I am trying to find an Australian supplier of checker plate wing tops for my series 2a. Anyone been able to source them here?
Thanks,
Howard

MR Automotive gets them made local. Had some there the other week when I was down there.

Got two and fitted them. Now to do the paint job!
Thanks for the lead.

Got some aluminium chequerplate, cut them out with a saw, trimmed the edges and made the curved corners with a power planer, drilled and installed them. One morning's work several years ago. (You can work alloy with woodworking power tools!)

I'm sure you can.... but how long does your nice sharp blades/tools stay sharp for?

If they are carbide tipped they will be unaffected. Steel cutting implements are unlikely to be affected either.
The only catch, and it is a real one, is that the cutting angle on the woodworking tools is not ideal for alloy. For this reason you should use a shallower cut on a planer than you would on wood, and take it slower with a power saw.
I learnt this from a boatbuilder after watching him smooth off the welds on the outside of an alloy yacht hull with a planer.

I think I will try this next time I'm working with ally. Thanks for the tip.
