View Full Version : Period Grille Badges - And Other Works of Art

Folks,

I've been searching for quite a while for some period additions for my little one, namely, grille badges. I was looking in particular, for Royal Automobile Association badges with some grace and beauty.

I have 2 new additions coming, which I am very much looking forward to receiving. The first is a fairly standard piece, although it is still an old period piece, produced from 1954 through to late 60's...mine is numbered and is a genuine 1956 issue.....thinking bottom right of grille.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/02/870.jpg

The second piece I consider to be a work of art. King Edward adorning the face, blue Bakelite in mint condition. This piece is rare, and dates from between 1953-61 but limited in release. It has a delightful Patina, but is nevertheless in excellent condition. Unsure as to why Ted is adorning it, seeing he abdicated in 1936, but it all adds to the mystique. A classic full member's badge, numbered. This one on the bottom left of grille.

Can't wait to fit these to Matilda. So I thought it might be nice to see any period pieces others have for their vehicles.....share please!

Wrong blue blood. The abdicating one was the next generation.

Ah, right - Edward V11. So this badge was a 1953 celebration of the RAC's formation or such?

Some details regarding the RAC.....

The Royal Automobile Club is a British private club and is not to be confused with RAC, an automotive services company, which it formerly owned.

It has two club houses, one in London at 89–91 Pall Mall, and the other in the countryside at Woodcote Park, Surrey, next to the City of London Freemen's School. Like many other "gentlemen's clubs" in London today, the Royal Automobile Club now has women as well as men as members.

In 1905, the Club organised the first Tourist Trophy (TT) motorcycle race, the oldest regularly run motor race. The Club became the governing body for motor sport in Britain. King Edward VII's interest in motoring led to the command in 1907 "that the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland should henceforth be known as The Royal Automobile Club"

Hence why my grille badge has Ted VII adorning it. :)

Maybe one for pop058

Or some of us might prefer the AA (plenty of alcoholics in SLOW, right?)

Just don't make 'em like that any more. ;)

Dan,

Hello again from Harare - yes, they let me in again without the usual hassle.

To topic - nice badges you have shown there. Like a lot of us, I have quite a few picked up here and there over the years - Aust, North and South America, UK and Africa. They were lying around the bench drawer for yonks, but of late I have taken to sticking them up on the cave wall:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/02/856.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Tilly011/media/P1083661_zps2b24aaee.jpg.html)

Likely will put the large round LROCA disc on the grille along with a Land Rover Owners Club badge from the UK - the correct one with the black oval rather than the more common green one (better left to the lesser Discoveries, Range Rovers and, dare I say it, Defenders...).

The last farm truck had a Canadian Auto Assn badge on it from my days as a student and I have a Scottish badge that came down through several vehicles that might get a run. However, being an Australian built truck I can't much see the point in hanging too many African or American doo-dads off it.

Maybe when I get it going the choice will be more relevant.

Cheers,

Neil

Hello again.

This is a great badge and I particularly love the appropriate motto "Gang warily" which basically means "Go safely".

My late Dad was a Stirling man, but his folks and relatives were all Skye men, many of whom had moved to either the Clyde shipyards or lowland constabularies which was fairly typical for the Islanders of the day. When the family decided to emigrate in the 1920s they over-nighted with some relatives in Dunfermline. Dad said that he and his brothers had been prattling on for some time about the adventures to be had in Australia when the older relative simply said that he had "nae inclination for gang foreign". It is a term that we still some time use in loose conversation at home.

Cheers,

Neil, ol' bean. Seems my last post became a victim of some darned system crash. I was saying......love your quote, "Nae inclination for gang foreign".

I'd like to borrow the phrase, if it has your blessing, to be recalled on each and every SLOW trip around the fire at the wee hour.....just seems so apt.

The badge in question is, unfortunately, sold. I shall keep an eye out for another, if you like.

Oh yes - and please, don't forget to pass the port from right to left after dinner. Keep up the good show, I shall see you on your return.

God's speed.

Dan,

Hello again and thanks - feel free to use the quote, it is in the public arena now.

Appreciate the advice on stoep etiquette, but for now am happily content to stick to a few Zambezi lagers and biltong.

Have been making a few arrangements for embellishing the badge collection - picked up a fairly rare Rhodesia (Salisbury) AA badge during my last safari here from an old Series 1 wreck. So, I have the native minder Godfrey and the tribe primed to search out a newer Zimbabwe AA badge. As usual he is brimming with confidence of a successful hunt somewhere in the wrecking yard wilds of south Harare or Chitungwiza.

Off on Saturday to Marondera to seek out a black rhino, which to me are essentially what windmills were to Don Quixote.........

Glad to see that the Kyogle exercise is shaping up to be a great event for the club.

Cheers,

Neil

Ah, the excitement of the hunt! Godfrey is a good man. I look forward to viewing the kill.

The heat must be rife. Beer and more beer. One would have thought, that by the hour aft dining, the port might have been passed......Oh, and right to left, Royal Navy etiquette practised first en route to India I believe.

Might I leave you this morn with these fine badges of St. Christopher.....might he guide the Godfrey led charge with courage........

Perhaps this one once you move to the port....

Dan,

Hello from darkest Africa.

Well, the **** takes its toll. Beer, wine and a decent feed of topside (hell knows what species....). But, the scouts are out in South Harare and Chitungwiza seeking the elusive AA badge as we speak (or attempt to cohere). As said before, the natives are brimming with confidence of a successful hunt - bagged the black rhino on the weekend, so a badge off an old Anglia or Zephyr should be small beer on this safari.

Hopes run high.

Cheers,

Neil

Is that a genuine land rover badge in arabic?? or does it say something else?

I have a 1923 RAA badge, (cant find a photo of mine but...)
http://i597.photobucket.com/albums/tt55/PeterCornell/RAAType3Alum.jpg

This is the badge... It is from the first years of the officially known RAA (before that was the AA of SA).

I have it on the grab handle of the 52...but it will move to anything earlier
that is running....

there are some right crackers in this site that would be worth seeking out! (australian too)

Mainly through the gap between the radiator support panel and the chassis. Good idea to block this gap off if driving offroad, otherwide all the grass seeds end up in the radiator core instead of the chaff guard on the grille.

Dan,

Hello from back in the land of the living.

Well part of my pre-trip prophesy came true.

I did get to ride in one of these:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/02/9.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Tilly011/media/Zimbabwe_Feb_2014_003_zps3a5c6582.jpg.html)

The handsome devil, and proud owner, is young Godfrey - and why wouldn't you smile when you own a Land Rover?

And also saw quite a few of these up close:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/02/10.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Tilly011/media/Pilanesburg_Feb_2014_068_01_zpsd68c81ee.jpg.html)

Plus some of these blocking the road:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/02/11.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Tilly011/media/Pilanesburg_Feb_2014_045_01_zps26550665.jpg.html)

However, the elusive Zim AA badge remains elusive for the time being - next time I am assured....................

Still, the pastime of fishing is usually called 'angling' rather than 'catching fish' for good reason. By the same logic I think 'fossicking' for badges might be a better descriptor than 'picking up' badges....

But its Friday, now where did I leave that bottle opener?

Cheers,

Neil

Dan,

Hello again from Brisbane.

Thanks for drawing my attention to the rather nice RSAC badge in the earlier posts - I hadn't previously been aware of their existence.

I have been looking around the web lately for a good example and have come to the conclusion that they are probably better described as "scarce" rather than "rare" - and the prices vary widely (wildly perhaps).

There were actually 3 of them listed on UK eBay this last week. One was listed by a seemingly mad Jerry for USD$239, which draws to mind the classic punchline from the The Castle. The other two started listed for starting bids at around GBP10. The better of the two finally went for GBP41.50 after 10 bids and the lesser which looked a bit well-worn on the enameling remains unsold until early tomorrow after 3 bids at GBP11.50 - based on the previous price my guess is it is likely for sell for around GBP30. The three bidders also bid on the first badge, although none of them won it.

I had intended to bid on the better of the two with a limit that would have been competitive with the final call - however, two of the bidders had long records of bidding/buying car badges and I figured that it was going to go into the GBP40-50 range. After postage this was going to put it into the $90-$100 range which was a bit steep for something to stick on the cave wall so I kept my hands in my pockets for now. Also Mrs S3ute is waging a fairly determined austerity war at the moment which is largely, but not exclusively, targeted at my small truck.

So, for now one waits patiently for the opportune time. Good generals, and even some of us lesser mortals, know when and where to pick our fights. Also, I am not sure how much longer I can get away with pretending that the bull bar is part of a funny looking ladder and the Roamerdrive is really a spare engine for the Victa........

Cheers,

Neil

Well a bit surprised here - the 2nd badge which was considerably worse for wear than the other one actually sold overnight for GBP 44.70. The silver plating was fairly tarnished and the enamel finish on the saltire was probably beyond cleaning up without re-enamelling it.

Hello from Brisbane.

Still on topic - bought a RAC badge the other day ex-Scotland for the wall collection that is a bit different to the usual diamond shape deal:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/03/688.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Tilly011/media/RAC_zps043b176c.jpg.html)

Early 60's "modern" style. Came in at about the right money unlike the RSAC badges mentioned before.

However, prices out in badge-land still never fail to impress me. I noticed an AA Zimbabwe badge, similar to the one I have been harassing poor old Godfrey and the beaters about, listed on UK eBay this week. At the time of posting this had hit 21 bids and GBP49 (about $90 before postage) with still a day to go....

Since I am expecting to offer little more than about USD$35 in Harare to get something better, it is an incentive to get the tribe actively beating the bushes again. Failed to get a bead on one last time but neither Godfrey nor I were there to supervise the hunt and the crew was probably looking in the wrong places or going slack on the job. No doubt a damn good thrashing might have been the order of the day in pre-independence times. However, my experience here at work, where senior management attempt to try it periodically to boost morale, is that the strategy is more likely to win begrudging compliance than enduring brotherly love. So, it might have to be something more tangibly attractive like a free feed of peri-peri chicken and a Zambezi or two for the successful scout.

Cheers,

Neil

Hello again from Brisbane.

Well, the eBay auction finished on the AA Zim badge overnight and, again, I am bemused at what people will pay for the things - 36 bids and a closing score of GBP95.99 or AU$176.58 plus postage of around $10.....

Amazing.

Needless to say, an even greater financial incentive to fire up the boys for another hunt of the boneyards when I get back to Harare and Bulawayo next month. Bayete.

[QUOTE=Scallops;2086841]Neil,

- I would have thought, dear chap, that any Black Rhino in your environs would be anything but imaginary, let alone anything one might wish to attack! /QUOTE]

Dan,

Hello again.

It's Friday.

It occurred to me that I hadn't effected closure on the black rhino topic from the last foray at Marondera - so here it is:

Attacked merely with a camera and tame to boot. But it is the first of the species that I have actually seen despite years of looking; and the fact that I patted one of them probably makes it a bit like shooting fish in a barrel.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/03/543.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Tilly011/media/Zimbabwe_Feb_2014_078_zpse7af6683.jpg.html)

These are three black rhino - all were orphaned through poaching and are guarded 24/7 by a ranger(s) armed with either an FN semi-auto or AK47. The female in the centre had both parents actually killed on the reserve, but is pregnant which is the long awaited event for the conservation team.

The horns are regularly pruned with a chainsaw to try to remove their commercial value, but in some reserves this means little because the poachers shoot them anyway to avoid spending days at risk (shot on sight - no ifs' or buts') tracking something that is nominally "worthless" - also they hope the authorities will decide the de-horning is ineffective and leave them intact.

This particular rhino is the one that is included in the so-called hunting big five and is obviously not a "black" animal. The name is to differentiate it from the "white" rhino (below) which also is not a "white" animal either.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/03/544.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Tilly011/media/Zimbabwe_Feb_2014_032_zps85574056.jpg.html)

The bigger white or "wide" mouth rhino (the curse of Afrikaans) is the more common one encountered in the bush and is a herbivore with a wide mouth and different teeth arrangement to the black rhino which is a browser and has prehensile lips - top photo. The black rhino is reputably the more aggressive, although this is a matter of degree and makes little difference if one is chasing you........

Hello from Brisbane.

Always had a soft spot for the Rover Owners Association badge with the viking ship.

One sold overnight on eBay for around $90 after postage which was pretty good considering it was not mint condition.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/03/365.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Tilly011/media/Rover_zps200dc620.jpg.html)

It attracted 44 bids most in the last day which seems to be the usual pattern for these things - also the bidder profiles suggested that dedicated badge collectors or on-sellers were mainly in the game.

So, it seems that these more common things (AA, RAC owners club) are regularly going for around GBP40 plus a tenner or more for postage. The rarer stuff like the RSAC and AA Zimbabwe, South Africa or East Africa go for considerably more regardless of condition.

Think I now have pretty much zeroed in on the likely contenders - just a waiting game for a suitable victim.

This one remains high on the list for young Godfrey and the beaters:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/03/366.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Tilly011/media/scope_AA_zps984b25f9.jpg.html)

They're out there............. Won't be paying anything like GBP90 for it however.

Guys managed to get back to Stones Corner today and got a photo of the badges in the shop there. Mixed bag, a couple of interesting ones, though nothing as exotic as a Zimbabwe one. I rather like the NT one actually.

Sorry photo's not a bit clearer but they were just laid out on a glass counter. Shops details are on the business card, should be able to find them in the phone book I'd imagine.

Hello again from Brisbane.

Getting ready to head back to Zimbabwe next week so thought I had better get in a bit of target practice before the serious hunt begins.

Two worthy candidates appeared on eBay over the past week or so including:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/03/59.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Tilly011/media/AA_RSA_zps408c5775.jpg.html)

and more attractively:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/03/60.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Tilly011/media/AA_Rhodesia_50th_zps59daae98.jpg.html)

Threw in an exploratory bid for both without expecting to win - correct as it happens - but did get a sense of where the opposition were placing their limits - $100 for the first and $60 for the second. Consistent with eBay pricing for auto club badges (AA, RAC) although well below some of the crazy asks that you come across. No doubt if I had put in another bid for the 50th badge it would have pushed the final price above $100 - silly money and getting a bit close to the cost of an electronic distributor which might be more useful to the small truck than another wall trinket.

But, as noted before, the thrill of the hunt dictates kicking young Godfrey and the natives out of bed a bit early and combing the Harare boneyards once more with spanners and screwdrivers in hand for fresh spoor. Keen still to get a successful shot at the AA Zimbabwe badge, but also now actively pursuing the 50th anniversary Rhodesia pelt for the cave wall.

Widening the beating ring to include Bulawayo this time, so might yet be luckier in the field than last time.

Cheers,

Neil

Hello again from Brisbane.

Wandered past the shop out of curiosity the other day and eventually after a bit of pontification threw in a cash offer for 4 of the ones in your photo.

Luckily having spent more than many hours in Asia following Mrs S3ute through the bazaars rather than fleshpots I fancy myself as a bit of a successful haggler and recognise the allure of tax free cash. Worked a treat and one of the 4 will likely end up actually fixed the truck, the lesser 3 are destined for the cave wall. Soon to be joined with a prime AA Zimbabwe badge one hopes - as I report, Godfrey is likely out consulting with the shamans and indunas for promising portents, probably examining chicken innards at the bottom of the $2 Chicken Inn value feed.

Back out in eBay land, I threw in a few half-hearted feelers on a some more interesting treasure and probably would have won a couple of them had I really wanted to - but still not that inclined to overspend on wall trinkets. If nothing else it lacks the thrill of the hunt.

Cheers,

Neil

Hello again from the Matobos.

Happy to say that prior to crossing the great water to come here I flushed out a few badges that I had been contemplating acquiring for either the truck or the wall. Happier to say that they were subject to some lucky bargaining.

The main one, thanks to Dan's original post which drew my attention to its existence is:

Several of these went up on UK eBay in recent weeks and most sold for well in excess of $150 after delivery - this one went up locally for considerably less than that sum and will likely end up on the truck. Oddly enough, a couple had no "gang warily" motto which reduced their personal appeal considerably and one from India had "tang warily" which I suspect pointed to dubious providence.

The next was pointed out by Lakey in a local curios shoppe and it too was a pretty good cash buy. Also likely to go on the truck as one of the chosen few:

There were a few other added to the collection in recent times that will go on the wall including this old RAC job:

So, time to have a pause on collecting for a while and refocus on throwing spare cash at my longstanding 1:1 scale project. But having said that, Godfrey and the beaters are readying themselves to go armed with screwdrivers and pliers back into the wilds next week to flush out the elusive Zim AA badge and, hopefully, bag one of the rarer Rhodesia AA 50th anniversary models should one cross their paths.

So, back to the stoep to reflect on some pleasant collecting while the sun goes down.

Cheers,

Neil
