Folks,
I've been searching for quite a while for some period additions for my little one, namely, grille badges. I was looking in particular, for Royal Automobile Association badges with some grace and beauty.
I have 2 new additions coming, which I am very much looking forward to receiving. The first is a fairly standard piece, although it is still an old period piece, produced from 1954 through to late 60's...mine is numbered and is a genuine 1956 issue.....thinking bottom right of grille.
The second piece I consider to be a work of art. King Edward adorning the face, blue Bakelite in mint condition. This piece is rare, and dates from between 1953-61 but limited in release. It has a delightful Patina, but is nevertheless in excellent condition. Unsure as to why Ted is adorning it, seeing he abdicated in 1936, but it all adds to the mystique. A classic full member's badge, numbered. This one on the bottom left of grille.
Can't wait to fit these to Matilda. So I thought it might be nice to see any period pieces others have for their vehicles.....share please!

Some details regarding the RAC.....
The Royal Automobile Club is a British private club and is not to be confused with RAC, an automotive services company, which it formerly owned.
It has two club houses, one in London at 89–91 Pall Mall, and the other in the countryside at Woodcote Park, Surrey, next to the City of London Freemen's School. Like many other "gentlemen's clubs" in London today, the Royal Automobile Club now has women as well as men as members.
In 1905, the Club organised the first Tourist Trophy (TT) motorcycle race, the oldest regularly run motor race. The Club became the governing body for motor sport in Britain. King Edward VII's interest in motoring led to the command in 1907 "that the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland should henceforth be known as The Royal Automobile Club"
Hence why my grille badge has Ted VII adorning it.![]()

Dan,
Hello again from Harare - yes, they let me in again without the usual hassle.
To topic - nice badges you have shown there. Like a lot of us, I have quite a few picked up here and there over the years - Aust, North and South America, UK and Africa. They were lying around the bench drawer for yonks, but of late I have taken to sticking them up on the cave wall:
Likely will put the large round LROCA disc on the grille along with a Land Rover Owners Club badge from the UK - the correct one with the black oval rather than the more common green one (better left to the lesser Discoveries, Range Rovers and, dare I say it, Defenders...).
The last farm truck had a Canadian Auto Assn badge on it from my days as a student and I have a Scottish badge that came down through several vehicles that might get a run. However, being an Australian built truck I can't much see the point in hanging too many African or American doo-dads off it.
Maybe when I get it going the choice will be more relevant.
Cheers,
Neil
Cave Wall = Work of Art. Well done.
Harare, eh? Remember to keep up the supply of Gin and Tonic, ol' bean. Keeps the mossies at bay.
And the darned disease.
See you when you return from Safari.![]()

Hello again.
This is a great badge and I particularly love the appropriate motto "Gang warily" which basically means "Go safely".
My late Dad was a Stirling man, but his folks and relatives were all Skye men, many of whom had moved to either the Clyde shipyards or lowland constabularies which was fairly typical for the Islanders of the day. When the family decided to emigrate in the 1920s they over-nighted with some relatives in Dunfermline. Dad said that he and his brothers had been prattling on for some time about the adventures to be had in Australia when the older relative simply said that he had "nae inclination for gang foreign". It is a term that we still some time use in loose conversation at home.
Cheers,
Neil, ol' bean. Seems my last post became a victim of some darned system crash. I was saying......love your quote, "Nae inclination for gang foreign".
I'd like to borrow the phrase, if it has your blessing, to be recalled on each and every SLOW trip around the fire at the wee hour.....just seems so apt.
The badge in question is, unfortunately, sold. I shall keep an eye out for another, if you like.
Oh yes - and please, don't forget to pass the port from right to left after dinner. Keep up the good show, I shall see you on your return.
God's speed.
Scallops.

Dan,
Hello again and thanks - feel free to use the quote, it is in the public arena now.
Appreciate the advice on stoep etiquette, but for now am happily content to stick to a few Zambezi lagers and biltong.
Have been making a few arrangements for embellishing the badge collection - picked up a fairly rare Rhodesia (Salisbury) AA badge during my last safari here from an old Series 1 wreck. So, I have the native minder Godfrey and the tribe primed to search out a newer Zimbabwe AA badge. As usual he is brimming with confidence of a successful hunt somewhere in the wrecking yard wilds of south Harare or Chitungwiza.
Off on Saturday to Marondera to seek out a black rhino, which to me are essentially what windmills were to Don Quixote.........
Glad to see that the Kyogle exercise is shaping up to be a great event for the club.
Cheers,
Neil
