Hi I have been trying to do the timing belt on my 300tdi 130. Been stuck on removing the viscous fan all day! I have a 32mm fan spanner. I am going clockwise. But the pulley moves with it. Have put it in first. Try using a chisel on the bolt to spin it. It just doesn't want to move off. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Have you removed your fanbelt? If so chuck that back on and then give it a shot. Also it may pay to hold the spanner on the nut and shock it with a blow from a hammer.

I dont know your background and thus If you have tried this no offense intend. That normally work for me.

Hi thanks for the advice but yes fan belt on and tried to shock with a hammer. Also used wd40

I'm not sure if the Tdi is the same or similar to the Td5 but this is what I use - the two holes in the lower 'tool' fit over the bolt heads holding the pulley on to stop it from turning. you can do it with two holes in a single piece of flat bar but this makes it fit any spacing of bolt heads.

I recently changed my viscous fan hub and I must have been lucky as the nut undid very easily...too easy in fact!

Hope you get it undone shortly

blatant theft from another forum member, but i made this based on that person's drawing. I made mine 400mm long to clear the fan

granted it works on the TD5 and Puma. Can't speak for the 300tdi

Hi, you can try stuffing a rag into the V between the belt and the pulley making it harder for it to rotate. Avoid jagging one bolt head to the hub centre with a large screwdriver or such to stop it turning and then putting pressure/hit with hammer on the viscous spanner. :o The flange that these bolts go into is cast and it can break very easily thus turning your 'simple' job into a complex one.

Plan 'b' , go down to your local radiator service who should have a 'special tool' to hold the bolts whilst undoing the hub nut.

Thanks everyone will have to try another day but may go for the special tool option. Tried all means of jamming the pulley and it always moves :(

Just make sure you are turning the thing in the correct direction. I know some are LH thread but not sure which ones.

The 300 Tdi has a Left Hand thread!
It is surprising with the amount of force it sounds like you have used that it hasn't come undone.

Im glad at least one reader used my drawing to create a useful tool
As you say its for a PUMA. The pins engage holes in the pulley. It wont work on a Td1 300
A Tdi 300 requires a tool to capture the bolt heads fastening the pully

I cut mine off with an angle grinder.
Also dismantled my water pump that way as well.
That was a 200tdi so i had a little more space to play with between the fan and radiator.

Just make sure you are turning the thing in the correct direction. I know some are LH thread but not sure which ones.

This is how I remember ...............

If the belt goes over the top of the viscous pulley, (eg. Tdi 300) then its a LH thread, if it goes under the pulley, (eg. Td5) then it's a RH thread. :)

When I removed the Td5 viscous hub I had a 6' bar on the hub spanner and my friendly radiator man had another 6' bar on the 'special tool' hub bolt head holder. It took all our effort to 'uncrack' the nut. :eek:
