Have tried to get oil filter top off,but it seems to be really tight.

Is it left hand thread to undo or right hand thread before I break it..

Doesnt look as if its had a service for a while.

Air/fuel/pollen filter and charcoal breather pretty mucky...;)

cheers

If it's like every BMW 6 petrol engine, it has a bolt in the middle which is just a normal righty tighty.

big plastic cap, 36mm socket, right hand thread and should not be really tight, book spec is 25nm - it has a rubber O-ring.

I sheared the plastic nut of the top of mne the first time I tried to change the filter.

Ordered a new one and waited, and ended up using a piece of rubber mesh over the whole thing and then an oil filter wrench over that and lots of swearing and cracked plastic but off it came.

I have only ever done it up hand tight since, again with a rubber mesh for a bit of extra grip.

Just that rubber mesh stuff you use to stop things slipping around on the dash or for place mats etc.

JSP,

Where did you find the new top? Mine split like two pins at the end of a lane.. :/

They are available second hand on ebay, but they are all OS. I would call the BMW dealers and ask them, I'm sure it would be a commonly kept part.

I know this is digging up an oldie, but I bought a new one from ritter land rover, was delivered to me for a very very reasonable price...as I always do, check the dealers first for parts, not always expensive
