If it was a import from the UK rather than built here kit car, it might be on the front right of the chassis.

If its built here is on the left hand rear spring hanger, you may have to scrub/scape away layers of crud/paint to get to it.

If it really isn't there, you could put it there:wasntme:

You may have to take it back to bare metal, and even etch it to show the number.

The number should be on the vertical bit of the spring hanger just above the shackle bolt at the top of the shackle on the back of the back left hand spring, facing out.

I would have thought the plate bolted to the car would be enough?

Check the front axle, at least mine has a chassis number stamped on it (although it's an early 2a so may be different?) But! beware, lots of these get swapped out so if it has a different number stamped on it probably don't mention it when you go over the pit ;)

That is the axle number not the chassis number. Landrovers have always had major bits stamped with serial numbers, and initially they were the same as the chassis number for some parts.

When I took Ralph in to rego it, they didn't even want to see the car, They asked me for a VIN number but all I said I have is a chassis number. They said it was a 1964 6cyl petrol, I said 1966 4cyl Diesel, They changed the description on their computer and all was good. Out of there in 20 minutes. Must be some sort of record for Queensland Transport.

I can only hope that they will do that for me. I can't find a chassis number at all.

You must have got a nice person, they argued with me for 20minutes about the colour! I called it gold, they said it was mustard. So i said, yea it's mustard. That wasn't good enough, because on the road worthy they said it was a different colour again. Sooooo they needed to see the car. then the proceeded to argue about the configuration of the car, they said it has to be called a panel van.... 4 trips, a whole afternoon later i was ready to just burn the car in their carpark....

But yea I had to 'found' the serial number on the spring hanger. ;)

Yeah, she really didnt have a clue the poor girl. She said the numbers I gave her indicated it was a 64 LandRover 6cyl petrol truck, when I told her it was a 66 SWB Diesel ute, she had to go and get help, the new girl asked me what I thought it was and she changed all the info on the computer to reflect my description. Good Luck
