side covers. I'm using the front one BTW. Maybe I got lucky with hose length and location for a nice sweeping bend.

I used some hi-temp oil hose from Enzed. Its got a blue outer cover - quite stiff and doesn't kink easily. I recall being told by one of the hose places not to use silicon hose for tight bends as its soft and kinks easily.
If you've having trouble with kinking it might be better to get a metal elbow added to the drain fitting on the turbo itself rather than trying to accommodate the bend in the hose.

It's the layers of reinforcement that make silicone hose usable or not. But for straight sections it's just pointless bling.
I use fuel hose. It has temperature ratings on it (can't recall right now) and has no problem with oil.
