View Full Version : Low speed turning clunks?

Hi guys,
I've got 96 Tdi 130, and have got a clunk. Not just a clunk, a specific clunking, only at noticeable at low speeds, while turning as tight as a 130 turns. Sounds like it's coming from the rear end, but it's hard to pinpoint anything in particular. It happened before the new gearbox and transfer box was installed, and still happens now. I've googled and searched but haven't found a lot on it that doesn't seem to relate back to gearbox clunks.
Any ideas, or thoughts on where I should start this next phase of fixing?
Cheers

Any chance you have a Detroit locker in the rear diff? Mine is a bit like that on occasions.
The other thing might be a worn CVs - happening in the front but transmitting through the driveline and sounding like its in the rear.

OK, check your CV joints and the drive hubs. Jack wheel up and rotate it back and forth. Do that for both sides. Check for noises and excessive movement, listen for noises in the diff as you do it. The front tailshaft unis also can be a source.

Unlikely if the noise was before and after new g/box & T/C, but is it stuck in centre diff lock?

Another unlikely one is the A-frame pivot bolts loose.

Front tyres catching on the radius arms? Direction of sound can be deceiving, I swear every noise is on the driver's side of my County because that's the side the window is always open on..

Id second that it may be a tight rear diff ie a Detroit locker engaging disengaging engaging

Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it

95% sure I just have the big old Sals in the back, but will double check for peace of mind now that you mention it.
Pretty sure the diff isn't locked , it has an additional light to indicate its locked, and it's not on, but another one I can check.
Only running 235 ATs, and can't see any scuff marks so don't think it's the tyres.
I'll try jacking it up and rotating the wheels to see if there is any play.
I might even try getting a lackey to stand on the inside of a corner as I drive slowly round them and see what they pick up.
Cheers

Wonder if your rear diff has dropped a cross pin, locking the diff and causing it to load and unload when turning.....

You have checked for something obvious such as a loose wheel?
